Shifnal B, at home this week, will probably be the only
challengers to Minnesota B, but they made no headway on the
leaders this week although recording a 4-1 victory. Still
lots of games to go though, and if their in touch at the end
of the season it will be very interesting as they meet each
other in the final match. Aaron Sparkes had a convincing win
over Nick Pearce of the Coddon A side, 75-10, and in the next
frame John Fallows played Steve Downes, who is enjoying a
good run at the moment. However, in this frame it was John
who won the frame 77-36. The winning run carried on with a
very convincing 97-1 win, when Matt Davies played Andy Jones.
In scintillating form, next up was Angus Way, who had a cracking
69 in his frame with Tony Garmson, and winning by 94-10. It
was looking good for Shifnal at this stage in the match, but
Mark Wall had different ideas, and Lindsay Knox couldn’t
carry on the impetus. Mark won the last frame, 53-28. Unfortunately
for Coddon A, this puts them second from bottom in this division,
but still in touch with the other teams who are in the relegation
zone.
Minnesota Fats B, still favourites for top honours this season
were away to Cordon C this week, and may have come away a
little disappointed, only securing a 4-1 win against bottom
of the table, Coddon C. Matt Bothwell for Coddon had a 22
break against Keith Price, but Keith also had a break of 41
in the match, and came out a comfortable winner, 94-26. Shaun
Harris, in unbeatable form, then beat Mark Tusel 69-25 to
make it two for Min B. Steady Simon Yeates added the third
point with a victory over Frasier Mackinnon. Darren Weston,
struggling of late, beat Garry Owen in a low scoring frame,
43-13. Then, shock of the evening, well for me anyway! Daniel
Ballard produced a fine performance to topple Craig Reynolds
to gain a point for his team, that score was 48-32 to Daniel.
Little Dawley A had a fine 5-0 win over the Bayley E side
this week to join Maddocks A on level points in the table.
Lee Elcock had breaks of 37 and 26 as he beat Andy O’Brien
with an emphatic win of 87-1. Phil Cottey made it two for
the home side as he beat D. Beyer, 55-30. Jesse Lowe was also
in fine form to take the Little Dawley side 3-0 up, that win
against new signing, S. Adison, 74-21. The next frame was
a lot closer, but Stu Russell just had the edge on John Squire,
that score line 52-43. Ade Henry completed the whitewash with
a 56-13 win over Dave France.
Maddocks A were at home to the Anstice A side, who earlier
in the season looked like making a challenge for the title.
However that challenge seems to be dying a little of recent
weeks. Maddocks won this match 3-2. The first frame was an
intriguing encounter with Ian Eldridge drawn against Neil
Price. Neill had the upper hand for most of the match, only
to see Ian take the last five colours to win on the black.
Impressive snooker from Ian Skelton in the next frame as he
added another win for the Maddocks side. This time, playing
Steve Camp, and that win was 73-2 to Ian, impressive indeed!
Phil Davies was equally decisive with his victory over Nigel
Wallcroft, this time, 62-2 to Phil. The last two frames were
as emphatic as the first three frames with a 57-9 win for
Keith Blackham playing D. Milward, and in the final frame
of the evening, Laki Badhan beating Leigh France 54-9.
Mid table Dawley A were at home to Maddocks C, and the Maddocks
side will be well pleased with this win away from home. Steve
Hassack drew first blood for the away side with a decisive
win over mark Jones 63-8, and having a 36 break during the
frame. Pete Nolan for Dawley levelled the frame score with
a narrow win over Joe Oliver, 60-46. Rick bailey seems to
have lost a little form of late, although paired with a formidable
adversary, Darren Wincoot, who took this frame 56-7. Ian Cleary
secured the match for the Maddocks side in another tight frame,
57-43. Sean Nolan, another good young player, gained the last
point for the Dawley team with a score line of 83-1 playing
Graham Hoof.
The Bayley club A side entertained Broseley this week, and
that result was a 4-1 win to Broseley. Struggling to field
a side, Broseley could only produce four players for this
match, hence Bayley A getting their solitary point. Simon
McLeod had a 30 break when he played Spencer Rowley who has
not found any form this season, only winning one frame from
twelve played! Neil Caswell for Broseley made it two beating
Bob Mason 52-28. No player in the third frame and in the fourth
frame Mick Brezwyn beat Steve Fletcher 60-30. In the last,
Maxwell Hodson put in a good performance but just lost on
the Pink to John Banks. So apart from Coddon C the Bayley
lads find themselves in a relegation battle, but still plenty
of games to go.
Second Division
Audco C take the lead of this division this week after a
4-1 win to the struggling Bayley D, Bayley D being the home
side. Knowing the line-up of Audco, they were my pre-season
favourites for this title, but we shall see. Paul Proctor
for Audco won the first game when he beat Jim Lewis 89-22.
Mick Pink, an ex-team mate of mine, won his fifth game on
the reel against Darren Rhodes, 61-22. The next frame was
very close, with Craig Whitehead for the home side losing
out to Roger Lewis on the black in a low scoring game, 39-31.
Anthony Heathcote then made it 4-0 with his win over Brian
Aberdeen. The last frame was also a close affair, but this
time it was the Bayley Man, Dave Dudley who got Bayley D their
point, defeating D. Berry.
Bayley F were at home to Shifnal F, and did Audco a great
favour by beating the Shifnal lads 4-1. Substitute, Phil Whitby
stood in yet again, and after trailing for much of the frame
laid a good snooker against Chris Painter which put him right
back into the fray. Phil never looked back from thereon in
and took the first point for Bayley F. The next frame saw
Richard Jags playing Rob Wright, with both players missing
good chances. Rob was still favourite to win the frame until
Richard potted the pink, followed by a superb black to win
the frame. Alan Turner played Roy Martin in the next, and
in a close game Roy won this one with a good blue taken using
the rest, and also a good pink cueing off the cushion. Mick
Hughes continued his revival with a comfortable victory over
Dave Peplow. In the last frame Graham Darrell played a controlled
frame of snooker to beat Chris Petford 60-37.
Dawley B lost their third match in a row this week when they
were away to Maddocks B. Maddocks took the first four frames
with Wally Harper getting the team off to a winning start
when he beat Alex Nolan 63-26. Les Hicks won a close game
playing Tom White 61-54 as did his team mate, Doug Morrey
beating new signing, Nigel Brazenall 43-34. John Archer, back
to winning ways added the fourth point when he beat Barry
Roden 67-37. Grant Heighway rescued a point for the Dawley
team when he got the better of Roy Adams, 57-28.
Minnesota A are on level points with Dawley B, and this week
saw Minnesota play the Bayley B side at the Oakengates club.
Neil Pearson had a 29 break during his frame with Craig Baugh,
and won that frame 77-5. A high scoring frame next when Kirk
Stevenson took on Kevin West. Kevin won this one, 70 -30.
Dickie Bedall won his first frame of the season playing Mick
Pearson, followed by Danny Oliver securing the match win by
beating Mick Egan. That was Danny’s ninth successive
win. Phil Bufton got Minnesota their second point of the evening
beating Kelvin McLeod, that score 55-20 to Phil.
Shifnal A are sinking into a relegation battle after their
4-1 defeat at the hands of Second Club A. Ian Ferriday took
the first frame for the away side against Chris Crook. Paul
Crooks made it two winning his frame with Steve Jones and
Toby Welsh adding a third after his match with Gareth Lloyd.
Dave Welsh made it four in a row beating Mark Jones, 62-37.
The final frame saw Tony Lloyd pinch a point back for the
home side with Bob Lane being the loser in a close game, 62-49.
Third Division
Maddocks D hold a firm lead in this division and will be
well pleased with their win against the experienced Anstice
B, who are also in the running to win the honours this season.
Anstice B had the home advantage, but it was Cheryl Caswell
who won the first frame of the evening to set Maddocks on
their way. Cheryl beat John Darrock 71-22. Another fine win
followed this one, and this time it was Ian Courtney beating
Mick Cahill 62-8 to put Maddocks 2-0 up. Noels Stones stopped
the rot in the next frame, and made no mistake in his match,
producing a good 49 break whilst beating Graham Arnold 72-7.
George Hammond levelled the match winning against Maj Ilyas,
and setting up the decider. Fred Spragg took the frame and
the match win as he defeated Steve Smallwood 60-25.
Little Dawley C, in second spot in this division, were away
to Second Club B, and the Little Dawley side won this match
3-2. Joe Rixom got the Dawley lads off to a winning start
when he played Alan Kynaston and won, 49-31. Chris Coterill
made it 1-1 by beating Sam Hamilton 63-42, and that was followed
by Little Dawley regaining the lead, courtesy of Scott Bevan
beating Nick Holmes, 57-23. The Little Dawley side then secured
the match with a win from John Calvert, who beat Keith Mears
52-28. Roger smith took the final frame of the evening with
a 64-32 victory over Carl Kesterton.
Newport A were at home to Shifnal D, and both of these teams
could be fighting it out for a runners up spot towards the
end of the season. Graham Groucott gave Newport the early
lead with a win over Terrie Askew, but Sanjay Chauhan pulled
one back in the next beating Chris Hughes. Pete Smith restored
the lead for Newport with a 69-25 victory over Peter Wharton,
and then Geoff Howells got the better of Arthur Aston for
Newport to go 3-1 up. Barrie Easthope took the last for Shifnal
playing Andy Yates.
Little Dawley B are at the foot of the table and this week
saw them playing at home to Newport B. New signing Richie
Heighway got the Little Dawley side off to a winning start
when he beat Allan Davies 57-33. This win was consolidated
in the next frame when Colin Gittus made it 2-0 by getting
the better of Matt Rivett, 69-2. Ginnette Gittus then played
Richard Goldie in a close game, but Richard won this one,
just, 55-45. Steve Speake then set up a decider between Les
Stirling and Dan Soltys by beating Mark Randall 42-17. In
the final frame Les Stirling won the match for Newport with
a 49-15 victory over Dan.
