The last card of the season arrived today, so I am writing
a general report of the season. Thanks to you all for taking
part in the snooker league and I hope you have all enjoyed
your season, no matter what the outcome.
As you will have gleaned from my temporary
report last week, there were some exciting finales
to the season. First, but not foremost, was the result between
Shifnal B, at home to Min B, playing for the first division
title. Shifnal had it all to do, but all to do they did! Matt
Davies opened the last match of the season, and kept his one
hundred percent record against Craig Reynolds, who to some
degree has had a disappointing season by his standards? Matt
had a 61 break during his frame with Craig. 1-0 to Shifnal.
Next up was Aaron Sparkes, who in a very close game beat Keith
Price. Angus Way followed this win by getting the better of
Simon Yeats. So looking promising for Shifnal, and the next
frame proved decisive as John Fallows beat Shawn Harris. That
win was enough to see Shifnal win the title, in spite of Ian
Duffy having a comprehensive win over Lindsay Knox, and getting
a great break of 64 during the frame. Although the match wins
were level, Shifnal win the title because of head to head
wins. Congratulations to both teams for making a brilliant
last match scenario.
Maddocks A finished in style with a 5-0 demolition of the
relegated Coddon C, and not really a close frame to report!
Maddocks A are a team full of promise, and if they ever gel
for a whole season, who knows?
Anstice A did very well with their challenge, and ended the
season with a 3-2 defeat to Bayley E. Bayley E, who have fought
relegation in the past, stayed the course comfortably this
season.
The above mentioned, “Last card of the season”
came from LDS A who finished mid table, and lost their last
match away to Broseley, 3-2. In fact Broseley finished six
points above LDS A in spite of an unsettled team all season.
Dawley A were near mid-table also, and finished their season
with a 3-2 win over Bayley A. Bayley have fought well to stay
up this time, so well done to them!
The last two teams to mention were both depending on the
result of their last match, and in this instance, it was Coddon
A playing Maddocks C for survival in the first division. Although
very close. it turned out to be Coddon staying in spite of
losing 3-2 to Maddocks C.
Second Division
Audco C, my favourites to win this division, did so, and
by winning the last match against Second Club A, sent the
Trench lads back to the second division. Audco won this division
well, and now they join the first; that will be a different
proposition for the Audco team, but I’m sure they will
enjoy it!
Shifnal F also go up, and in style after finishing with a
5-0 win over Min Fats A.
Little Dawley G punched above their weight, with due respect,
and are entitled to feel disappointed after a cracking shot
at promotion. Never mind lads, always next season.
Bayley F will feel the same disappointment after collapsing
in the last two matches of the season, losing eight frames
in a row.
Bayley B lost their last home game to Dawley Social, 3-2,
with both teams finishing in mid division.
Last but not least, the Bayley D side, who are relegated,
saw off Bayley F 3-2 in their last match, winning the first
three frames before Andy Kendrick and Graham Darrell saved
face for Bayley F.
Third Division
In this division, Maddocks D easily won promotion without
playing in the last match, due to having a bye.
In a local derby, LDS C playing their C team won that match
4-1, and LDS C go up with Maddocks.
Anstice B finished third after their attempt for promotion,
and they played Newport A, who finished fourth.
Shifnal D lost out 4-1 to bottom of the table, LDS B, who
in their words said, “We will be back”
Bayley Q ended mid table as did Newport B. These teams played
each other in the last match and this went to Newport B, 3-2.
Although Hadley lost their final match 4-1 at home to Second
Club B, this season they finished second from bottom.
There are rumours flying about that there may be more teams
departing from our snooker league this coming season, which
will be a great shame. Over the years I have seen our league
diminish from four divisions, and forty eight teams, to the
current three divisions, and thirty four teams. Our local
paper, the Shropshire Star, as you all know, abandoned us
quite some time ago to give more coverage to pool and fishing.
This hasn’t helped our sport at all, so if anyone has
suggestions, or maybe interested in inviting teams from another
league to participate, by all means contact me (Alan.Turner@telfordsnooker.com)
or bring your ideas to our monthly meeting at the Sir John
Bayley club which is on the third Thursday of each month.
Please note that we have pencilled in a date for the presentation,
which will be at the Holiday Inn on Friday the second of October.
Once again, on behalf of myself and the committee, thanks
for your support through out the season.
