Minnesota Fats B lost their first match of the season
this week when they played the Shifnal B side at the Minnesota
Fats club. Keith Price took the first frame for the home side
making a break of 33 in his win over John Fallows, 73-31.
The next frame yielded a bigger break, this time from Kevin
Uzzel of Shifnal who had a 54 against Darren Weston, that
score 84-9. The almost invincible Matt Davies then took another
frame for Shifnal, this time playing Craig Reynolds. Ian Duffy
levelled the frame scores beating Aaron Sparkes and leaving
a deciding frame between Simon Yeates and Angus Way. Angus
took the frame and the match with his win, 71-47.
So, Shifnal made the deficit with Minnesota Fats one point
less, as did Antice A this week. Antice A were home to the
Bayley E side and managed a 3-2 win. Andy Obrien gave the
away side their first point with a win over Neil Price 48-36.
Laki Badhan made the match level by defeating D. Beyer 46-34.
The match then swung back to Bayley E with Ali Jones beating
Keith Blackham. Nigel Wallcroft had a comfortable win against
Dave France, and that sent this match to a decider. The last
frame was won by Steve Collins playing Steve Hoof, who won
the match for Anstice. After the Christmas break all top three
teams have difficult matches to play so I’m sure it
will get very interesting at the top of the table.
Coddon C were the home side in their 5-0 defeat from Maddocks
A, and looking at the score card there weren’t really
any close games. Leigh France beat Mick Stokes in a low scoring
frame, followed by Phil Davies beating Matt Bothwell in the
next. Ian Skelton had a 40 break in his match with Garry Owen,
and ran out a 95-10 winner. Ian Eldridge also had an easy
win over Frasier Mackinnon, and in the last frame Dave France
beat Mark Tusel.
The Bayley A side entertained Dawley A, and this match resulted
in a 3-2 win for the Dawley men. Dawley took the first two
frames with Sean Nolan beating Steve Nichols, and Pete Nolan
beating Spencer Rowley. Bob Mason pulled one back for the
Bayley when he got the better of Mark Jones. Liam Goodman
then gained the match win in a low scoring frame with Chris
Morgan-Adams. In the last frame Steve Fletcher won comfortably
against Rick Bailey. Apart from Coddon C, it’s anyone’s
guess who will be staying up from the bottom four!
Maddocks C and Coddon A are in the four teams above mentioned,
and in this weeks fixtures these two teams were playing at
the Maddocks club. Maddocks took an early lead thanks to Mick
Wincott beating Andy Jones, but Mark Wall then beat Steve
Hassack to square the match. Joe Oliver restored the lead
for Maddocks with a win over Nick Pearce. The pendulum swung
the other way again, this time for Coddon and Tony Garmson
defeating Graham Hoof. In a very close deciding frame it was
Steve Downes who just got the better of Ian Cleary to give
Coddon the spoils. Both teams are now on equal points.
Second Division
Little Dawley G took on Shifnal A this week at Little Dawley,
and in spite of losing three matches in a row, still find
themselves two points clear in the division. Little Dawley
started well winning the first frame when G. Clements beat
M. Wordsell. G. Lloyd then beat Graham Copson to make it 1-1
with the score being 60-58 to the Shifnal player. Shifnal
then took a lead courtesy of C. Crook who beat Graham Wiley
61-39. Roy Levenue set up a decider by winning against M.
Jones in a one sided frame, that score 51-2 to Roy. In a high
scoring frame C. Bristow defeated Rob Withington 74-52.
Shifnal F were at home to Minnesota Fats A, who are in mid
table position at the moment, and in this match the home side
came out the winners by the odd frame. A close encounter the
first frame with Rob Wright overcoming Mick Pearson 56-52
to give the Shifnal lads’ a good start. However, in
the next frame Nick Pearson levelled with a comfortable win
over Chris Painter. Mick Egan then took Minnesota Fats into
the lead by beating Roy Martin. Chris Petford had a nice 41
break in his frame with Phil Bufton, and came out of that
one winning 66-29. The decider went to Dave Peplow when he
beat Kirk Stevenson in the last.
Dawley B keep the pressure on, just one point behind the
above mentioned, and just three points off the current leaders,
Little Dawley G. Dawley B were playing Bayley B, at Dawley,
and Kev Jones gave the home side the lead after beating D.
Stokes 51-40. Grant Heighway, in good form still, then made
it two beating C. Baugh. Dan Oliver, unbeaten for seven matches
now, was in no mood to change that situation and duly won
his frame playing Ian Ward to get the visitors there first
point on the card. Barry Roden stopped the comeback, and won
his frame and the match by defeating Richard Bedall. K. West
took the last point for Bayley against Alex Jones, final score,
3-2 to Dawley B.
As so often happens with local derby matches, the odd point
one way or the other decides the match, and this was the case
when Bayley F and Bayley D met this week. An epic battle in
the first frame between Graham Darrell and Dave Dudley took
one hour and twenty minutes. More tactics have never been
seen since the second world war, but some great safety play
by both players, with Graham clawing back a 22 deficit, and
go slightly in front of Dave. However, in the last few remaining
colours it was Dave who came out the winner, 62-45. Richard
Jaggs potted well against Craig Whitehead, but Craig, (great
cue action) knocked some really good balls in to win that
frame 54-31. Andy Kendrick was too strong for Darren Rhodes,
so Bayley F got their first point with the win from Andy.
Mick Hughes made it 2-2 beating Brian Aberdeen to set up the
decider between Jim Lewis and Alan Turner. After a shaky start,
and with a little good fortune, Alan found some potting form
to take the frame and match, 58-9.
Third Division
Maddocks D with a bye this week, have the comfort zone of
a five points lead over second placed Antice B. The Anstice
team were down at Newport British legion this week where they
played the Newport A side. Noel Stones won the first for Anstice
against Colin Austin, and Mick Cahill followed that win up
by adding a second beating Chris Hughes. Colin Farge replied
with a win for Newport over Billy Watson but in the next frame
George Hammond took frame and match beating new signing Trevor
Smith. Andy Yates, playing well of late, won the last frame
beating Steve Smallwood 37-16. The Newport side could also
be vying for honours this season if they keep up their current
form!
Shifnal D, at home to Little Dawley B won this match 3-2.
This match was too and fro with Shifnal taking the first,
Terry Askew winning against Dan Soltys, then Andrew Clarke
hitting back 53-28 playing Sanjay Chauhan. Pete Wharton restored
the lead to Shifnal, Pete Wharton 64, Colin Gittus 53, a close
frame that one. In the next Mark Randall levelled the scores
when he got the better of Geoff French, 39-23, so setting
up another deciding match, this time between Barrie Easthope
and Ginnette Gittus. Barrie won this frame 64-35.
Bayley Q are struggling to find any rhythm so far this season,
and in this week’s fixture, although having home advantage
lost their match with Newport B 3-2. Chris Durham got the
lead for Bayley with his win over A. Davies, but Richard Goldie
beating Chris Fletcher made it 1-1. The result might have
been different if Chris had potted the brown instead of mistakenly
potting the black having already potted the black as a free
ball! Steve Weatherall had a 29 break in his match with M.
Revit, and a comprehensive score line of 72-18. The next frame
saw home player Richard Tranter lose out to Steve Speake,
and that left the final frame to Chris Bates and Les Stirling
to battle for the match win. This frame went to Les and gave
Newport the victory.
The Second Club B were at home to the much improved Hadley
A who are putting a few good results together lately. Alan
Kynaston for the home side had a good win over one of Hadley’s
star players when he beat Kevin Whitehead 45-35. Ken Booty
replied for Hadley beating Keith Mears and his team mate,
Richard Benting gave Hadley a 2-1 lead when he got the better
of Chris Cotterhill. Nick Holmes then beat Allen Francis,
and guess what? Another deciding frame. This one went to the
Hadley side with Iain Atkinson beating Roger Smith 57-29.
