TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 6th December 2006

Broseley A, at home this week to LDS A, made a point up on the leaders after recording a 4-1 victory over the Little Dawley side. Graeme Long won the opening frame in a very close game when he just got the better of Darren Pountney on the black. Simon McLeod, in a high scoring game took the second frame for Broseley, beating Tim Hicks. Matt Bailey pulled one back for the Little Dawley side overcoming Carl Walker before Simon Thomas with breaks of 38 and 31 for Broseley had a comfortable win over Jesse Lowe. Mick Brezwyn added the fourth point in the final frame with Stu Russell losing that game.

Minnesota B with home advantage, could only take three points from their match with Shifnal B. Simon Yeates got the Min’s off to a good start beating Aaron Sparkes with Darren Weston increasing the lead against Rob Wright. Next up for Min was P. Smith (Troggy), who came up against the very useful Matt Davies. Matt won this frame easily to get a point back for the Shifnal team. Keith Price made a 37 break over his opponent, Ray Evans to make it 3-1 to the home side. In the final match, Dave Peplow gave the score line some respectability with a fine win in another closely contested match with Sean Harris.

Shifnal A saw a good performance yield four points from their home meeting with Dawley A, with Andy Easthope taking the first frame from Rick Bailey. Rick must have been disappointed with some of the chances he missed. Grant Heighway levelled the match winning his game with Lindsay Knox, but that was as far as the challenge went with Shifnal taking the next three frames. A small note at the end of this card recorded Angus (Lucky) Way as winning the last frame of the evening.

In the derby match, Anstice C beat their D side 3-2, but just drop one point behind Dawley A at the bottom of the division. Closest game in this match was the opening frame when Darren Wilkie beat Paul Devey 56-54.

Another local derby match between Bayley F and Bayley A saw a dip in the Bayley F sides form. They slumped to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the their struggling A side. The Bayley A side will welcome this result, and this puts them straight back in touch with the three teams above them.

In fact, the other Bayley side, Bayley E, lost their match 4-1 to Maddocks A in spite of having home advantage, which puts them on level points with their A side. Ian Skelton recorded a 37 break when he trounced Dave France. Andy O’Brien had a 22 whilst beating Leigh France but that was as much as the Bayley E-side could muster. Phil Davis for Maddocks won the third with Les Stirling following suit beating John Squire. In the last frame Dave France for Maddocks took the last game from Steve Hoof

Second Division

After their great cup win against Broseley A last week, Maddocks C strengthened their hold as leaders of the 2nd Division with a very lucky 4-1 home win against the gentlemen from Bayley B. First up for the Maddocks was Danny Bedworth who played his friend Kev West. Both players had respect and some good safety was played for the first 30 minutes but soon Danny managed an 18 break to put distance between them and potted some great balls to put the Maddocks in front, even if it did cost him a pint, 70-32. Skipper Graham Hoof then tried to extend the lead but could not match Kevin McLeod in the potting department and the Oakengates man came up short, 31-39.

If ever there has been a game where the loser deserved to win then it must go to Danny Oliver who came up against Jimmy Hill. The likeable Danny potted well and had Jim on the rack for all of the game but, with all the run of the balls, the Ironman managed to keep in the game and scrape over the line, 54-25. Steve Hassack was up next and he had to fight all the way to keep his unbeaten record going against Dickie Beddall. The Wellington man looked to square the match on the colours but missed a difficult pot and Steve took the balls to creep over the line with the pink, 47-36.

Finally it was the battle of the Olivers with Joe playing “Uncle” Dickie. Both started well but it was Dickie who took a lead going to the colours. Joe cleared the last few balls to leave a black decider, and the lotto numbers came up again for Maddocks with Joe potting the important ball and take the undeserved win.

How the away side never went back to Wellington with a win surprised everyone, but the luck seems to go with you when you’re leading the division.

Audco are still in second place but seem to be losing a little ground each week. Andy Phelan got Audco off to a good start when they played Shifnal F beating Gary Love. The next frame seemed to be going quite well for Audco player Andy Kendrick until Chris Painter knocked in a good 31 break and went on to win the frame. Fred Harper couldn’t believe he beat Mick Hughes after Mick had everything going for him except maybe a win on the lottery! In a good competitive game Alan Turner managed to beat Dave Chapman, and then the decider saw John Briscoe beat Graham Darrall to secure the match for the Shifnal side.

Second Club A played their club mates Second Club B with Ian Ferriday gaining a comfortable win over Mike Thompson. Next game was a much tighter affair with Graham Arnold just getting home in front of Toby Welsh 52-47 to take the second frame for the A-side. Paul Crooks then pulled one back for the B-side beating, L. Giles. In the next frame Keith Mears won the match beating Dave Welsh. Neil Robinson had an easy win to gain the B-sides second point beating K. Owen. Second Club A have now drawn a little closer to the Audco A side, and no doubt will be breathing down Audco's necks in the coming weeks!

Bayley D, just one point behind their B team managed a 3-2 win over Little Dawley G. Dave Dudley won the first frame for the Bayley side and in the second game Craig Whitehead lost is unbeaten record when G. Copson won 57-16. Little Dawley G took the third frame, R, Levenue beating Jim Lewis, before Dave Williams levelled by beating Rob Withington in a close game 45-34. Darren Rhodes had a 23 break and took the last game, also very narrowly, playing G. Wiley, 56-50.

Coddon B hosted Minnesota Fats A but could not find a way past the Oakengates side. All started well for the Coddon men when Mark wall potted well to beat Nick Turner and put the home team one up. The next frame was between two good performers, Andy “Jonah” Jones and Craig “Grinder” Davies, and it was the Minnie man that pulled through with solid play to level the match. Dave Lloyd then continued his unbeaten form this season coming from behind against James Price, who made a good break of 28, to retake the lead for Coddon.

The final two frames both went to the black ball. Nick Pearce was unlucky to take the match for the Home team by going in off against Tony Marsh setting up the decider between away skipper Wayne “Specsavers” Weeks and Dave Holmes. Dave played a good match after recovering from a month off through injury but it was Wayne who took the match 3-2 for the visitors and ease any relegation worries.

Minnesota Fats A were at home to the Coddon C this week and lost the first four frames. A good result this for dark horses Coddon C, and it was only Neil Pearson who stopped the white wash for Min Fats by beating Fraser McKinnon.

Third Division

Anstice B racked up a 5-0 victory when they were at home to the Audco B side this week. All of the Anstice players’ scores were in the 60’s with Billy Watson having a 22 clearance in the last game of the evening to snatch victory from P. Stokes.

Dawley B are hot on the heels of the Anstice lads and they used their home advantage well when they beat the visiting Newport B team 4-1. Paul Harper recorded a 44 break in his match with Keith Gardener. Only winner for Newport was Richard Goldie whose form is holding well at the moment. Little Dawley C played Shifnal D at Little Dawley and Shifnal came away winning the match 3-2. This result finds them both mid table and just one point apart

There are only four points between third placed Shifnal D and the next six places in this division, and two of those are Maddocks B and Maddocks D who played each other in a local derby match. Once again it turned out to be a 3-2 win, this time for the D-side. Wally Harper lost the opening frame to K. Davies and Doug Morrey replied for the B-side by beating T. O’Neil. One each, and next John Archer lost to B Tranter giving the D side a 2-1 lead. The next frame saw the match go to Maddocks D when Fred Spragg beat Steve Pritchard 57-45. Martin Colley took the last frame for the B-side beating I. Courtner.

Hadley A made the long trip to Comrades, but could only return with one point, that secured by their star player, Kevin Whitehead. Hadley are in joint bottom spot with Audco B, but both of these teams are six points adrift from the next team above them.

NB: We have had a mystery amount of money given to the treasurer, bags of 5/10/20 and 50 pence pieces, could the captain of this, please contact any of the committee ASAP please !!
