Thanks to Bayley E, who haven’t played too well this
season, the first division has become more of an open contest
after this weeks result. Bayley E were visited by Minnesota
Fats B, and it looked like the Bayley side pulled out all
the stops for this one! In the first frame Andy Obrien had
a great win over Keith Price, with a score line of 66-13 to
Andy. Although the second frame was a lot closer, the usually
steadfast Ian Duffy lost out to D. Beyer, 64-61, in the tightest
of frames. John Squire then stepped up and had a brilliant
win over Shawn Harris, 56-46, inflicting the first defeat
of the season over Shawn. Dave France also gave Craig Reynolds
a good run for his money, but Dave lost this frame 61-50.
In the last frame of the evening S. Addison was no match for
Simon Yeates, who took that one 60-5. No result from Shifnal
B yet again, so it’s wait until next week to see if
they make headway over Minnesota Fats B.
Broseley A were at home this week to the Coddon C, team and
this match went to the Broseley team, 5-0. John Banks took
the first with a win over Daniel Ballard. Neil Caswell then
made it two beating Garry Owen. The next frame saw R. Dubiki
get the better of Matt Bothwell, and in the last two frames
Simon McLeod beat Frasier McKinnon, and Mick Brezwyn had a
comfortable victory over Mark Tusel. This win must seal Coddons
return to the second division in all probability?
Anstice A, falling off the pace a little, this week entertained
the Dawley A side and in the first frame, Sean Nolan got the
Dawley side off to a winning start by beating Laki Badhan
53-33. Steve Camp replied for Anstice in a high scoring frame,
and just beating Pete Nolan 64-58, to make it one apiece.
Liam Goodman from Dawley was no match for Neil Price, and
he lost that frame 64-10 to Neil. In the next frame Rick Bailey
levelled the scores with his win over Nigel Wallcroft, 51-13.
In the deciding frame it was Anstice who took the honours
with Keith Blackham gaining victory over Mark Jones, 61-22.
Maddocks A were away to the Coddon C team this week, and
returned with a good 4-1 win to see them in fourth place in
the table. With more consistency, I’m sure this team
could be challenging for more than they do! Anyway, back to
the match, and in the first frame, a rejuvenated Phil Davies
led the Maddocks charge with a comfortable victory over Nick
Pearce, 52-6. After a good run for Coddon, Steve Downes was
next up for Coddon, but lost his second successive frame,
this time to Ian Eldridge, 69-29. Andy Jones fared better
for the Coddon side, but in a close frame Andy lost out to
Leigh France, 59-42. Tony Garmson was able to grab one point
back for the Coddon lads when he beat Dave France, 54-40.
Maddocks C were playing the Bayley A side at Maddocks this
week, with both teams, along with Coddon A, concerned in a
relegation battle. In this match it was the Bayley club which
came out victorious. Chris Morgan-Adams opened the scoring
for the Bayley side by beating Mick Wincott, 55-5. The next
frame was a much closer frame with Bob Mason just edging out
Darren Wilkie on the black ball, 48-44 to put Bayley two up.
Spencer Rowley will have been wondering if he would ever win
another frame after his recent performances, but win he did
against Joe Oliver, and also having a 40 break during the
frame. Spencers team mate, Steve Fletcher then made it 4-0,
also having a 36 break in his 66-1 victory over Ian Cleary.
Graham Hoof got the solitary point for the Maddocks C team
with a 68-31 win over Maxwell Hodson. This result gives the
Bayley side a slender point advantage over Maddocks C.
Second Division
Audco C top of this division received bad news this week,
when their club was finally closed down. Not entirely un-expected,
but never the less a sad blow to the people of Newport, and
for our snooker league. Lots of the campaigners like myself
will miss this venue, as we did the demise of the old St.
Georges institute. Anyway, fair play to the Audco team, they
wasted no time in securing a new venue, which is the Cadbury’s
social club at Knighton, just outside of Newport. Bayley F
were the first side to visit them in this week’s program,
so there was really no home advantage for the Audco side.
I would like to say thanks to the Knighton club for accommodating
Audco, and also add, what a nice venue it is to play snooker.
However, back to business, and this week saw the Bayley F
taking yet another scalp from the top teams in the division.
In the last three weeks Bayley F have defeated Shifnal F,
Little Dawley G, and on their latest outing, Audco C. Audco
won the first frame when John Williams defeated Richard Jags,
62-16. In a tight frame next, Mick Pink had a good frame against
Mick Hughes, but fluked the pink to take Audco into a 2-0
lead. Not looking too good for Bayley F, but then Graham Darrell
stepped up to play Roger Lewis, and in this frame it was Graham
who came out the victor beating Roger 64-29. Anthony Heathcote
then played Andy Kendrick, Andy, back to the fold without
picking up a cue for six weeks, but lo and behold, cueing
as if he had never left the table. “Kenny” produced
a 63-41 win over Anthony. This set up the decider between
Paul Proctor and Alan Turner. What a frame this was! Paul
who is still vying for the most wins situation, potted exceptionally
well, and Alan had to draw on all his experience to stay with
him. Paul potted a good blue, but went in off! A couple of
shots later Alan took a good blue and the pink to win the
frame. A good night, good venue, and as I said last week,
I’m sure Audco will take their spot in the first division.
Dawley B revived their challenge for honours this season,
but still have a lot to do. This week they were at home to
the struggling Bayley D, who have only taken four points from
their last four matches. Dave Dudley put the Bayley lads on
the right road, winning the first frame for his team when
he played Alex Nolan, and beat Alex 56-29. Although Craig
Whitehead put in a good performance against Nigel Brazenall,
it was Nigel who came out the winner on the black ball to
level the scores. Tom White made it 2-1 for Dawley, beating
Mark Bedall 49-31. Another close frame next, with Barry Roden
beating Daz Rhodes 63-53. The last frame saw grant Heighway
beat Dave Williams 58-26 to make it 4-1 to Dawley, and leave
the Bayley lads with an uphill struggle now!
Minnesota Fats A were given a tough match this week, from
Shifnal A, who are at the wrong end of the table at the moment.
Minnesota, the home side, lost the first frame of the evening
when Ian Postins from Shifnal, beat Neil Pearson 65-25. Gaz
Lloyd added the second with a win over Mick Pearson 75-15.
In the next, Mick Egan pulled one back for his team with a
55-23 victory over Tony Lloyd. However, in the next frame,
Shifnal secured the match win when Chris Bristow got the better
of Kirk Stevenson 67-24. Phil Bufton for Minnesota made the
score line respectable, beating Chris Crook 65-46.
Third Division
Maddocks D consolidated their position at the top of the
third division this week with a fine home win playing Newport
A. Newport A have been acquitting them selves well of recent,
but there was no respite form Maddocks D, who look strong
favourites for this title. Fred Spragg for Maddocks won his
frame 53-40 against Chris Hughes, that looked like a black
ball game, but always hard to assume unless stated on the
card. The next frame between Cheryl Caswell and Geoff Grocott
looked to be a cracker too, the score line suggested another
black ball finish, and this one went to Maddocks with a score
of 73-66 to Cheryl. Ian Courtney had an easier victory over
C. Bott, although to be fair to C. Bott, he was having his
first outing in the snooker league! Graham Arnold also had
a comfortable win over Andy Yates, 52-8, as did Maj Ilyas
playing Pete Smith, that score, 73-25 to Maj.
Little Dawley C were playing the other Newport side, Newport
B, at the Newport British Legion. Allan Davies for Newport
lost the opener to Sam Hamilton 41-32, with Richard Goldie
following in the same footsteps, losing out to Joe Rixom,
47-39. Matt Pevit started the comeback for Newport when he
beat John Calvert 44-31, and then Steve Speake levelled the
match score with his win over Pete Randall, 47-35. This set
up the decider between Les Stirling and Carl Kesterton. Les
has been playing good snooker this season, and before last
weeks result had knocked up eight consecutive wins in a row.
However, it wasn’t to be this week as Carl got the better
of Les, and won the frame, and the match for little Dawley,
58-36.
Shifnal D remain in third spot, although five points adrift
from second placed Little Dawley C. Shifnal D played at home,
and took on the Second Club B team. Shifnal went into a 3-0
lead to win this, with Terry Askew getting the match underway,
and beating Alan Kynaston, 57-12. Sanjay Chauhan had a 21
break in his frame with Chris Coterill and won that frame
64-33. Peter Wharton made it 3-0 with a win over Nick Holmes,
39-16. Keith Mears then stepped up for the Second Club and
was in no mood for defeat; Keith knocked in a 20 break during
his frame and racked up a 75-10 victory over Arthur Aston.
A low scoring frame next, but this also went to Second club,
courtesy of Roger Smith beating Geoff French, 41-21.
The next result concerned, was another stunning result in
this weeks fixtures, again from a Bayley side, this time Bayley
Q. Bayley Q took on the Anstice B side this week at the Bayley
venue, and what a win this was! It doesn’t seem that
long since I was playing three of these Anstice lads in the
first division. How time flies? The first frame of the evening
saw Steve Weatherall come up against Noel Stones, almost invincible
in this division. That wasn’t the case on this evening
though, as Steve won his match with Noel, 45-33. Robert Cook
carried on the good work with a 65-28 win over Mick Cahill,
that score, 65-28 to Rob. So the winning mood, set up by Steve
and Robert, must have inspired their team, as next up, Chris
Durham added another point by beating George Hammond, this
time, 60-33 to Chris. It looked to be all one way traffic,
and the next frame nearly went to Bayley as well, but despite
a good effort from Chris Fletcher, John Darrock beat Chris
on the black. This hiccup didn’t stem the flow in any
way, as Chris Bates made it 4-1 to the Bayley side, when he
defeated Steve Smallwood, 68-34. So what a week for the Bayley
teams, with three of the teams beating top opposition in this
weeks fixtures!
At the bottom of the division it was a local derby match
with Little Dawley B playing Little Dawley D. Little Dawley
B started off with the first win, this going to Richie Heighway
when he beat Andy Shaw. A close, and high scoring frame ending
on the black, Richie63, Andy 58. The next frame was equally
as close, but this result went to the D side, with Danny Bedworth
getting the better of Pete Clarke, 39-36. Sean Cross made
it 2-1 to the D side with a 54-12 win playing Colin Gittus.
The next frame, unfortunately for Little Dawley D, was a walkover,
with no player available. The last frame of the evening went
to Dan Soltys who beat Chris Gifford 69-30.
Finally, there is a snooker meeting at the Bayley Club Thurs.
19th Mar. at 7-30 pm, and the committee would be pleased to
see people there, if anyone would like to attend.
