TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - Team KO 1st Round

Telford and District Amateur Snooker League (sponsored by Chris Hardy, s Tyres).

A huge night at the Maddocks club, with 3 sides at home, the A side faced Lds A both sides level on the handicap, first up I Eldridge v L Elcock, both players in fine form this season, this was nip and tuck early on, with Lee opening up a lead, Ian responded superbly with a lovely 57 break to put himself right back into the frame and eventually took it 62-51, I Skelton v G Wiley, a frame of total potting, both players finding some good quality pots throughout, unfortunately for the home player he went in off the last black to lose 59-55, but gained a welcome pint in the process, L France v J Lowe, another nervy affair with Jesse showing his opponent lots of respect and making small breaks and running away from the pack, Leigh found it hard to get back into the frame after the away player built up a substantial lead, Jesse eventually winning 82-44, P Davies v S Russell, this time it was the home player who took the early initiative, building up a nice lead, with some great long pots, leaving Stu little opportunity in the balls, Phil winning 83-15 putting his side 37 up going into the last, the old stalwart D France faced A Henry, he kept the frame very tight and didn’t allow Ade many chances, Dave taking it 46-37. Maddocks B faced the division one leaders Shifnal B with 190 start on the handicap, first up

G Arnold v A Sparkes, the home player potted well early on, restricting his opponents chances, Az got back into the frame with some good shots of his own, but he couldn’t quite draw level, Graham eventually sinking the black to win by 7, M Davies v N Warrender, this was going to be tough for the home player, with Matt knocking in the seasons highest break of 132 in the doubles this week, he started fast again, no high breaks, but plenty of good pots and safety ensured he pulled 89 back for the Shifnal lads,  A Way v R Lowe, another player in fine form, Angus potted well throughout, but Roy never gave up and reduced the winning margin for Angus, who pulled back another 48, leaving his side 62 behind with two to play, L Knox v

K Davies, this frame turned out to be the turning point in the match, Ken played some superb shots early on, giving himself an early lead, Lynsay tried in vain to get back into it, but Kens safety proved just too good, and also Kens ability to pot the important balls at the right time, made it a frustrating evening for the away player, as the frame disintegrated for him, Ken put his side 120 plus up going into the last,  J Fallows v M Ilyas this proved to be an uphill battle for John, with Maj doing enough to frustrate the away player to very few chances, which saw the Maddocks B side through to the second round of the Team ko, in which all players paid their part, a great victory for them and well done. Maddocks D v Shifnal F saw Cheryl caswell make a good start for her team with some good pots getting the better of J Bristoe. Then with Shifnal f taking the next 3 frames courtesy of S Rowley, C Painter then R Wright clearing up to win on black it was down to the two anchor men to battle out. With Roy Adams taking an early advantage for the home team things were looking good but needing 3 snooker on the brown D peplow seemed to be doing the impossible and dragged it back, until Roy potted to blue and pink to clinch it for the home team!, Bayley Q v 2nd Club B. The 1st round of the cup saw the second match up of these teams this season, with 2nd Club hoping to exact revenge. Frame 1 saw Chris Cotterill get off to a bright start for the visitors with a 47 - 33 victory over Rob Cook. Frame 2 had the tables reversed as Bayley's Steve Weatherall had a similar points win over a battling Ian Talbot. Frame 3 witnessed the emergence of (Cup maestro) Chris Fletcher putting in a captains performance with a convincing 55 - 19 win over Nick Holmes. Frame 4 provided a Keith Mears trademark 3 cushion escape from snooker with the finest of glances on the chosen yellow, but could not stop the free flowing potting machine that is Lee Newton as he won 86-28. This left 2nd Club captain with an 85 point deficit to make up, and although he made a bright start, it was Richard Tranter including a 21 break that forced 2nd Club's Roger Smith to throw in the towel, with a 277 - 150 win for the Bayley lads. Shifnal D v Anstice B, Anstice started brightly, with noel stones knocking in a 30 break to defeat T Askew 94-34, frame 2 saw the welcome return for Arthur Aston who potted well, but unfortunately for him, so did his opponent S Wimbush taking the frame 76-39, the next two saw Anstice increase their lead with wins from N Wallcroft & G Hammond beating G French and N Simpson, Shifnals sole winner was R Goldie beating W Watson 55-26, but all too late as Anstice progress through to the next round. Eden A v Bayley A, Pretty much all over with after the 1st frame where Mick Reynolds was in great form. A 5 minute 2nd frame between Steve and Chris ended close, followed by another big win for Eden’s roger Lewis which gave us an unassailable lead. Rich Jones then followed on from his league form with two 20 breaks in his victory. Going into the last frame with a 150 point lead, the big guns from both teams had a good potting game with Steve clearing the colours to take the frame, Bayley F Beat Lds G - Phil Whitby put his best performance of the season in to beat John Jones by a convincing 78.  It was always going to be a struggle for Lds G when Mick Hughes beat Graham Copson by 36 to give Bayley a 114 lead but to their credit Rob Withington and Tommy Bell beat Graham Darrall and Alan Turner respectively to leave a 72 point deficit in the last.  Roy Levenue and Andy Kendrick shared the spoils throughout the final frame and although Roy won the frame the match ended in a comfortable win for the Bayley side. Newport A V Hadley B; Laki Badhan opened with a 24 break on his way to beating Wai Loon Loo 86 - 24. Daz Pountney took the second frame for Hadley with a 69 - 11 win over Rushpal Bassi. Mokesh mehmi took Newport's first frame of the evening with a 50 - 43 win over Jon Wright. Mick Turnock then lost 21 - 61 to Ken Booty to overhaul the handicap of 115. In the last frame, Mark Hebden kept up his 100% record this season, beating Dave Smout 49 - 43, but it was too little too late for Newport. Hadley taking the match 302 – 270, there were also wins for Newport B, Bayley D, Coddon C, Dawley B, Broseley A, Anstice A is through to the next round with a superb win over Dawley Social C, Maddocks C, Results not in Coddon B v Allscott, Eden B v Lds B & Lds C
