TEAM
KO SEMI FINALS:
First Division Dawley A took on
lowly 2nd Division side Bayley Cue trying to overturn a 225
point handicap. Ade Henry began well as a 24 break helped him
to a 77-32 win against Roger Smith to cut the deficit to 180.
The two skippers stepped up next for what turned out to be an
absolute marathon of a frame ..(sorry Chris Petford aka the
ref) ..It was Bayley's Noel Hitch that got in front but Mick
Reynolds dug in and slowly closed the gap with a 20 break and
after 1 hour and 40 minutes he finally clinched the frame
69-56. Bayley still in front by 167 saw Danny Weaver take on
an in form Adam Moore. Adam got in early with a 24 and ran out
a 93-30 victor to cut the difference to 104 with just 2 frames
to go. Sean Nolan was next for Dawley against Chris Durham for
Bayley. Both players had chances and in the end it was sean
that came out on top 66-34 to leave Bayley 72 points ahead
going into the final frame. After sitting down for 4 hours you
couldn't blame the final pairing if they were a little jaded.
However Dawley's Keith Price potted a red, opened the
pack and continued to make a fantastic 70 break to reduce the
deficit to just 2. Shell shocked Spencer played safe off the
only red he could see only to see Keith smash another red in
on his way to making another 30 before cruelly going in off
the final blue. It was more than enough though and he had
completed a remarkable comeback winning 111-5 and Dawley
taking the match 453-419.
In the other semi final it was
two 2nd Division sides doing battle as Shifnal D took on
Maddocks 2nd Club. In the first frame 2nd Club's Dave Ferriday
beat Karl Wilson 59-31 to extend their advantage to 53.
Shifnal's James Beckett hit back in the next by beating Dave's
dad Ian Ferriday 60-34 to reduce the deficit to 27. Dean
Harris continued the momentum for Shifnal as he beat Mike
Thompson 59-26 to put his side in front for the first time,
albeit by just 6. The match could go either way and the 4th
frame did little to change that as Brian McMillan just edged
past Terry Askew 54-42 to give Shifnal a slender 18 point
advantage at the start of the final frame. In a tense final
frame it was Shifnal's Mark Hebdon that held his nerve to
defeat Nick Holmes 42-14 to clinch their place in the final
446-400.
CONSOLATION
CUP SEMI FINALS:
In only their 2nd year Bayley
Lads admitted they felt like they had over achieved by
reaching the semi final where they took on an experienced Dawley
B side who were conceding a 75 point handicap. Dawley's Luke
Fletcher set about reducing that deficit as he won the first
frame 82-37 against Ross Bowater, Bayley now just 30 ahead.
The second frame swund to and fro before the Lads' Lucas
Benbow squeezed past Liam Goodman 52-50 to extend their lead
to 32. Gavin Smallwood had a nice 22 break which helped him
beat Pete Nolan 67-27 to give Bayley a decent 72 advantage
going into the last 2 frames. Skipper Josh Devey did well to
hold Dawley's John Davies, who has being playing well this
year, but it was John who ran out a 64-33 victor in the end,
cutting Bayley's lead to 41 at the start of frame 5. Andy
Garbett began well and opened up a 37 point lead to reduce the
deficit to just 4. However it was the Lads' Mike Cooper who
held strong potting the colours well and doing enough to
clinch the final berth for his side. Andy won the frame 49-28
but its Bayley Lads who take their place in the final winning
the match 467-445.
In the other semi final it was
a battle of 2 of the strongest teams in the league as Shifnal
B took on Maddocks A, with Maddocks starting with a 25 point
advantage. John Fallows started well and a 32 break helped him
to defeat Shaun Harris 80-34 to put Shifnal ahead by 21 after
the first frame. Leigh France hit back for Maddocks as he
defeated Tom Mulholland 69-32 to put Maddocks back in front by
16. Next up was the battle of the Davies's with Shifnal's Matt
beat Maddocks' Phil 73-30 and restore Shifnal's lead to 27.
The match continued to swing from one side to the other as
Maddocks' Ian Skelton rolled back the years to beat Lynsay
Knox 107-26 and give the Oakengates boys a lead of 54 going
into the last. Aaran Sparkes had a real go but in the end Ian
Eldridge did just enough as Aaran won the frame 108-57 but
Maddocks claim their place in the final, winning by a slender
3 points, 322-319.
