TREBLES
SEMI FINALS The first semi final saw Dawley's Mick
Reynolds;Adam Moore & Mark Jones take on Eden's Michael
Mancini;Tom Maxfield & Dan Morris at Maddocks. Frame 1 -
Mick Reynolds ( Dawley) against Michael Mancini (Eden) Mick
took an early 15 point lead in this match before Michael
slowly came back into the match though still trailing. Some
good safety play from both players saw the black covering the
bottom right hand pocket surrounded by about eight reds. After
a few ‘foul and a miss’ shots, Mick then potted the black
whilst trying to escape from yet another well laid snooker.
This allowed Michael to take control of the frame and end up
winning the frame by the score of 50 - 64. Frame 2 – Mark
Jones (Dawley) against Tom Maxfield (Eden) Mark started the
frame in confident fashion by potting extremely well and
including a slow full length of table brown. Tom was given
little opportunity from Mark who was gradually increasing his
lead by continuing to pot everything before him. A few
uncharacteristic missed chances for Tom late in the frame gave
Mark the impetus to go on and comfortably win the frame by the
score of 65 – 33. Frame 3 – Adam Moore (Dawley) against
Dan Morris (Eden) Starting with an 18 point lead, Adam very
quickly added to this lead by putting together a well
controlled 32 break. Dan was struggling to get into the frame
and gave Adam the chance to stretch the lead even further.
When Dan did manage to pot his first red he also succeeded in
going in-off , it was not to be Dan’s night as Adam slotted
in another break of 25. Adam finally winning the frame 81 –
39, giving Dawley the match by the score of 196 – 136
Congratulations to the Dawley lads who will now take their
place in the Trebles Final. Unlucky to the Eden boys, with
thanks to Maddocks Club and the people who came out to support
the players. (Report by Willie Brown) The second semi final
was hosted by Dawley and saw John Fallows; Aaron Sparkes &
Tom Mulholland of Shifnal take on the Maddocks team of Shaun
Harris; Leigh France & Phil Davies. It was Shaun who
started the stronger against John who really couldn't get
going as Shaun opened up a 40 point lead helped by a 20 break.
It appeared that whatever John tried it was not going to be
his night and to be fair Shaun had more than his fair share of
run at times. In the end it summed up the frame as John went
in off the final black leaving Shaun to take the frame 79-8.
Aaron tried to get his side back into the match but Leigh
matched him all the way as the lead was never more than a few
points either way until the mid point. As Aaron tried to force
the initiative he gave Leigh a chance to edge ahead and he
didn't look back as he claimed the frame 84-35 giving Maddocks
what looked like an unassailable 120 point advantage with one
frame remaining. As Tom stepped up to break off he joked 'it
would be a good time to make a century I guess'. Never a truer
word spoken as Phil was left sat in his chair after just one
shot wondering if he would get back to the table. From the
moment young Tom sank that first red into the centre of the
corner pocket there was a sense that something special might
be happening. He calmly strode around the table under immense
pressure keeping perfect position until the penultimate red.
With the adrenalin flowing he slightly overran the cue ball,
but undeterred and using the rest, he sank the pink into the
same corner pocket he began his break to complete his century,
102 in fact. Unfortunately running round off 2 cushions he ran
about an inch too far to be able to cut the last red and with
all the colours on their spots it would surely have been a
total clearance of 137. However he played safe and Phil was
able to get back to the table for only his second shot,
trailing by 102 in the frame but still 18 points ahead in the
match. A short safety exchange followed before Phil kept his
composure to clear to the pink to clinch the match. A cracking
effort and a great semi final.
