Team Knockout
Bayley F v Shifnal A. In frame one, R Jaggs faced C Bristow,
and it was the away player who started well, knocking in some
brilliant pots to restrict Richard limited opportunities,
Chris eventually winning 85-32. In the next the league treasurer
Andy Kendrick played G Lloyd. It was good to see Andy has
not lost his potting touch and he put his team back in the
match winning 83-27. The third saw Mick Hughes play C Crook,
a game of two potters, and they matched each other throughout
the frame, Chris eventually taking it 65-56. In the next frame
the league secretary Alan turner played the Shifnal Captain
Mark Jones. Alan started brightly in the frame and was 28
in front going into last three colours, but Mark responded
with three great pots to close the deficit to 64-54. That
left Shifnal 16 points up going into the last, but Graham
Darrel played a fantastic match to beat S Jones and put the
Bayley side through.
On the other table Bayley D faced Shifnal B, who are just
coming into some good form in division one. With the Bayley
side having 140 points start on the handicap, A Sparkes set
about reducing the deficit in his match against Jim Lewis.
He knocked in an early break of 33 and things looked good,
but Jim responded well, eventually losing 44-70. In frame
two, Craig Whitehead took on John Fallows and it was the away
player again who took the early initiative, leaving Craig
very few chances John eventually winning 95-13. The third
frame saw Dave Dudley with the unenviable task of trying to
halt Matt Davies, and in the early stages of the frame Dave
held Matty at bay, but a quick fire 40 from Matt put the Shifnal
man 50 in front, eventually winning 93-17. In the fourth,
Daz Rhodes played Linsay Knox, and Daz produced some fantastic
potting to put him into an early lead, and even though Linsay
came back well, Daz took the final few colours running out
the winner 56-43. This left the Bayley side 37 points behind
going into the last and unfortunately for Dave Williams, his
opponent Angus Way is in good form and wrapped things up for
the away side 62-24.
There was a derby match at the Anstice, with the A side facing
the B team (the B side receiving 150 points on the handicap).
Noel Stones set the B side up with a fantastic win against
Neil Price 55-50, and in the second Steve Camp played John
Darrock, both players potting well. Steve ran out the winner
68-55. In frame three a brilliant performance from Laki Badhan
put the Anstice A side back in the match. In his frame against
Mick Cahill, he knocked in a break of 60 which knocked Mick
out of his stride, Laki took the frame 101-18. The fourth
saw a tight frame between Keith Blackham and George Hammond,
plenty of safety in the early stages, George took an early
lead, but a good fight back from Keith saw him take the frame
64-54. This left the A side 36 points behind going into the
last, and up stepped Nigel Wallcroft to put in a fine performance
against an unlucky Billy Watson. Nigel potted well throughout
taking the frame 83-31 and putting Anstice A through to the
semis.
The other match in the team knockout saw Maddocks A defeat
Broseley A, (no card received) unfortunately I understand
the Broseley Side only had 4 players, so had to concede 147
points on the handicap, which proved too much to pull back.
Consolation Cup
In the Bayley Q (215) against 2nd Club Trench (190) game,
the first frame saw Steve Weatherall play Chris Cotterill.
It proved to be the tightest frame of the evening as after
showing some positive signs, Steve gained a good lead on the
colours and then some bad luck and a couple of poor shots
meant he ended up losing 61-60. In the second frame, Chris
Bates produced a great performance, potting brilliantly throughout
and beating Alan Kynaston 71-19. In the next frame Rob Cook
played Nick Holmes. Both players struggled to find their rhythm
early on and Nick took the final colours to run out the winner
43-29. In frame four, Keith Mears reduced the deficit for
the away side by some 38 points, with another good potting
display, defeating Chris Durham 82-44. This left the Bayley
side 25 points up going into the last, in what proved to be
a tense finale. Richard Tranter for the home side didn’t
get things off to a good start and saw the Bayley handicap
removed before he’d barely potted a ball. Things then
improved and the game looked like it was going to be a very
close finish with just two balls left, but to no avail as
Roger found himself potting a fairly straightforward pink
to win the match and take the 2nd Club into the semi-finals.
Other results were Coddon A defeated LDS D 407-378 and Shifnal
F beat Dawley B 314-213.
There is no result in yet from the Dawley A v Newport B match.
