The
new season kicked off last Wednesday, and, good news, we have
thirty-six teams to compete.
I
will be sending reports to Shropshire Star, and the Wellington
Journal, and if anyone would like to add a few comments from
their matches, I will post what I can, thanks in anticipation.
Division
One.
Hadley
A, formerly Bayley F took residence in their new club this
week when they played their counterparts, Hadley B. A great
match this, and all over by nine thirty playing on one table.
Kev Whitehead had a good potting frame with a below par Paul
Trevor for Hadley B to take the lead. John Williams had a
great frame with a 58 break to level the score, followed by a
stirling match by Graham Darrell who had breaks of 32 and 35,
2-1 to Hadley A. Alan Turner got himself 20 ahead of Darren
Pountney, but Darren came back well, and although fluking the
blue took a good pink to win his match. Mick Hughes was no
match for Laki Badhan who opened the frame with a 55 break.
All in all a great first match for our opener, and for the
newly promoted Hadley B.

Bayley
Q vs. Bayley Z. The season started with a Bayley derby,
although some new spectators had taken the names literally,
and thought they had come to watch a scrabble match. Frame 1 saw Rob Cook for the home
side take on Richard "tugboat" Benting with both
players evenly matched throughout the frame. With neither
having much rub of the green, it went to the final black, with
Rich entered in the new look handbook as the 1st winner 57-46. Frame 2 was
Chris Durham vs. Roy Francis; Roy started the stronger with
some smooth potting. Chris found his proverbial feet with some
good safety and gained momentum to win 49-29. With the scores
all level Lee Newton gave Tony Morgan little chance, with some
solid potting including a 24 break, winning 79-18. It is now
up to Tony's teammates to see if he can lose last seasons
"Norway" tag (watch out for their future match
reports). Frame 4 saw Steve Weatherall take on Danny Francis
in a closely fought match, a little bit more good luck and a
well taken double on the blue clinched it for Steve 53-33. A
gritty final frame between Rich Tranter and Al Francis took
place, with Rich pushed to the limit by an old injury as well
as a gutsy performance from a determined opponent, with Rich
holding on to win 68-40. This left a 4-1 score line in favour
of the Bayley Q, and the sociable Bayley Z awaiting the return
of Iain
"San
Miguel" Atkinson.

Fine
start for a new team, Sir John Bayley Juniors, with Jim Langley winning the opening
frame for the home side. Three new players having their
initiation to the snooker world enjoyed the experience and
look forward to their forthcoming adventures. Thanks to the
Dawley C lads for not giving us a whitewash.
