John
banks played well and won a tight 1st frame against Paul Devey on the blue. Tom
Maxfield was at his normal fluent self and knocked in a great 41 break on the
way to comfortably beating Kev West. Simon played solid and picked off points
consistently in beating bayley captain dickie oliver. Mick was to good for
Danny and won comfortably in the end after building up a good early lead. Mac
got the bayley lads a deserved point in the last with a really good performance
against Dave Berry. Fair result and one that both teams will be quite happy
with.
Shifnal B got there season off to a flying start with a hard
fought victory over newly promoted Anstice C. Matt Davies was not his usual
self due to toothache, but having missed early chances he finished the frame
off with a lovely 58 clearance to get the better of Jamie Mills. Aaron Sparkes
was next up against the 1st of the useful brothers Lee Cross. An open and
tactical frame went to the wire, but when Lee crucialy missed the last black,
Aaron took it full length of the table to make it 2-0. Next up cptn Angus Way
took on Lee\'s brother Sean. A good if low scoring frame ensued with good
tactical play on both sides but when Sean got in with a 29 break he looked the
likely winner. However he missed the last red, and Angus jumped at the chance to
take the remaining balls to take the frame on the pink.Frame 4 saw Linsay Knox
taking on Chris Griffiths. Another enjoyable frame, and a good safety shot from
Linsay had Chris in trouble, and after conceding 20+ points in fouls it enabled
Linsay to run away with the frame. Last up saw John Fallows take on Chris
Gifford, and with both players having chances early on, it was John who settled
quickest to build a steady lead, and then rounded off the evening with a fine
51 clearance. A great start for Shifnal, but Anstice should take heart from the
spirited way they played.
Bayley Cue welcomed Maddocks E to Wellington for the long awaited
start to the new season. Firstly though we would all like to wish Steve
Weatherall a speedy recovery from his recent operation and hope to see him back
potting soon. After last season\'s promotion and cup win, Bayley soon realised
how tough this season will be as Mark Wall opened up an early lead. Rob Cook
battled back to close the gap to just 14 before Mark took 20 points off the
last red with some shrewd safety to run out 66 - 31 taking the first frame. The
next frame was a real see-saw battle with both players holding the lead so it
was probably no surprise to see the scores level with just pink and black to
go. With the black tight on the side cushion it was going to go to the wire and
so it proved as Chris Durham took the pink but missed a double on the awkward
black only to see Ollie Wall take his chance well to extend his sides
advantage, winning 54 - 53. With usual skipper Steve recouperating at home Mike
Healey stepped in at short notice but he met Tony Garmson in formidable form.
With some steady potting and good safety Tony cleared the last 4 colours to
clinch a 97 - 21 win and the match for Maddocks. New skipper Noel Hitch clashed
with former pool team mate and visiting skipper Steve Downs in the 4th frame.
It proved to be the quickest frame of the night with Steve in front early, then
Noel going in front by 5, but Steve proved the better potter to close the frame
out 64 - 26. With time running out and not much chance of an extension, the 5th
frame was switched to another table and played alongside the 4th. The change of
table also provided a change of fortune as Bayley\'s Lee Newton produced a
solid display to defeat Nick Pearce 53 - 8 to record the Cue teams first point
of the new campaign. Overall it was a good match played in a great spirit and
we would like to wish Maddocks all the best for the rest of the season (except
the return fixture obviously
