CODDON
PRODUCE SHOCK OF THE SEASON - Division 1 leaders Shifnal B
took on Coddon A this week who were languishing down in the
relegation playoff place prior to the game so the result was
somewhat of a formality, and that’s exactly how it started
with the unbeaten Matt Davies taking the first frame for
Shifnal against Tony Garmson. However, that’s where
normality ended and what followed was a display of true grit
by the Coddon boys who were obviously intent on ending the
season, and indeed their long association with the club which
closes next week, on a massive high. First into the breach was
Andy Jones who overcame Aaron Sparkes followed closely by
Steve Downs who beat the in form Angus Way. Not content with
the 2-1 lead, Dave Lloyd stepped up for Coddon and made light
work of the next winning 71-23 against John Fallows to give
the team an unassailable 3-1 lead. With the home side reeling
from 3 major blows it fell to Nick Pearce to deliver the
knockout punch with a 48 point victory over Lindsay Knox. The
Coddon spirit will be sorely missed by the league when they
close the doors for the final time next week, and this result
will leave us all a memory of one of the finest victories
seen.

Tom
Mulholland played a solid frame in beating Lee Harris 54-13, a
good run of 20 from the last three reds helping to win the
frame. Mike Reynolds played some great safety, and took his
chances against Craig Baugh, who has been in fantastic form
over the last few weeks for the Bayley. Mike running out a
71-11 winner. Ben Sewell was at his normal flowing best in
beating Craig Reynolds 73-13. It was always going to be about
who got in first with both players capable of knocking in big
breaks. Thankfully for the Bayley lads it was Ben with a run
of 35, which should have been 50plus, that got in and kept it
tight throughout. Kev West and Steve Powell's game was a bit
scrappy by both players admission, but Steve always had his
nose just in front and took the frame 67-48 on the Pink. Last
up in the decider were Richie Jones and Danny Oliver who have
both had good seasons. The frame started well with both
players taking reds with high value colours. Danny got a fair
bit of run and along with two unfortunate in-offs by Rich,
built up a 20 point lead. Rich however fought back and with
Danny missing chances to put the frame away it came down to
the last 3 balls. It looked all over after Rich rattled the
blue and left it up, but after potting the blue a poor safety
by Danny left Rich a chance to get the 1 snooker he needed on
the pink and he duly obliged leaving the white tucked up
behind the black. Danny missed, and after Rich potted the pink
he had a long attempt up the rail which he rattled in the
jaws, and although it ran safe the white came across the table
and fell in the top left bag handing Danny the frame. Great
game between 2nd and 3rd in the league and a grandstand finish
as well

Division Three
Bayley Q
vs Newport B. With 1st playing 3rd in the division, both teams
had a lot at stake, riding on the result. Colin Farge got off
to an assured start with some precise potting. Rob Cook
replied with some clever safety at the snooker's required
stage, but it was not to be as Colin won 71-34 for the
visitors. Frame 2 saw Steve Speake with the stronger all round
game on the night to beat Chris Durham 61-28 putting Newport
2-0 up. Frame 3 saw an unbelievably tight affair with Lee
Newton & Allan Davies sharing the first 7 reds without
colours. Lee, who seems not to be suffering from the lack of
sleep after the birth of his son, was the first to break the
deadlock, and once clear went on to win 47-31 in a very
closely fought encounter. Frame 4 saw Captain Chris Fletcher
take on Wayne Weeks. The Bayley lads had hoped that Chris had
not bumped into an exorcist in the last 7 days, and he
didn’t'd disappoint as he once again played like the
"proverbial" man possessed, throwing Wayne out of
his playing stride, with Chris winning 54-42. A good fight
back from Bayley Q had forced a decider between a regular
pairing of Richard Tranter vs. Les Stirling. The frame ebbed
and flowed each way with the only difference being a super pot
on the final pink, leaving a score of 35-27 to Les, and a
close win on the night to Newport B. It may not be the score
Newport would have wanted, but it leaves things tightly poised
for both the title & the 3rd place playoff's at the
business end of the season, with one league game remaining.

What
a great team to play for. In our last game the beer was
flowing all night and the games were all enjoyable, none more
so than the last. The secret to lain Atkinson’s form was
finally found in the Anstice stewards beef stew, having
devoured several plates of stew and roast potatoes, bread and
butter, lain put on several pounds which stabilized his
balance, and he never looked like missing. The night ended
with a few shared golf tips from the Hadley handicap bandits,
classic night cheers Hadley.
