Minnesota B were at home to Bayley A this week and nearly
made a clean sweep. Darren Weston opened the batting against
Spencer Rowley and Darren was in fine form as he knocked in
a 52 break when he won the first frame. Keith Price added
a second for Min. B beating Bob Mason before Shaun Harris
put paid to Steve Fletcher. Bayley A did gain a point in the
next frame courtesy of Chris Morgan-Adams who beat Simon Yeats
59-58. Ian Duffy secured the last point to make it 4-1 to
Minnesota B.
Time is running out for Broseley A as the Min. B. side keep
the pressure on at the top of the division. Broseley A were
at home to struggling Dawley A and managed a 4-1 win over
the Dawley side Simon Thomas got Broseley one up beating Sean
Nolan but in a close frame next, Rick Bailey produced a fine
performance by beating Graeme Long. That was the only hic-cup
for Broseley as they took the next three frames to get the
4-1 result.
Shifnal A were 4-1 winners at home to Bayley F with Tom Maxfield
getting the away side off to a good start when he took the
opening frame marginally against Andy Easthope 55-52. Neil
Price easily beat Azear Khan and in the next match Angus Way,
with a 49 break, beat Richie Hulme 75-51. This frame must
have been quite short as Richie also had a 41 break during
the game. Lindsay Knox beat Paul Maxfield and the last game
between John Fallows and Eddie Whitehead looked to be a black
ball finish, 50-38, with the win going to John Fallows.
LDS A are maintaining their form and this week was no different
when the Anstice D side visited them. Jesse Lowe opened for
the Little Dawley side and notched up the first point in a
close game with Laki Badhan. Nigel Wallcroft had an easy win
over Stewart Gwilliam with the next frame being a black ball
game with Stewart Russell just bettering Andy Elliot 55-53.
The last two games were comfortable wins for Colin Hales over
Mick Musgrave and Byron Mitchell against S. Collins.
Maddocks A made the trip to Madeley and secured a 4-1 result.
Maddocks took the first two frames courtesy of Phil Davies
and Ian Skelton before Steve camp got one back for the home
side. However, that was the only point of the evening for
Anstice as Leigh France and Les Stirling had comfortable wins
over Frank Williams and Chris Woods.
Bayley E were at home to Shifnal B with home player, Andy.
O’Brien losing the first frame to Aaron Sparkes 52-24.
Steve Hoof made it one apiece as he beat Rob Wright, then
Matt Davies for Shifnal, tipped the balance in favour of Shifnal
when he beat Andy. Jones. The match then swung the other way
as John Squire got the better of Dave Peplow, leaving Dave
France and Nigel Stallard to play the decider. Unlike last
week, Nigel Stallard lost this decider and Dave France won
the game and match for Bayley E 3-2.
Second Division
After a poor showing against Audco last week, leaders Maddocks
C suffered a shock defeat at home to Coddon C. Danny Bedworth
started the match off but found Danny Ballard in great form
and the Trench man continued his good season with another
win, 29-63. Jimmy Hill soon levelled the match with a second
victory this season over young Mark Tusel, 72-27. Darren Wincott
started his frame well against Josh Wall, but the Coddon lad
managed to keep in touch. All went to the black and Josh managed
to pot the away side back in front and avoided a “slap”
from his Dad (Mark plays for the chasing Coddon B side), 39-48.
Steve Hassack produced one of his best performances and gave
gentleman Matt Bothwell little chance with some controlled
snooker to leave himself top of the “most wins table”,
82-13. The deciding frame was between Joe Oliver and Fraser
Mackinnon and it was the away man who took the advantage with
a little bit of Scottish luck. Joe fought back well before
Fraser fluked a snooker and the home man could not recover,
23-57. This gave Coddon C a great result and leaves the leaders
looking over their shoulders.
Joint second in the table saw Coddon B playing Audco A, where
Audco always seem to struggle. This occasion was no different
as the first frame saw Andy Kendrick take on Mark Wall. A
scrappy game where neither player seemed to get to grips with
the table, saw Mark beat Andy on the black. Meanwhile on the
adjacent table, Audco player Andy Phelan was never at the
races and shook Andy Jones hand before getting to the colours.
Steve Downes potted the balls off the lampshades and Mick
Hughes did all he could to keep up, but unfortunately with
just four colours left on the table Mick knocked the black
in with the brown ball, and left the his opponent the easy
brown and a comfortable win.
So all downhill for Audco but in the next frame Alan Turner
and Dave Lloyd enjoyed a competitive and highly entertaining
frame. Good potting and great safety from both players saw
Dave wanting snooker on the blue to draw. This he duly got
with Alan hitting the pink to give Dave a chance to win the
frame. Alan then got a snooker back witch gave him enough
impetus to go on and win the frame. In the last frame Dave
Holmes played Graham Darral, who has been playing well of
late, and although Dave put up a good performance Graham potted
well again this week, and took the second frame for Audco
and salvaging what could have been a disastrous evening for
Audco. So four games left and one point between second and
third!
Second Club A revived their fortunes again this week when
they recorded their second match win in a row with a 3-2 victory
over LDS G. How different Second Clubs position might have
been without the two five nil defeats they suffered recently!
Ian Ferriday started the match and in a high scoring game
with R. Levenue just won that frame 61-60. K. Owen lost the
next frame to T. Bell and then LDS G took the lead when Graham
Wiley beat L. Giles. Graham Arnold restored the balance with
a victory over Graham Copson, and in the last Keith Mears
beat Rob Withington 46-30 to make it 3-2 to the Seconds Club.
Bayley B were at home to the Second Club B and started well
enough with Kev West making a 29 break in his win over Neil
Robinson 68-32. A close game next when Paul Crooks returned
a score line of 63 to Craig Baugh’s 56 to level the
match. Robin Clarke made his second appearance of the season
and played Tom Firmstone. Unfortunately this time Robin was
on the losing end as Tom won this frame 54-20. Second club
gained another point via Toby Welsh getting the better of
Dickie Bedall before Danny Oliver secured the second point
of the evening for the Bayley side with a 54-41 win over Mike
Thompson.
Bayley D with home advantage lost their match 3-2 to MIN.
G. the usual opener, Dave Dudley lost to Nick Turner with
Nicks teammate getting the second when he beat Darren Rhodes.
Back in the side after some time, Craig Whitehead made a welcome
return for hid side as he pulled one back defeating Tony Marsh.
Dave Williams levelled the match by beating Wayne weeks and
the Bayley looked to be heading for the match win until suddenly
Aaron O’Donnell produced a fine 34 clearance to beat
Jim Lewis 65-59.
Minnesota Fats A could make no headway up the table this
week as they played one of the other teams struggling for
survival in this division. Although Minnesota had home advantage
to the Shifnal F side they suffered a 4-1 defeat. Minnesota
lost the first three opening frames with Dave Chapman winning
the first against Mick Pearson. Phil Edwards made it two for
Shifnal with Mick Egan losing that one. The third frame was
close but Chris Painter added another point to Shifnals tally
beating Phil Bufton 61-51. Kirk Stevenson briefly started
a comeback with what looked like an easy win over Fred Harper
but then John Briscoe for Shifnal made it the 4-1 defeating
Neil Robinson.
Third Division
Dawley B at home to the Bayley Q side will take some stopping
after another 4-1 win giving them a five-point lead at the
top of the division. Paul Harper returned to the side this
week and got the Dawley side of to a good start with an easy
victory over Rob Cook. That was carried on by Ian Wards win
over Chris Durham. Kev Jones made it 3-0 beating Steve Weatherall
with Barry Roden following suit in his game with Richard Tranter.
Chris Bates stopped the whitewash as he beat Alex Jones in
the final frame.
Anstice B, after last weeks shock result to curry and beer
specialists, Hadley A, got back on the winning trail at home
to LDS B. Looked a good match this as Noel Stones, usually
very dependable in this division suffered his second defeat
in a row when Phil Cottey took the first frame 74-26, and
Phil enjoying a 30 break during the frame. Dave Shaw then
pulled one back for Anstice beating Pete Clarke 66-29. John
Darrock was next up and also had a break of 26 when he beat
his namesake Snowy Darrock 49-20. So, two up, but it looked
like everyone wanted to be mentioned in despatches this week
as Mick Cahill produced a 30 break and going on to victory
against Colin Gittus, that score line 69-45 to Mick. That
wasn’t to be the end of the entertainment though as
in a good finish to the evening, Billy Watson and Simon Evans
had to contest this frame with a respotted black. Simon sank
that to get the second point for LDS B
Maddocks B are making a rapid climb up the table and produced
a fine 4-1 result when they welcomed Comrades A to their club.
Wally Harper opened the first frame and won comfortably enough
beating Mark Wordsell 62-34. Les Hicks had a 22 break as he
took the second point for Maddocks gaining a 71-34 victory
over S. Jones. Doug Morrey wasn’t to be outdone in the
next, and went one better with a 27 break, which helped him
over the line playing C. Bristow. C. Crook in a very close
game got the only point of the evening as he beat S. Pritchard
55-48. John Archer put the icing on the cake for Maddocks
making it 4-1 with a win over M. Jones, and Maddocks may well
be thinking, are there enough games left for us. Makes for
an exciting finish to the season!
Shifnal D was visited by Maddocks D but even with home advantage
watched the Maddocks side take three points back with them.
Fred Spragg for Maddocks had a 31 break against Sanjay Chauhan
to put Maddocks one up, followed by Roy Lowe adding a second
when he beat Geoff French. Barrie Easthope then gave the home
side hope for revival when he defeated Ian Courtney, but that
was short lived as Ken Davies overcame Arthur Aston to make
it 3-1 to Maddocks. The last game of the evening saw Peter
Wharton rack up 61 points to Mick Wainwright junior’s
55 in a close game.
Audco B were away to LDS C and clocked up a 3-2 win with
C. Hughes taking the first point for Audco. G. Walls evened
things up and then Alex Turnbull regained the lead for Audco.
M. Rhodes just pipped Andy Yates 39-38 to set up the decider
between Pete Smith and S. Hamilton. Pete won this game to
give his side the match result.
Hadley A were once again beaten by Newport B 3-2, a better
showing than our 5-0 mauling earlier in the season. Gareth
Hughes, (despite playing with a bad shoulder & bad cueing
action), started the rot with a 48-59 defeat to Ian Stevenson.
A full one hour and 25minutes later! The 2nd frame of the
evening got under way, with the ever-improving Tugboat defeating
Alan Munn 58-51 in a closely fought game. Kev Whitehead then
increased the Hadley boys’ advantage to take the next
frame with a convincing 67-18 defeat of Allan Davies. Al Francis,
suffering with a severe ear infection, which was affecting
his balance (nothing to do with the eight pints he'd consumed),
conceded the next frame against Keith Gardner 16-56. Then
with the Hadley bar staff waiting to lock up & go home
Iain Atkinson played Richard Goldie (returning to his old
hunting ground) & continued his long winless streak, losing
47-62, to land a 3-2 win for the Newport boys. So much for
the league title then!
