Match Report - 2016/17

TEAM KO 2ND ROUND: Flying high in the 2nd division, Maddocks C hosted 1st division Bayley B with a slender 25 point advantage to defend. First up was Mike Wainwright who potted well to defeat Danny Oliver 80-12 and increase that advantage to 93. Darren Hoof played his part in a high scoring affair and managed to hold off Kev West, winning 79-61 to extend the lead to 111. Divisional singles winner James Hayward edged out Garry Owen 54-40 in the next, the lead now 125. Two experienced campaigners faced off in the penultimate frame and, keeping with the pattern of the match, it was the home side's Richie Heighway winning 79-43 to pretty much seal victory. In the final frame Joe Oliver ran out a 75-20 victor over Chris Smith. Maddocks winning by 216. At Dawley it was Anstice B against Bayley Cue with the visitors looking to avenge last week's 1-4 reverse at home. Bayley held a 37 point lead at the start but this was quickly erased by home skipper Stew Wimbush with a lovely 32 break against Roger Smith. Roger dug deep to get back into the frame at in the end it was Stew that took the frame 62-38, Bayley still ahead by just 13. Noel Stones began well in the next but Chris Durham came back strongly, just missing out in a black ball game, Noel edging it 55-41 to put Anstice ahead by 1. Another black ball game followed with some good potting by both players but Nigel Wallcroft took it 52-45 over Spencer Clarke to extend the home side's advantage to 8. In the fourth frame the visitors Danny Weaver didn't miss much, although at his own admission had more than a little run, and he overcame Steve Smallwood 82-17 to put Bayley 57 ahead going into the final frame. Frank Williams and Noel Hitch cancelled each other out in the last and Frank conceded on the colours with the difference 63. Another game at Maddocks saw 2nd Club take on Allscott with a 50 point deficit to try to overcome. Terry Askew set about doing just that as he beat Kev Waland 72-23 to leave the visitors just a single point to the good. The battle of the Nick's followed and it was Allscott's Gwynne that 'nicked' it on the black against 2nd Club's Holmes, winning 50-41 to extend the gap to 10. It was Dave Ferriday next taking on Carl Starling and he took the frame 70-43 to put the home side in front for the first time by 17. With the match still in the balance it was the experience of Ian Ferriday that saw him across the line 67-44 over visiting skipper Dave Finney to give his team a 40 point lead. Lloyd Giles was able to see it out and put 2nd Club into the hat as he out scored Dan Brenthall 53-28 and seal a 65 point win. The final match of the round was arguably set up as the tie of the round as top of the 1st division faced 5th and as if that wasn't enough to whet the appetite, it was a derby match too as Dawley C hosted Dawley A, who held a 50 point lead at the start. The A sides Sean Nolan began well with a 17 break which was matched by Michael Mancini. There was little between them until Michael missed a blue when looking set and Sean stepped up to clear the table with a nice 46 break, winning 82-31 and put the A side 101 in front. The experienced Zenon Lembicz was hoping to roll back the years if he was going to get his team back in the match. Everything he tried was matched by Ade Henry and when he rattled a black, Ade rolled in a lovely 41 to take the frame 87-24, increasing the advantage to 164. Steve Clayton tried in vain as Adam Moore, aided by a decent 38 break, took the next 57-43 further extending the gap to 178. In the fourth frame Darren Weston dug in and a 39 break helped him to defeat Mick Reynolds 90-16 to give his team a slim chance, 104 behind going into the last. Ex pro Paul Lloyd would have to be at his very best and had to refuse reds with no colours available. He slowly made inroads into the deficit but as he tried to force it a little Keith Price stepped up and calmly knocked in a 48 break to put him 54-43 ahead in the frame, 115 in the match with just the colours left so Paul conceded. CONSOLATION CUP 1ST ROUND Just 2 matches in the first round and first up was bottom of the league Bayley Z facing 1st division Eden G with a 213 point lead to defend. Dan Francis was up against Craig Reynolds and he did well to hold Craig to an 80-29 score line. With the deficit now 162 visiting Roy Leneveu started strongly with a good 51 break and it looked like the match was back in the balance. However Paul Rhodes played fantastically to come back into the frame, eventually losing out 72-45 to Roy but importantly, keeping the lead at 135. Inspired by Paul's efforts the momentum certainly changed as Steve Dawes edged out Graham Copson on the black 45-40, then Tony Morgan did the same against Rich Jones 47-42 to give Iain Atkinson a 145 lead going into the final frame. It proved to be more than enough as Steve Powell could only beat Iain 43-32 meaning the Z boys go through by 134 and look dangerous for whoever they face next. The final match saw another derby, this time at Maddocks as the E team played host to the A side. Simon Yeats began defending a 75 advantage but it was Leigh France that took the frame 77-38 to cut the lead to 36. Next up for the A side was Ian Duffy who played well to defeat Mark Wall and put his team ahead by just 5. The match swung back in the home side's favour as Andy Jones beat Shaun Harris 68-42, the E side back ahead by 21. The see-saw nature of the game continued as Phil Davies out scored Steve Downes 75-31 to leave the match finely balanced with the A side just 23 to the good. In the final frame it was the experienced Dave France that held his nerve to take the frame 70-46 and seal the match by 47
