My thanks to Jimmy Hill for compiling the snooker report
while I was on holiday.
This week in the first division, Minnesota Fats B increased
their lead by another point over the Broseley team when they
were playing away to the Bayley A side. Minnesota took all
five games starting with Sean Harris beating Arthur Burrows
in the first frame 57-31. Next up, Bob Mason found Simon Yeats
too strong and lost 49-27. The third frame saw Darren Weston
in action against Spencer Rowley and Darren made a nice 65
break effectively securing that frame. So, three up to Minnesota,
and their good form carried on when Keith Price also knocked
in a 35 against M. Hodson to win that one 69-19. Steve Fletcher
then stepped into the breech to try and avoid the whitewash,
but he came up against the formidable Ian Duffy who went on
to complete the rout beating Steve 81-12.
Broseley were also away to the Dawley A side and managed
a 4-1 win. Sean Nolan took the first and only frame for Dawley
beating John Banks 61-33. Mark Jones put up a good fight against
Carl Walker, but Carl took this frame 59-42. The next two
frames looked completely one sided as Mick Brezwyn won his
game against Pete Nolan 71-1. Followed by Simon Thomas who
had two breaks during his game with Grant Heighway, one of
52 and the second of 24, that scoreline 84-1. In a high scoring
game the last match must have been a thriller with Graham
Long just getting over the line playing Rick Bailey, 68-65.
With the Anstice D result missing Maddocks A move into third
spot after their 4-1 win over Anstice C. Maddocks, playing
with home advantage opened with Phil Davis who now seems to
have got his act together. His 58-13 win over Chris Woods
set the ball rolling and gave Maddocks their first point of
the evening. Ian Skelton was too strong for Frank Williams
and recorded a score of 73-5. Les Stirling for Maddocks then
came up against Steve Camp, and it was Steve who came out
the winner of this one, outplaying Les for a 66-31 victory.
Dave France played very little safety and got in with a nice
38 break to win his frame against Darren Wilkie 71-14 and
taking the third point of the evening for Maddocks. Last up,
Leigh France was well in front and after a twitch in the middle
of the frame John Jones found he could have won had he just
managed too get a snooker on the blue ball, but in the end
it was Leigh who triumphed 77-45.
Shifnal B at home to Bayley E saw Matt Davies, the usual
opening bat! compile a 64 break to get his side off to a good
start and beating Andy O’Brien 64-24. Aaron Sparkes
then lost to Steve Hoof on the black 49-47 to level the scores.
Ali Jones for the Bayley side then took the lead as he beat
Rob Wright 67-35. Dave Peplow then came back with a solid
display to beat Dave France 55-25. The last frame saw (Mr.
Mcgoo) Nigel Stallard playing to win the decider, and this
he did with a 62-32 victory over John Squires.
Second Division
In second division, leaders Maddocks C maintain their good
form and this report courtesy of Jim hill.
Leaders of Division Two, Maddocks C took the short journey
to third placed Coddon C and returned with an emphatic 5-0
win. Daz Wincott was first up against home man Daniel Ballard
and produced a fine display of potting to seal the frame including
a 29 break. Josh Wall then tried hard to level the match against
Danny Bedworth. In a close finish Danny potted a good pink
and black to snatch the game for the Oakengates side. Joe
Oliver continued his good form against Ray Whitehead and,
after hitting his head on the light shade, made it 3-0. Matt
Bothwell took on Steve Hassack in the forth frame and nearly
inflicted the ironmans first defeat, but after Matt went in
off the blue, Steve potted a good pink to win. Finally Jimmy
Hill took on the young Mark Tusel and produced his best display
this year to give Maddocks their third whitewash of the season
and look good for a swift return to the top flight.
Audco A chasing Maddocks C could only return a 3-2 loss when
they played Coddon B. In spite of winning the first two frames
Coddon B came back strongly to take the last three frames.
Mick Hughes and Andy Jones had a fine match with Mick losing
on the black ball.
Audco A are just four points in front of the Second Club
Trench A side, who this week gained a good 4-1 away win at
LDS G. The first frame couldn’t have been closer with
G. Arnold from Trench edging out T. Bell to gain the first
point, 38-37. Next up saw our two regular attendees of the
meetings paired, and Ian Ferriday won his game against Rob
Withington 43-26. So, two up, but then G. Wiley took one back
for the home side with a comfortable 57-15 score line over
J. Williams. L. Giles then got the third point for Second
Club in a close game with G. Copson, that score, 65-51. Last
up saw K. Owen beating R. Levenue 71-20 and gaining some ground
on the Audco A side.
The other Trench team Second Club B had home advantage when
they played Bayley B, but only managed to take two points
from the match. Toby Welsh struck first for Second Club taking
the frame 44-15 against K. Mcloud before K. West levelled
47-34 playing Paul Crooks. Tom Firmstone then regained the
advantage for second club in a close game with Dan Oliver
but coming out the winner 53-42. Dave Welsh then lost to Richard
Bedall 59-43 setting up the decider between Neil Robinson
and Dick Oliver. Dick Oliver took the last frame giving the
Bayley B-side the victory, and keeping them breathing down
the necks of Second Club A, one point behind in fourth place.
Minnesota G, at home to the Bayley D side lost the first
game when Dave Dudley beat James Price 49-37. Min G recovered
to take the next two frames with Tony Marsh beating Dave Williams
55-27 and then Craig Davies beating Mark Bedall 58-17. Wayne
Weeks secured the match for Min G after his victory over Brian
Aberdeen, before Craig Whitehead took the last frame for Bayley
D with a score line of 63-21 over Nick Turner.
Third Division
Bayley Q suffered a 4-1 defeat at home this week when they
met leaders Dawley B. Paul Harper gained the first point for
Dawley when he played Chris Durham and winning that frame
with a score of 50-19. Chris Fletcher than lost to Paddy McDowell
52-27 before Rob Cook pulled a frame back beating Barry Roden
51-30. Steve Weatherall lost the next frame to Kev Jones 56-35,
and finally Chris Bates also lost 49-12 to Alex Jones giving
the Dawley side a good 4-1 win.
Shifnal D are in third place, but that is without the Anstice
B result, which hasn’t arrived. Shifnal D were away
to Maddocks D and took the first two games with T. Askew gaining
victory over Fred Spragg 68-45 followed by S. Chauhan beating
Rob Lowe 58-16. Ken Davies briefly stopped the rot by overcoming
Peter Wharton 58-34, but in the next game Tony O’Neil
lost to A. Aston 52-42. The last game although a close affair
saw B. Easthope make it four points for Shifnal beating Mick
Wainwright.
Newport British Legion gave Hadley A the whitewash with a
resounding 5-0 victory leaving Hadley stranded at the bottom
of the division. Allan Davies got the first point playing
Gareth Hughes winning 61-27, then the usually strongest player
for Hadley, Kevin Whitehead lost to Keith Gardener 42-32.
Richard Goldie then beat reserve John Thornhill 67-35 to make
it three nil. Nigel Simpson took the next frame 57-25 against
G, Bowen before John Yapp completed the 5-0 beating “Tugboat”
R. Benting 51-26.
Audco B are catching up with their fixtures and they were
at home this week and gained a 3-2 win over LDS C. C. Hughes
notched up the first point for Audco against Carl Kesterton
41-17, but then Chris Niblett pulled one back for LDS beating
G. Groucott 73-36. LDS c then took the lead with Sam Hamilton
returning a score line of 61-41 in his game with P. Smyth.
Then the first of my old teams mates, Andy Yates came up against
Shane Knight and won that 54-37, with Alex Turnball winning
the final game and match for Audco B beating Pete Randall
54-44.
Finally Comrades A sitting in mid table with a game in hand,
scored a good win over the experienced Maddocks B. R. Davies
opened up the scoring for Comrades, who were at home, by taking
the first frame 45-23 against S. Pritchard. S. Preece then
met campaigner Les Hicks who still playing solid snooker took
the only point for Maddocks B winning that game 52-26. S.
Jones beat Wally Harper 60-34 before C. Crook added another
point beating Doug Morrey 57-43. In the final frame M. Jones
beat M. Colley 54-18.
