INTER
TOWN RESULT : TELFORD A travelled to Meole Brace to take on
SHREWSBURY A in what promised to be a very tight affair. In
the opening encounter Jaon Bright took on visiting Darren
Weston. An early break of 21 helped Darren open up a lead and
some assured potting helped him secure the first point for
Telford, winning 51-6. The second frame was a much tighter
game with the early stages seeing the lead change hands as
both players struggled to settle. Shrewsbury's Tom Hancher
edged in front of Telford's John Fallows after a miss but in
the end it was an outrageous fluke on the final blue that
finally clinched the frame for Tom 73-47 to level the match.
Next up for the home side was Callum Wraight taking on the
experienced Matt Davies. Another close game looked on the
cards with no more than a couple of points in it when a
cluster of reds surrounded the black over the left hand
pocket. A scrappy few minutes ensued before Matt took the
initiative to open up a 21 point advantage with 2 reds left.
That proved to be the turning point as he clinched the frame
63-22 to put Telford back in front. Some excellent potting and
solid safety helped visiting skipper Paul Lloyd to a 30 point
advantage in the fourth frame against Shrewsbury's Matt Ryder.
Needing a snooker young Matt potted the green to get the
snooker on the brown but it was never going to be enough, Paul
eventually putting his side a single frame from victory,
running out a 66-32 winner. Shrewsbury needed a boost to get
back into the match so up next was Staffordshire County
Captain Simon Seabridge taking on the returning Zenon Lembicz
for Telford. Simon got in first and never looked back with
some great potting to reduce the match deficit to 2-3, winning
his frame 89-27 ...game on. In the penultimate frame the home
side's John Barton was up against Telford's Shaun Harris and
it was John that began the better. Once in front he kept
things very tight leaving Shaun absolutely nothing to go at,
eventually clinching the frame 59-5 to set up, as anticipated,
a final frame decider between Ade Rowe for Shrewsbury and Ian
Duffy for Telford. Ian, drawing on his experience of playing
for England's pool team, calmly opened up a good 20 point
lead, before a cruel in off allowed Ade to get his hand on the
table. He edged his way to 18 before missing a yellow when
sending the cue ball around the table to attempt to split the
pack. The lead continued to switch to and fro as the nerves
and adrenalin began to kick in. Ade jawed a red, Ian steps up
red, black, red, yellow takes him 22 clear. Ian jaws the last
red and so it continues. Ade takes the last red, blue, yellow,
green but lands straight on the brown so just rolls it in
leaving the cue ball just 6 inches from the yellow pocket and
blue on its spot. He tries to roll it in, misses but it goes
safe, tight on the side cush a fraction from being left over
the pocket. No obvious easy safety for Ian from there. A
fantastic cross double puts Ian 12 ahead with pink and black
to go and he leaves a snooker on the pink ...advantage
Telford. Ade misses and Ian holds his nerve to pot the pink to
seal the match 64-40. What a match! Well played lads and all 3
Telford teams are safely through to the 2nd round.
