After last weeks surprise defeat from Bayley F, the reigning
champions, Minnesota Fats B entertained the Bayley A side.
Minnesota came out with a 4-1 win from this match, with two
of the top players in our league meeting each other in the
third frame. This was Steve Fletcher playing Shawn Harris.
In a high scoring game, this result went to Steve who could
beat anyone on his day. I’m sure he will be pleased
with this win over Shawn, who still remains one of the hardest
players to beat in the league. Having said that, Maxwell Hodson
came very close to beating Ian Duffy, where Ian scraped in
55-52 against the Bayley player.
Shifnal B were cueing very well indeed, and had no problem
in their 5-0 win against the Audco club at Shifnal. This moves
them into second spot, but will they have the impetus to get
to their first league title?
Bayley F seem to pick up against the better teams, and this
week was no exception as they took the current leaders Broseley
A to the wire, with a 3-2 win at the Bayley club. Mick Brezwyn
won the decider against Dave France, but that result still
keeps them four points in front at the top of the table.
Anstice A, in fourth place, had a brilliant win against the
Maddocks A side at Madeley, when they recorded a 4-1 result.
Keith Blackham started the roll with a close victory over
Phil Davies followed by an equally close frame between Neil
Price and Ian Eldridge. That score, 59-47 to Neil. The next
frame, with an high scoring match, saw Steve Camp add a feather
to his cap with a great win over Ian Skelton 6559. Les Stirling
was the next victim for the Anstice club when in another close
frame he got just lost out to Nigel Wallcroft 56-41. Leigh
France was in no danger in the last frame and scored the only
point for the Maddocks side, beating Andy Elliot 72- 15.
Maddocks C were at home to the Little Dawley A side, and
this match win went to the Little Dawley side who won the
match 3-2. The first frame was very close with Ade Henry beating
Mick Wincott 55-53. The next frame saw a rare return for Darren
Pountney who beat Darren Wincott. Joe Oliver also lost in
a scrappy game before Stu Russell had a comfortable win over
Graham Hoof 53-13. In the last game of the evening, Brendon
Wincott took the last frame from Jesse Lowe, 65-28.
Second Division
The battle for honours still continues this week, and with
Coddon A dropping points against Minnesota Fats, in spite
of being the home side, there was an opening for the Coddon
C side, to make some headway. The first frame in a closely
contested match saw Neil Pearson take the opening frame 59-49
from Andy Jones. The next frame, in another high scoring game,
saw Mick Egan lose 76-53 to Mark Wall. Dave Lloyd won the
next quite easily against Anthony Stevenson before Kirk Stevenson
levelled the match by beating Steve Downes 56-33. The final
frame went to Minnesota Fats A when Phil Bufton took the decider
playing Nick Pearce, that score 63-31.
So, Coddon C with all to play for, visited the Bayley B side,
and lo and behold came away with nothing! I’m sure they
will be disappointed with this result, and in fact there was
only one close frame in the match and this was when Jamie
Morris came very near to defeating Mick Francis, but that
frame went to Mick 52-48. It’s been quite a week for
surprise results this week in one way and another!
Maddocks B who have acquitted themselves very well in this
division retuned a 3-2 win over the Second Club A side. The
score lines were very close, but high light of this match
was Doug Morrey’s win over Karl Owen 76-5, where Doug
knocked in a 39 break. Fair play to Doug, I remember Doug
giving me some sound advice on snooker when I first started
to play the game!
The Second Club B meanwhile returned the same result, but
this time in their favour. Second Club were away to the Bayley
D side and came away with a 3-2 win over the Bayley lads.
Little Dawley G and the Shifnal F side have one point between
them after their match at the Dawley club this week. The home
side started by losing the first frame in the closest of games
when John Briscoe beat Tommy Bell 49-48. Chris Petford took
the next to make it 2-0 to Shifnal, before Roy Levenue pulled
one back by beating Fred Harper, 78-65. Rob Withington then
levelled the score to set up the decider between Graham Copson
and Chris Painter, that result was so close with Graham coming
out on top, just! 57-55, to give the match win to the little
Dawley side.
Third Division
The one way traffic in this division still continues with
new side Audco C, gaining yet another 5-0 win at the expense
of Bayley Q and it will be interesting to watch their progress
as they move up a division.
Maddocks D in fourth place were at home to the Shifnal D
side this week, and watched the Shifnal side go into a 3-0
lead, until Cheryl Caswell stopped the rot with a good win
over ex-first division player, Andy Easthope, who is no slouch
at this game. Fair play to Cheryl, she could show a few of
us fellows how to play, and in fact has done so far this season.
That score was 71-29 to Cheryl. Ian Courtney added the last
frame to the Maddocks side with a comfortable win over Arthur
Aston.
Little Dawley C were at home to the Audco B side, and returned
a 4-1 win over the Audco lads. Carl kesterton had a narrow
victory over Chris Hughes 49-47, and it was left to Andy Yates
to take the Audco solitary point in a closely fought match.
51-39.
