No result in from Broseley yet again this week, but the
leaders Min Fats B are still in pole position after visiting
Dawley social club where they managed to turn a 2-0 deficit
into a 3-2 win. Dawley started well with Rick Bailey back
to form, seeing off Darren Weston 70-29, and enjoying a 34
break on the way. Sean Nolan made it 2-0 beating Shawn Harris
62-27. It looked like going 3-0 to Dawley, until Keith Price
with a 35 clearance won by 57 points to Pete Nolans' 53. Simon
Yeates continued the comeback against Grant Heighway, and
finally, Ian Duffy won the decider comfortably, playing Mark
Jones.
Shifnal A popped down the road to play Maddocks A, but only
managed to get one point there. Ian Skelton won a scrappy
frame with Lindsay Knox, followed by Phil Davis playing shots
that Neil hadn’t thought about, and with some run of
the ball Phil made it 2-0 to Maddocks. Leigh France also had
a scrappy frame, and with Angus Way being off form, Leigh
added the third point of the evening. Les Stirling outplayed
Simon Biddulph and a full house was on the cards for Maddocks,
however, John Fallows played well, and after Dave France made
a bad shot on the brown, John gained the solitary point of
the evening for the Shifnal side.
In a local derby match between Bayley F and Bayley E, the
“F” side beat their rivals 3-2. Eddie Whitehead
got the Bayley F side their first point, beating Andy O’Brien,
and knocking in a 39 during the process. Az Khan made it 2-0
beating Steve Hoof before Ali Jones clawed one back by beating
Tom Maxfield. John Squires levelled the match after his game
with Paul Maxfield to set up the decider between Richie Hulme
and Dave France. This looked a one-way affair with the score
line being 69-2 in favour of Richie Hulme.
Bayley A were at home to Anstice C and lost that match 3-2.
Darren Wilkie for the Anstice side had a 48 break to give
him a comfortable win over Arthur Burrows, followed by another
win for Anstice, this time John Jones beating Bob Mason. Steve
Camp made it three for the Madeley lads, but then, up steps
Steve Fletcher and banged in a 65 break in his victory over
Frank Williams, also getting in on the highest break sheet
which surprisingly enough, hasn’t happened earlier in
the season. Chris Morgan-Adams took the second point for the
Bayley A side in a narrow win over Chris Woods, 54-52.
Let’s hope that we can accommodate the fixtures for
the six Bayley sides next season if the proposal for removing
one of the tables goes ahead!
Second Division
Leaders Maddocks C managed to overcome a poor run of form
to bounce back with a win over 2nd Club B 4-1 and maintain
their push for the title.
The evening started well for the Oakengates side with Joe
Oliver playing another solid game against Neil Robinson, taking
the frame with a great Brown ball, 38-61. Next up was an interesting
contest between Paul Crooks and Steve Hassack. Both men went
for potting before safety and it was the away man that maintained
his great season to win 46-61, but considering Paul gave 33
away in fouls all could have been different. Bob Lane played
a controlled game against new “Granddad” Graham
Hoof, to pull a frame back for the home side, 55-15. Toby
Welsh started his frame with Jimmy Hill on fire and took a
34-point lead with only his forth visit to the baize. The
Ironman managed to keep up with the pace, and took the match
on the brown in a great frame, 42-79. Last up was “Daddy”
Dave Welsh against Daz Wincott. The match started close but
the Maddocks man soon took control and hit a season best break
of 45 to finish off a great night for the leaders, 10-75.
With only 3 games left this season, Maddocks C look to have
a commanding position at the top of the league but need to
keep looking over their shoulders at the chasing pack.
Audco A will be well pleased with their 3-2 win over Second
Club A at Newport. In a tough match, which opened with Andy
Kendrick getting the first point under the belt playing Ian
Ferriday, who never hit his true form on the evening, this
result was much needed. The luckless Andy Phelan did everything
he could to win this frame, and started very well getting
a good start for himself, but then, taking nothing away from
Les Giles who played well to keep on terms, saw the game slip
away on the black. In the next frame with all the balls glued
to the cushions Alan Turner and Graham Arnold made slow headway
to reach the end of this frame. Some very good safety on the
final colours but a fluke for Graham on the pink put paid
to Alans' chance. Mick Hughes was a little surprised to come
back and win the next frame against Keith Mears, but comeback
he did and won on the final black. Graham Darrall, playing
well of late took the final deciding frame by beating Keith
Owen.
Another derby match saw Coddon C beat their Coddon B team
3-2 to make it an exciting finish, for what looks like being
second place honours. Daniel Ballard took the first frame
for Coddon C beating Andy Jones and then Ray Whitehead came
up against Dave Lloyd, who proved too strong for Ray and levelled
the match. Matt Bothwell restored the lead defeating Mark
Wall before Steve Downes redressed the balance by beating
young Josh Wall. In the decider, Frazier McKinnon, who has
played particularly well the latter half of the season, won
the match for The Coddon C team when he beat Dave Holmes.
Min Fats G may have left themselves a bit much to do with
only three games of the season left, and meeting the leaders
next week! Min G gained a 3-2 win at home when they played
the Bayley Club B. Home player Nick Turner lost the opener
to Kev West but Nicks team-mate, James Price, then beat Craig
Baugh to even things up. The next frame saw Craig Davies getting
the better of Dan Oliver by one point, 39-38. Richard Bedall
then won his frame with Tony Marsh to set up the deciding
frame with Aaron O’Donnell and Kevin Mcloud. Aaron won
this frame, and the match with a convincing score line 69-7.
LDS G, fighting to stay up entertained the other side in
the mix for relegation, Min Fats A. This match went to LDS
G. Graham Copson opened with a victory for Min Fats over Mick
Egan, with Rob Whithington losing out on the black in the
next frame with Kirk Stevenson. Roy Levenue got LDS G back
in front with a win over Mick Pearson before Graham Wiley
secured the match for LDS G when he beat Phil Bufton. Another
point for LDS G would have been welcomed, but in a closely
fought frame, Neil Pearson got the better of Tommy Bell, 56-53.
Third Division
Dawley B, leaders of this division are not faltering as they
head for the title. Dawley had to visit Newport side Audco
B and put up a good display to win the match. The first frame
was as close as it gets with Chris Hughes beating Ian Ward
51-49 to put Audco in front. Kev Jones for Dawley made it
1-1 defeating Graham Groucott, before Barry Roden also in
a close game beat Andy Yates 52-38. Yet another close finish
saw Alex Turnbull beat Colin Thorpe to set up the deciding
frame between Pete Smith and Alex Jones. Alex won this match
50-37 to keep the Dawley sides promotion bid on track.
Close rivals Anstice B, may well be looking over their shoulder
now as they lost 4-1 when they visited the Comrades A side
in Bridgnorth. Comrades took the match by winning the first
four frames. S. Jones started by beating John Darrock. C.
Crook made it 2-0 with a comprehensive win over Darren Shaw,
69-3. Closest game of the evening next, with M. Wordsell beating
Mick Cahill in a very low scoring game, 26-18. C. Bristow
piled more pressure on the Anstice lads, making it 4-0, with
Billy Watson becoming the fourth victim. Noels Stones for
Anstice stopped the whitewash with a comfortable win over
S. Preece.
Maddocks B, on a roll recently, have given themselves a fine
chance of making it into the next flight if they can continue
this form. Maddocks were away to Bayley Q and came back with
a 3-2 win. Wally Harper got Maddocks off to a winning start
beating Chris bates 71-42, with Chris Fletcher inflicting
defeat on Les Hicks 48-46. Rob Cook then gave Bayley a 2-1
lead beating Martin Colley before John Archer set up a decider
by beating Richard Tranter. Doug Morrey made sure of the victory
for Maddocks with a score line of 75-33 in his favour, playing
Steven Weatherall.
LDS B were at home to the Hadley A side who are propping
up the division, but are obviously concentrating on cup success.
My usual author for the Hadley report was too affected by
his recent win to make this weeks contribution, but hopefully,
the bard will return next week? Phil Cottey played Gareth
Hughes in the opening frame and Phil won this game to give
LDS B first blood. Kev Whitehead for Hadley took the next,
with Colin Gittus then defeating Al Francis 62-16. Pete Clarke
then played substitute Dan Francis, and that frame gave LDS
B the match win, as Pete ended up a 62-36 point winner over
Dan. In the last frame of the evening Iain Atkinson got the
better of Simon Evans 51-40 to make it a respectable result
for the Hadley boys.
Finally Maddocks D gained a good 5-0 win over LDS C at the
Maddocks club. Ken Davies got the first point on the board
for Maddocks beating S. Hamilton with Roy Lowe adding the
second playing G. Walls, and Roy having a 27 break during
the frame. Next up Ian Courtney saw off C. Kesterton with
Fred Spragg taking frame number four defeating P. Randell.
Mick Wainwright Jnr. completed the rout with a 60-9 win over
A. Garbett.
