TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 12th September 2007

Back to business this week as the Telford snooker league broke off for the new season.

Champions Minnesota Fats B met the newly formed Shifnal B at Oakengates and suffered a 3-2 loss. Shaun Harris beat Matt Davies on the black ball, but even that didn’t stop the Shifnal side from securing a 3-2 win away from home.

Broseley A, away from home to Anstice A, also secured a 3-2 win with breaks from Graeme Long of 32, and in the same frame Neil Price recording a 30, but losing the frame to Graeme. Simon Thomas for Broseley handed out a whitewash to Nigel Wallcoft with a 43 break during that frame.

Maddocks A started well with a 4-1 win over the LDS A side, with Maddocks player Les Stirling losing the only frame of the evening by 61-60.

Newly promoted Audco A secured a 5-0 win over Bayley F, with two frames being decided on the black ball. Phil Whitby played his first game of the season for 18 months, but you wouldn’t have noticed he had been away from the table for so long.

In a local derby match Bayley A beat their Bayley E team 3-2.

Following promotion from last year Maddocks C first game back in the top flight was a visit to Dawley A. First out was Darren Wincott, who immediately found his form and with a couple of mid twenty breaks did not give his opponent Chris Woods many chances, score 82-30. Playing on the other table Steve Hassack was matched against Alex Nolan and very quickly carried on from last season’s excellent form and gave the visitors the second frame 74-18. The next two frames saw new captain Joe Oliver playing Pete Nolan and previous captain for several years, Graham Hoof playing against Mark Jones. Joe started very well and took a sizeable lead, Pete got back in the game, only to then fail to get out of a couple of snookers and finally lose the frame 28-70.

The match between Graham and Mark was fairly even until Mark found some of his old form and ran out a worthy 63-32 winner. This left the final frame to be played between Danny Bedworth and Grant Heighway and following quite bit of "banter" and tactical play Danny secured an excellent result for the visiting team by taking the frame 65-34 and the match by four games to one.

Second Division

Shifnal F played at home to Coddon C and lost their opening match 3-2, whilst the Coddon A side at home to Bayley B, won their match on a deciding frame. Colin Baugh had a nice 35 break in his game with Mark Wall, that score, 63-35.

Another local derby between Second Club A and their B side, saw the A side win this match 3-2 with L. Giles taking the decider against Tom Firmstone.

Newly promoted Maddocks B got off to a flyer when they played Dawley B at Maddocks. The Maddocks side produced a fine 3-2 win on their debut into this division.

Minnesota A entertained the Bayley D side, and lost 3-2 after being three frames down to the Bayley lads.

Third Division

The new season started where the last one finished as far as Hadley are concerned, with a 4-1 thumping by Anstice B. With a severely depleted team, missing the likes of Kev Whitehead, Al, Roy & Danny Francis, Gary Bray (playing his first competitive match for 13 years!) took on Noel Stones but despite a good start, Noel took the frame 71-24. Andrew Clare (playing in only his 2nd frame of snooker ever!) got comprehensively trounced 74-9 by John Darrock. The next frame saw Gareth Hughes show some sort of fighting spirit, although getting beat 59-47 by Mick Cahill. Tugboat then took on George Hammond but again came unstuck with a 22 - 49 defeat. It was left to Iain Atkinson to give some sort of respect to the score line by defeating Billy Watson 46 -30.

Newport legion started their campaign with a 3-2 win over Maddocks D at Newport.

Comrades A, now playing from Shifnal, recorded a 3-2 win at the expense of Shifnal D, and thanks to the Shifnal club for accommodating the Comrades team, who now have to travel every week until their club re-opens.

Audco C, a new team in this season started with a 3-2 win over LDS C, but unfortunately there is still a bye in this division due to the restructuring of some of the teams in the league.

Due to holidays I have been unable to get the reports out on time, so they will be of smaller content until I catch up. Please keep sending reports, they are a big help.
