TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 15th November 2006

Leaders of the second division, Maddocks C, hosted a spirited 2nd Club B side and only just managed a 3-2 win. All started well for the home side with Steve Hassack maintaining his 100% record by beating Bob Lane 63-22 but the Trench side soon pulled back with a solid display from Paul Crooks against skipper Graham Hoof 7-62. Home man Joe Oliver never really had a look in with a superb display from Tom Firmstone and the Trench man took a well deserved win and put his team ahead, 13-70. Jimmy Hill then managed to pot the important balls to take the match into a decider by beating Toby Welsh 53-23. In the final frame the away team skipper, Neil Robinson, took on Daz Wincott but found the Ironman in great potting form and watched him seal the win for Maddocks C 73-27.

Meanwhile, Audco were away to the Second club A side, and may I say what a friendly welcome club this is! The first frame began with two long serving members of the Telford snooker league, when Ian Ferriday played Alan Turner. A good game this, Ian with his usual potting ferocity, and Alan trying to peg him back. When it came down to the colours Alan had potted brown blue and pink to gain a chance of winning the frame, but after taking on a difficult black and missing it, Ian duly popped it in, and there went Alan’s unbeaten record.

Next to play was Graham Arnold who met Andy Kendrick. Graham started with some fabulous pots but in the end had to watch “Kenny” play some great shots and take the second frame. Andy Phelan for Audco was never at the races, and captain Keith Mears took that frame. Young John Williams proved far too good for Mick Hughes, and so Audco went 3-1 down. In the last frame we were treated to vintage Graham Darral who potted really well and compiled a 37 break on his way to victory. This match saw Second club move one point closer to Audco who still remain second in the division.

Bayley B won their match 3-2 when they played Minnesota Fats G at the Bayley club. K. West opened the match and beat James Price to take the first game before Craig Davies levelled for Min G by defeating Dan Oliver. Richard Bedall then restored the lead for the Bayley side beating Wayne Weeks. The match was then levelled again when Tony Marsh beat C. Baugh. So the decider to play, and Dick Oliver played my namesake, Nick Turner, and won the match for the Bayley to keep them in touch with the leaders.

Minnesota Fats A, with their missing result in, made a giant leap this week after a 4-1 win against LDS. G at Minnesota Fats. The only winner for LDS G came from T. Bell who ran out a comfortable winner over Mick Egan. This result, coupled with the missing result, puts Minnesota Fats A well in contention in fifth place.

Coddon B were involved in a local derby match with their C team, and managed to do the business with a 3-2 result. After four frames the scores were level and the decider was played by Dave Lloyd, ex first division player, against Frazier McKinnon. Dave played very well against us last week and hasn’t lost much form, and came good again in this match, which he won to give Coddon B the 3-2 win.

Bayley D were at home to Shifnal F and won this encounter 3-2 which means three teams are tied on 19 points. Dave Dudley won the first playing Gary Love followed by his teammate, Craig Whitehead, who is playing very well this season so far, beating Simon Dyal. The impetus was broken when Chris Painter in the third frame pulled one back for Shifnal when he beat Mark Bedall. Dave Williams then regained the advantage for the Bayley club before Fred Harper stepped into the breech to capture the last game for Shifnal to give a respectable score line to the match

Third Division

Anstice B still lead this division and looked set for a 4-1 victory until S. Jones came back from 31 points behind to win his match on the black against John Darrock including a 24 break. Noel Stones retains his unbeaten record with eight wins out of eight.

Bayley Q gained a valuable win at the expense of Maddocks B who had the home advantage. Les Hicks won the opening frame against Steve Weatherall in a tight game, and fair play to Les, has only lost one game this season to date. This match also went to a decider, and Rich Tranter snatched the match for the Bayley side by beating Steve Pritchard in the last game of the evening.

Dawley B are now in second place, and they maintained their newly found form by winning their match with the Audco B side. Another deciding match yet again when Alex Jones came up against Alex Turnbull, and in a very closely contested game Alex Jones just came out the winner for Dawley B at Dawley. Thanks to Audco B who are catching up with the fixtures after taking the place of the bye.

First Division

With only four results in from this week, Minnesota Fats B are still in control of the first division after defeating Dawley A 4-1. Pete Nolan from Dawley narrowly beat Simon Yeats to take the only point for Dawley, and fair play to Pete, he is collecting a few scalps in this seasons campaign.

Bayley F are one point behind Broseley with the Broseley missing one result. Fair play to the Bayley F side when in another local derby match they met up with their Bayley E side. Richie Hulme got them off to a good start winning the first game before Tom Maxfield won the next playing Steve Hoof. Eddie Whithead then made it three before M. Francis took one back for the Bayley E side when he beat Paul Maxfield. Az Khan, who doesn’t command a regular place in the team then made it four when he beat Dave France.

The Little Dawley band wagon is well and truly rolling with another impressive performance against Shifnal B. The home side started well, A. Henry taking on Matt Davies and coming out victorious with some great potting throughout the match. In the next Byron Mitchell took on Rob Wright, fresh from his visit to the dentist today. Byron potted well yet again for the home side, and it was probably less painful for Rob in the dentists chair as Byron made it two nil to the little dawley lads. In the third it was youth versus maturity, with Jesse Lowe taking on Aaron Sparkes, and in a match of high scoring, in which both players played well, it was Jesse who cleared the remaining colours to seal the win for himself, and the match for the home side. With only pride left to play for, the two captains took each other on, with Lee Elcock going into an early lead, but Nigel Stallard fought back well, and it remained tight going into the last three colours. Nigel held his nerve to clear them all and pull a frame back, and in the last Stuart Russell took on Dave "the rock" Peplow, fresh from his trebles win, but Stuart was in no mood to let Shifnal take another frame, potting solidly throughout the match and not leaving Dave many opportunities to seal a fine 4-1 win over the Shifnal side.

Finally, Bayley A, away to Anstice C continue to struggle and remain at the bottom of the division. After the wait to get back into the first flight it’s beginning to look like a struggle for the Bayley A side to stay there. Bayley A did manage to take two points from this match and may well be heartened with this result.
