TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 13th December 2006

Before I start this weeks report, I would like to mention a result emailed to me from Nigel Stallard. Matt Davies played his individual match earlier this week, best of three. In the first frame, Matt made a break of 120, followed by a 130 clearance. Must have been a pleasure to watch, well done Matt.

Third Division

Anstice B were away to Maddocks D this week, and lost only their second match of the season. Fred Spragg in a high scoring game got Maddocks off to a good start beating Stew Wimbush before Mick Cahill levelled the scores by defeating R. Lowe. I. Courtney then trounced Billy Watson 43-3 before Noel Stones brought the match level again with a victory over new signing T. Hampson. The decider could not have been any closer when T. O’Neil just got the better of George Hammond 49-48 to give Maddocks D the match.

Dawley B move within one point of the Anstice B side now after gaining a good 4-1 win when they visited Shifnal D. Ian Ward for Dawley beat T. Askew with Kev Jones adding the second point for the Dawley side. Geoff French then pulled one back for Shifnal D, just getting the better of Nigel Brazenhall on the black. Barry Roden then regained the lead for Dawley beating Barrie Easthope. Alex Jones completed the evening to make it 4-1 with a comfortable win over Arthur Aston.

Comrades A are doing well so far this season and they visited the Bayley club and came away with a 3-2 win. Chris Bates won the first frame for the Bayley side on the black ball against M. Wordsell, with Mark Jones replying for Comrades beating Chris Fletcher to even things up. Rob Cook took the third frame convincingly and having a 20 break in his win over C. Crook. That was the end of the scoring for the Bayley club as S. Jones easily beat Chris Durham, but in the last high scoring game of the evening the decider between Richard Tranter for the Bayley, and S. Preece for Comrades ended up 79-67 to give Comrades the match win.

Maddocks B returned a 4-1 win after going to the Newport Legion B side. The Maddocks side won the first four frames comfortably, with the inform Richard Goldie stopping the rot with a win over Martin Colley to gain the only point of the evening for the Newport British Legion. Maddocks are now joint fourth position with the Comrades side.

Mid-table Little Dawley B went to the Audco B side this week and found the Audco side showing a return of form, as Audco went on to win this match 3-2. Nice to see and old teammate of mine making a guest appearance. Anyone who knows him will be aware of “John Rawlings specials” and on the night he had four specials, which helped him to an easy victory over Tom Wotherspoon. The match did go to a decider which Alex Turnbull winning the frame against Simon Evans.

Hadley a suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of LDS C who had the home advantage. The closest game of the evening was between C. Kesterton for the Little Dawley side who played Kev Whitehead with that score line 57-41 in favour of C. Kesterton. The poor Hadley side never came close to winning another game on the night and the only way from here is up!

Second Division

Leaders of Division Two suffered their second defeat of the season to visitors Bayley D who deserved the result. Steve Hassack started the balls rolling against Craig Whitehead and with both players top of the averages something had to give. Steve and Craig did not play up to the pre-match hype and probably gave each other too much respect. The Bayley man ended up taking advantage of Stevens missed chances and took the frame, which also his put paid to his 100% record. 57-65. The home side welcomed back Brendan Wincott for his second match of the season and he didn’t disappoint with a good solid display of potting at the right times to beat Dave Williams, 57-21.

Next up was Jimmy Hill playing gentleman Brian Aberdeen. Jim started well and took an early lead but Brian made a strong comeback and got one of the two snookers required only to watch the Oakengates man pot the Blue to win, 57-27. With all of the first 3 frames managing 57 points each for the home side, Skipper Graham Hoof had to produce some form against Darren Rhodes. But it was the Wellington man that managed to pot a great long blue to level the match, 32-48.

The deciding frame was between Joe Oliver and Dave Dudley, and what a performance the visitor had. Joe never had a chance with Daves potting and safety play and he deserved to take the win for himself and the Bayley Boys.

The result leaves Maddocks C top and gives hope of a promotion chase for the nice lads from Bayley D.

Second placed Audco A, at home to LDS G were two frames down and fielding two reserves for this match but came back to take the match 3-2. Playing his debut in the snooker league, highlight of the evening was Richard Jags who managed to beat Graham Copson with a length of the table fine cut on the pink. The decider was won by Graham Darrall who beat young Ian Fleming.

Second club A made the short journey to Minnesota Fats where they played the Min G side. G. Arnold took the first frame of the evening for the Second club beating Nick Turner, with Wayne weeks levelling for Min G against L. Giles. Ian Ferriday restored the lead for the Second club getting the better of Tony Marsh, and then a very close match when Craig Davies beat K. Mears on the black. In the deciding frame another close game, and that score was James Price of Min G, 55 and K. Owen, 48. The Second club are still pushing Audco A in the quest for promotion.

Coddon B are not far off the pace although they suffered a 3-2 defeat when they visited the Bayley B side. Kev West won the first game 64-46 against Mark Wall putting the Bayley side one up. Andy Jones replied for Coddon to level affairs followed by C. Baugh for Bayley who inflicted the first defeat of the season on Dave Lloyd 64-39. R. Bedall then beat Nick Pearce with Dave Holmes for the Coddon taking the last frame of the evening to make the score line 3-2 to the Bayley.

Coddon C were at home but also lost their match with Shifnal F 3-2. Tough side to beat these Shifnal lads, as we found out when we visited them earlier this season. Daniel Ballard made a nice 38 in the opening frame and trounced Gary Love 83-1 to give Coddon the lead. Chris Painter then returned the compliment by knocking in a 29 break beating Josh Wall 74-5 to level matters. The next frame was a black ball affair with Dave Chapman for Shifnal just pipping Matt Bothwell 56-55. The next frame was similar with Ray Whitehead scoring 40 and Fred Harper for Shifnal 47. The final frame saw yet another break, this time for Fraser McKinnon who had a 30 on his way to victory over John Briscoe.

First Division

With only four results in this week from division one the next report courtesy of Darren Pountney.

Little Dawley A played hosts to the league leaders this week and would have fancied their chances with a full squad available to pick from for the first time this season, giving captain Lee Elcock a headache. Matt Bailey got the Little Dawley lads off to a great start outgunning Paul "troggy" Smith in a very open first frame full of excellent potting. This lead was soon wiped out with the in-form Shaun Harris playing old teammate Tim Hicks, and on this occasion Shaun was too strong knocking in an excellent 61 break on his way to levelling things at 1-1.

Minnesota soon turned the tide and took the lead when Darren Weston played an excellent frame, knocking in a 46 against Jesse Lowe making it 2-1 and with Ian Duffy to follow, must have fancied wrapping up what was becoming a tricky fixture. Another ex team mate, Darren Pountney had other ideas taking on Ian Duffy, having to play with teammate Matt Bailey's cue, levelled things up at 2-2 in a solid display against Ian.

Simon Yeates destroyed Lee Elcock in the last with another 40+ break to ensure the Minnesota lads stayed at the top of the table but positive news for Little Dawley with a few key players beginning to return to form for the second half of the season.

In the first frame of the Shifnal B against Anstice C game, Matt Davies took on the Anstice captain F Williams. This was a big ask for Frank, with Matty compiling breaks of 30 and 20 to see his side go one up, in frame two A Sparkes took on D Wilkie, which proved to be A match of high quality, both players potting well, but Aaron had a 20 plus break midway through the game to put him firmly in control and put the home side two up. In frame three things started badly for the home side, with Dave Peplow the conqueror of S Harris the week before, hitting the blue ball of the break, neither player really found their form in this game, but it was Steve Camp who eventually came out on top to pull a frame back for the Anstice.

In frame four Chris Woods came up against an inspired Rob Wright, who knocked in a couple of really nice breaks, and even though Chris made a valiant attempt to get back into the game, it was Rob who finished off the colours to give his team the win overall and put them 3-1 up. In the last frame, it was another case of neither player being able to stamp their authority on the game, with the Shifnal captain Nigel Stallard playing John Jones, Nigel had the first chance at winning the frame, after potting yellow and green, he missed an easy opportunity on the brown, John came back to the table and cleared up to the pink to claim the final point, leaving the final result 3-2 to the home team.

Bayley A were the home side in the match between them selves and Maddocks A. Maddocks raced into a 3-0 lead with Phil Davis securing the first point for Maddocks beating C.Morgan-Adams including a 38 break. Ian Skelton made it two beating M. Hodson 72-26, with Les Stirling adding the third defeating Bob Mason. Steve Fletcher then got the only point for his side with a win over Dave France before Dave’s son, Leigh made it four for Maddocks by beating Spencer Rowley.

Dawley A suffered their second 4-1 defeat in a row when they played the Bayley F side at the Dawley club. This scorecard was hardly discernible but I can justify three winners. Richie Hulme beat A. Nolan in the first frame and Tom Maxfield beat Grant Heighway in the third. Paul Maxfield also won his frame 56-48 with P. Nolan.
