TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 21st October 2009

Bayley A will consider their result against Anstice A very favourably in view of their recent form. The Bayley side were at home, and Arthur Burrows lost the opening frame to away player, Steve Camp. Bob Mason suffered the same fate in his frame with Ian Duffy, but in the next Steve Nicholls had a fine win over Keith Price. Steve Fletcher, still a little out of form since his return from abroad then lost to Neil Price. In the last frame the league saw the return of another good snooker player, Adam Moore, and he came up against Chris Morgan-Adams. Chris played very well and won this one 60-43.

Maddocks C are joint second in the division and kept their impetus going with a 3-2 victory over Shifnal F, at the Maddocks club. Darren Wincott beat Spencer Rowley in the first frame, thereby keeping Spencer still waiting for his first win of the season. Darren Wilkie made it two for the Maddocks side, with an easy win over John Briscoe. Chris Painter for Shifnal, pulled one back when he was matched with Joe Oliver, but Ian Cleary won the match in the next as he got the better of Dave Peplow. Steve Hassack lost the last to Chris Petford which gave Shifnal their second point of the evening.

Carl Walker, playing Simon Biddulph in the first frame, got off to a good start and quickly amassed a 30+ point’s advantage. However, Simon came back well with some good snooker of his own. With the colours remaining the frame could have gone either way but unfortunately for Carl the Maddocks man had an horrendous fluke on the brown which left him perfect on the blue. Simon potted blue & pink to seal the frame 53 points to 39.

Next up Andy "Chop" Garbett for Dawley played Ian Eldridge. Ian was on fire in this frame, starting with a little 37 break. Ian's next visit saw him compile an excellent 59 break, unfortunately he missed a black which would have equalled the high break for this season so far. Ian won the frame 96 points to nil.

Well played Ian .....................Unlucky Chop !!!

The third frame saw Pete Nolan playing Phil Davies. Pete's form of late has been very good and he was soon into his stride with some good potting and safety play in this frame. As much as Phil dug in the Flying Scotsman was in no mood to see his team go three nil down and with more good snooker ran out a comfortable winner with a frame score of 52 points to 21.

Frame four. Mark Jones v Ian Skelton. Ian quickly went into a 35 point lead in this frame. The Dawley mon clawed his way back and with the colours remaining Ian had a 7 point advantage. After some good safety play from both players Ian potted a trademark long yellow from which he cleared to pink to win the frame and match for Maddocks with a frame score of 57 points to 30.

The final frame saw the "Owd Timers" up against each other : Rick Bailey playing Dave France. A cagey start saw both players showing respect for each other gained over many years on the circuit. Rick got his "A" game going and with some decent snooker took the frame and another point for Dawley with a frame score of 57 points to 28.

Broseley entertained newcomers to this division, Audco C this week, and although securing a 3-2 win, I’m sure Audco will be well pleased with this result against a former championship side. Graeme Long had breaks of 42 and 31 in the opening frame when he played Mick Pink. The breaks didn’t stop there however, as Paul Proctor from Audco, knocked in a 40 in his frame with Neil Caswell. So, one each and in the next frame, yet another break, and once again from Audco. This time it was Roger Lewis who had a 46 against Simon McLeod, and to go on and win the frame. What an exciting match to watch this must have been, as in the next frame Mick Brezwyn made a 39, to take this frame 72-31, and level the scores. No breaks in the last frame but it was John Banks who gained the match win for Broseley when he beat John Williams.

Coddon A welcomed their fist match win of the season when they were the home side to Little Dawley A. Dave Lloyd had a 34 break to put the home side in front with a victory over the useful Lee Elcock. Mark Wall lost to Graham Wiley, and that levelled the match. Coddon then went behind as the experienced Jesse Lowe got the better of Andy Jones. A tight frame followed with Tony Garmson for the home side, just pinching this frame from Stu Russel, 46-43. In the deciding frame it was Steve Downes who took the match for Coddon with a comfortable win over Ade Henry.

Second Division

Little Dawley G, who were going so well last season, were up against Min Fats A this week at the Dawley club. Tommy Bell played the first frame losing to Min Fats Neil Pearson’s. Roy Levenue met defeat when he was matched with Mick Pearson but it was Rob Withington who stemmed the flow with a win over Aaron O’Donnell. The next frame looked promising for the Dawley side, but even with a 26 break from Graham Copson, it was not enough to take the frame from Dale Blagborough. 3-1 soon became 4-1 to the Min Fats side, with Dave Levenue losing out to Phil Bufton. This puts Min Fats two points clear in the division, although some teams have a game in hand.

Bayley F were at home to Coddon C, and encountered a very hard fought match. Phil Whitby opened the match and Phil ran out an easy winner in the end playing Matt Bothwell. Alan Turner then came up against Mark Tusel, and this was a tough one! Mark potted some great balls, and the frame ended with Mark attempting a difficult black, missing it, and leaving an un-missable pot for Alan. Mick Hughes was always playing against the odds in his frame, and came back very well in a high scoring game to beat Ollie Wall 70-62. Graham Darrall’s score line looked impressive, but that wasn’t the case at all, as he had no run of the ball whatsoever, and had to draw on all his resources to win his frame with Daniel Ballard. A below par Andy Kendrick lost the last frame to Garry Owen, that score, Andy 10, Garry 60.

Second Club A have only won one match so far this season, and despite having the home advantage, it stayed that way this week when they played Little Dawley C. Ian Ferriday, only losing one frame so far this season, kept up his record as he played Joe Rixom and put the first point on Second Clubs card. Carl Kesterton levelled the match with a convincing win over Dave Welsh, and in the next the Dawley side gained the advantage courtesy of John Calvert defeating Paul Crooks. Mike Thompson did his best to get the scores level, but just lost out to Gary Walls, 63-50. Toby Welsh finished the match with an easy victory playing Peter Randall.

Maddocks D were the home side in the match between themselves and Dawley B, and although it was the Dawley side who took the match, Maddocks have the advantage in the table with a game in hand. Ken Davies opened the match, meeting up with Grant Heighway. Grant took this one putting the Dawley side 1-0 up. Graham Arnold for Maddocks, replied in good style winning easily against Liam Goodman. Ian Courtney also had a very easy win to put Maddocks 2-1 up, this time it was Nigel Brazenall on the receiving end. A very close and high scoring frame ensued, and this time the frame went to Dawley with Barry Roden scoring 71, and Maj Ilyas 64. Cheryl Caswell played the deciding frame, and this was against Wayne Weeks, playing his first frame of the season, although having played in the league in the past. A good debut from Wayne’s point of view as he gave his team the match win, beating Cheryl 59-32.

Third Division

The leaders of this division met this week, and it was Little Dawley B with the home advantage against favourites for the title, Hadley A, or are they! This looked a hard fought match according to the card, with a couple of surprising results! Richie Heighway was first to the table when he played Kevin Whitehead. It was Kevin who won this one, and his team mate, Ken Booty made it 2-0 to Hadley, defeating Sam Drake. The next frame saw Colin Gittus playing Darren Pountney, with Colin getting the first point for the home side. The next frame was very close, but this one went to John Wright who beat Mark Randall 54-45. So with the match win secure for the Hadley side, it was Matt Bailey of Hadley versus Chris Lawson. Chris played very well, making a 29 break and beating Matt, 72-28.

Anstice B are only a couple of points off the leaders, and this week they took on the new team in our league, Allscott. Met these lads in the cup this week, nice bunch of fellas, and I hope they are enjoying the league. Allscott took an early lead with an emphatic win from Steve Powell who beat John Darrock 76-3. Unfortunately that was their only point of the evening as Mick Cahill was too good for Aaron Griffiths, and the match score was levelled. Noel Stones beat Dave Finney in a close frame, that score, Noel 57, Dave 47. George Hammond had an easy win over Tony Lacey to make it 3-1 but in the last, Kev Welland from the Allscott side gave Billy Watson a run for his money, but ended up losing the frame 44-35.

Bayley D are on the same point’s total this week with Anstice after recording a 5-0 victory over the Second Club B team. This was a very one sided affair with Mark Bedall winning against Nick Holmes, 43-17. Craig Whiteheads frame was similar with Craig beating Alan Kynaston 69-15. The next frame saw Dave Williams rack up 67 points to John Hayward’s 12. The match continued in this vein with Jim Lewis beating Keith Mears, 58-15. The last frame saw Dave Dudley complete the rout with a 65-25 win playing Chris Cotterill.

This will be a very interesting division this season!

Dawley C lost their first match of the season this week when they were at home to the Shifnal D side. Sean Cross started well for the home side with a win against Terry Askew. Neil Davies lost out to Sanjay Chahan to level matters, and then in the third it was Pete Wharton who put the visitors into the lead when he defeated Chris Gifford. Geoff French made it 3-1 with a win over Andy Shaw, and it was left to Dawley player, Luke Edwards to gain the second point of the evening for his side with a win over Barrie Easthope.

Hadley A, mid table, were the home side in the fixture with Newport B. Richard “Tugboat” Benting put the home side ahead with a win over Mat Pevit. Roy Francis made it 2-0 defeating Allan Davies. Much closer the next with Tony Garmson stealing it for Hadley, Tony 44, Steve Speake 40. The tide turned after that frame as Les Stirling got his first win of the season playing Al Francis. Iain Atkinson lost the last frame to Richard Goldie, but did manage to score three points, although he was very ill!

Coddon B and Bayley Q are on the same points total after they were pitted against each other this week, at the Coddon club.Mokesh Lal lost out to Chris Durham in the first frame and that looked like a black ball finish according to the score card. Graham Neil put the Coddon side level beating Chris Bates 43-34, another black ball finish? Dave Lloyd junior then put Coddon into the lead when he beat Chris Fletcher. Steve Weatherall took the next 48-35, playing Roger Lewis, and in the last it was Andrew Fletcher giving the Bayley lads the match win with a victory over Brian McMillan, that score, 43-39. So was it four wins on the black ball, or a played out match with the scores making it appear that way?
