TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 12th March 2008

Top of the table in the third division, Audco C played a local derby match with their B side and the result went to the B team 3-2. This was only the third defeat of the season for the C side but it won’t prevent them from going into the second division next season.

With Comrades having a bye this week Anstice B had a good chance of making ground on the Comrades. Anstice played at home to the Maddocks D side and almost got all five points. Stew Wimbush went in off the black in his frame with Roy Lowe, which gave Maddocks their only point of the evening.

Little Dawley C away to the Shifnal D side gained a 3-2 win over Shifnal to go level points with Maddocks D. Gary Walls had a 20 break in his frame, and went on to beat Barrie Easthope, and later in the match Andy Easthope had a 21 and a 30 break against P. Randall to win that frame 76-9. The match went to a decider with L. McDowell beating George Nelson 70-51 to give Little Dawley the 3-2 win.

Bayley Q played the struggling Newport British Legion at the Bayley club, and got a 4-1 result over the legion. Chris Fletcher had a 21 break in his frame but went on to lose 70-35, and he turned out to be the only loser for the Bayley side on the evening. This win keeps Bayley Q mid table.

Finally, Hadley A were away to the little Dawley B side and returned home with a good 3-2 victory over the Little Dawley side who are now just one point above the Hadley lads. This match went to a decider with Iain Atkinson winning the last frame for the Hadley side, in fact, Iain’s’ first win in five games!

First Division

Reigning champions, Minnesota Fats B visited newly promoted Audco A this week, and although coming away with a 4-1 victory, they were given a hard fought match. Richard Jags lost the first frame to Darren Weston, Phil Whitby, making a rare appearance took Shawn Harris to a black ball game in the second frame. Graham Darrell also had a tough match with Simony Yeats which ended in another black ball finish. Ian Duffy was too strong for Mick Hughes and the only consolation of the evening was Alan Turners win over Jamie Fallows.

Little Dawley A lost their match 4-1 to Shifnal at Little Dawley, and remain mid table. Only winner for the little Dawley side was Colin Hales who beat Nigel Stallard 56-39. This win takes Shifnal B into second place behind Broseley, assuming that they have taken some points in their match with Maddocks C.

The Bayley A side are still fighting on, and did their cause no harm this week, when they beat fellow strugglers, Dawley A, 3-2, at the Bayley club. Pete Nolan had a nice 41 break and beat the the very useful Steve Fletcher 73-29. This match went to a decider, and saw Maxwell Hodson do the business beating Grant Heighway 84-38, which could turn out to be a vital point in this match, and leaving these teams just one point apart in the relegation battle.

Maddocks A, who are having an indifferent season this time around, took four out of the five points on offer from the Bayley E side, who are quietly descending down the division. John Squire, the Bayley E’s most prolific winner this season, seems to be fighting a one man battle to keep his side up, and yet again, John was the only winner beating Les Stirling 51-19.

Anstice A, still in fourth place, have had three consecutive 4-1 victories including this weeks 4-1 against Bayley F, at the Bayley club. Andy Elliot had a good 48 break for Anstice in his frame with Darren Willkie, and won that frame 65-31. Only winner for the Bayley side was by Tom Maxfield who beat Keith Blackham 53-11. With just three games to go, Bayley F have it all to do if they are to stay in this division!

Second Division

The two top teams in this division played each other in this weeks fixtures, and it was the Coddon C side who came out with a 3-2 win over their Coddon A side in a local derby. Coddon C struck the first blow with Gary Owen beating Andy Jones before Mark Wall levelled defeating Daniel Ballard. Jamie Morris made it two for the “C” side beating Dave Lloyd 66-40. Steve Downes then won his frame against Laki Badhan to set up the decider between Josh Wall and Nick Pearce. Josh won the decider 55-21 but they remain five points adrift with just three games left to play.

The Second Club A side were away to the Shifnal F side and Second Club are five points behind in third place after this result, which went 3-2 to the Second Club A. this match also went to a decider with a high scoring frame which saw Karl Owen just get the better of Chris Petford 64-60. The Second Club have still got a chance to make headway as they play Coddon C, one match before the end of the season.

Minnesota Fats, A were at home to the little Dawley G side this week, and although winning the first frame courtesy of Neil Pearson beating Gary Clement, that turned out to be the only win of the evening for Minnesota Fats A.

Maddocks B who have settled well in this division, and are mid table, were at home to the Bayley D team. Les Hicks still knocking them in well, had a 28 break in his match with Darren Rhodes but Les and Doug Morrey were the only winners for the Maddocks B side this week, final result 3-2 to Bayley D.

Foot Note

I have been quite lenient with the fines for late posting of cards this season, and unfortunately, even allowing for our poor postal system, several clubs seem to be disinterested in getting results through to me. I will accept emails for the results, but at the next meeting I will try to introduce a new system for penalties for late cards. At this time of the season, it is quite important for teams to know how they are placed in their respective divisions.
