TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 10th September 2008

The new season kicked off this week, unfortunately with one team less than last year. Last season’s first and second in this division, met each other in the opening game at Shifnal this week, with Shifnal B taking all five points from Broseley A. To be fair, none of the Broseley team looked to have got near wining a frame according to the scores. Matt Davies had a 46 break in his match with Carl Walker, and in the last frame Angus Way knocked in a 56 against Mick Brezwyn.

Dawley A who just stayed in this division courtesy of Audco A being relegated, got off to a flyer with a 5-0 win at home to newly promoted Coddon C. A great start with two new signings making their debut, Liam Goodman and Joseph Pugh.

The second promoted and more experienced Coddon A, back in the first division again, fared slightly better when they were at home to Anstice A. Although it was a 4-1 win to the Anstice team, some of the matches were very close. Mark Wall and Tony Garmson both lost on the black!

Another close match which didn’t belie the score, was that of Maddocks A at home to Minnesota B. This result was 4-1 to the Minnesota Fats side, but Darren Weston took his frame 52-50 against Ian Skelton by taking the last three colours to win. Phil Davis from Maddocks won on the pink, and Keith Price took all the colours to beat Ian Eldridge.

Little Dawley A entertained the Maddocks C side at Little Dawley and were 3-1 up until Steve Hassock won the last frame 50-42 playing Gaz Walls.

Bayley A had a local derby with their Bayley E side, and lost this match 3-2. The matches won by the Bayley A side saw Chris-Morgans Adams with a break of 37, winning his frame with Andy O’Brien, and Steve Fletcher having a 35 break to win his game 67-2 against N. Birch. Steve Nichols produced two breaks of 21 and 22 but the fouls he gave away neutralised the score line some what, and Ali Jones won the frame 65-49.

Second Division

Maddocks B were at home to Little Dawley G and didn’t have the best of starts to the season. The only frame they took was Steve Pritchard beating Rob Withington 68-56 in a high scoring game. Result, 4-1 to Little Dawley G.

Bayley F, formerly Audco A, who were relegated last season started their season with a local derby match and beat the Bayley B side in a very entertaining match. The result was a 3-2 win to Bayley F with super sub Phil Whitby stepping in to win his frame 54-41 against Mark Francis. Andy Kendrick won comfortably with a 24 break during the match, and Alan turner won the decider against Dan Oliver in a very competitive last frame.

Comrades that were, are now playing as Shifnal A after their promotion from the third division, and recorded a good 3-2 victory over the Shifnal F team. Steve Jones for the A side had a 27 break in his match with Chris Painter.

Minnesota Fats A were at home to the newly promoted Audco C, who acquitted themselves very well in their first time in this division. This team could be the dark horse of the division this season, although losing 3-2 to the Minnesota Fats A side. New signing for Audco Colin Pink had a 27 break in his match with Neil Pearson and Paul Proctor also had a 32 in his win over Matthew Kilvert. The rest of the games were also tight finishes.

Third Division

Maddocks D couldn’t have asked for a better start when they played away to Little Dawley B. Probably history made here with a girl competitor from each team taking part, and how welcome they are too! This match went to the visiting side 5-0, and looking at the score card it looked quite a comfortable win too, although when you have not seen the match, always an easy conclusion to draw!

Hadley A were at home to the little Dawley C side, and after a convincing start by Kev Whitehead beating Sam Hamilton, that turned out to be the only point of the evening for Hadley, the backbone of our league.

Newport A also an ex Audco side, are now playing as Newport A from the British Legion and played their own B side. Andy Yates got them off to a good start with a 32 break in his game, and although the match swung like a pendulum, the Newport A side came out 3-2 winners after a decider between P. Stokes and John Yapp with P. Stokes being the victor.

Anstice B who promise so much, but have yet failed to deliver, have started their campaign brightly enough with a 3-2 win over the 2nd Club B side. It will be interesting to see how they fare this season?
