TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 13th February 2008

I have to start the report this week with a little poem sent to me from Mike Healey. In his words, he might give up snooker to concentrate on poetry! The poem was borne out of the Shifnal B v Bayley F match which went 5-0 to Shifnal.

WHAT A NIGHT OF SNOOKER?

After a warning at the club before we departed
Against Matt Davies win the toss to get started
We three pals tossed to see who should play first
Fortunately it was Pete that lost and was cursed
He was to meet Matt and won the toss
Perhaps that was where he made the loss
Breaking and leaving next to nothing loose to pot
Following his opponents shot he couldn’t see a lot
Giving the cue ball his usual gung-ho fling
The pack it broke not appearing to leave a thing
The crowd were amused by this type of shot
Often see it though when he’s in a tight spot
After a moment or two of study and thought
His opponent got a red in the pocket caught
Following this with a black another red then pink
This was when Pete started to wonder and think
Was this some conniving plot by his mate?
Landing him in this terrible statuesque state
Soon he’d get his chance to show his mettle
If he could get on the table for his cue to settle
At least he can’t get a maximum he was sure
But his opponent carried on piling up the score
After a few more reds and colours he started to ask
How many snookers do I need to overcome this task?
Quite a few his pals tell him with a bit of a smile
You’re doing fine but behind by a country mile
Steadily the score carries on up to the magic ton
He realises this is another game he hasn’t won
The ton is greeted with a good round of applause
It’s now just a case of how many points he scores
Patiently waiting with a smile on his face
After all losing to play like this is no disgrace
At least into the team once he came and tried
Only having two shots he very nearly cried
For Telford Snooker League 137 was the record
With all the colours potted the crowd applaud
It’s been a pleasure for all who watched and saw
Matt Davies 138 to nil for Pete, as the final score
Remembering how last time that he was here
Pete on his reappearance had got a big cheer
We had discovered him trapped by the toilet door
How he wished the same had happened once more
Having played his best and lost to a break of 138
He’d helped his opponent to feel really great
No one now can ever say that he didn’t try
He’d no chance to give it the Woodcock Eye
Now we worry about his forthcoming cruise
He may jump overboard cos he hates to lose

Mike took a lot of trouble to do this and I thought everyone would appreciate the humour, and of course, that break!

Audco A took on the league leaders, Broseley, at Broseley this week and gave them a good run for their money. Broseley went into a 2-0 lead but Audco won the next two with a cracking performance from Mick Hughes, and an equally fine frame between Graeme Long and Andy Kendrick. In the last frame playing for the decider Graham Darrell was very unlucky to lose to Mick Brezwyn.

This win keeps Broseley in front by three points as the Minnesota B entertained the Maddocks A side. The Maddocks team started well with Ian Eldridge back to form and beating Darren Weston 72-65. The next three frames saw Minnesota Fats regain the lead but Leigh France took the last frame off Simon Yeats 71-53. A very close match overall, 3-2 to Minnesota B.

Maddocks C have done really well in their debut into the first division this season and they took on Bayley A who are struggling a bit this season. This result went 3-2 to the Maddocks C team.

Roles seem to have been reversed in this next fixture as Bayley E who started so well earlier in the season have lost their way, and Little Dawley A are going from strength to strength. This week the little Dawley side took all five points from the Bayley E team at the Bayley club.

Dawley A have found some form recently and they gained a 4-1 win at home when they played the Anstice A side. This win will certainly be welcomed in their bid to stay in this division, and gives them a three point cushion over Bayley A.

Second Division

Coddon A still maintain their winning form and this week was no different as they took on Maddocks B at Donnington. This match went to the wire with Nick Pearce who is playing well for the Coddon lads taking the deciding frame against John Archer to win the match 3-2. The Maddocks side will be well pleased with their fourth place in this division after their promotion last season.

Coddon C were a few yards away to the Second Cub B side and they had a fine 4-1 win over the Second Club which sees them take another point off Coddons overall lead. Exciting times for these two Coddon teams at the moment!

Second Club A were away to Little Dawley G and will probably be a bit disappointed to take just two points from this match. This match also ended on a deciding frame with Graham Copson beating Karl Owen in the last frame 53-36.

The Bayley B team were at home to Shifnal F and went into a 2-0 lead with Kev West having a 32 break when he beat Fred Harper 71-2. In the second frame. Dan Oliver nearly made it three for the Bayley lads but just lost to Roy Martin 53-52. Chris Painter levelled the scores with a 61-6 victory over Dickie Oliver but Richard Bedall won the match by beating Chris Petford 52-26 in the final frame. 3-2 to Bayley B.

Bayley D, sailing close to the wind, recorded a much needed 4-1 win over the Dawley B side at the Bayley club. Craig Whitehead has returned of late and is putting a few points on the board for the Bayley D side, and he won again this week with a 58-17 win over Ray Clements. Dave Williams had a 23 break in his win over Alex Jones.

Third Division

Audco C retain their dominant lead in this division this week, and they had a 4-1 win over the visiting Comrades A side. It was the last frame of the evening before Chris Crook took a point for the Comrades when he defeated Roger Lewis in a close game, 45-32.

Anstice B were at home to the Audco B side and John Darrock took the first frame 54-43 in spite of a 23 break from his opponent Chris Hughes. In fact Anstice went three up before two ex. Wellington lads won their respective games, Alex Turnbull beating George Hammond and Andy Yates beating Steve Smallwood. 3-2 to Anstice B.

Maddocks D, chasing the leaders, were at home to the Bayley Q side and did their cause no harm with a good 4-1 win over the Bayley Q side. Only winner for the Bayley lads was Steven Weatherall who had a nice 31 break in his win over Ian Courtney.
