Before we start this weeks match reports, we would just
like to point out that where a team fails to field a full
side, then that frame shall be conceded 147-0, also please
be aware that in the semi-finals, ALL players must be there
at the stated time, as teams are drawn from a hat for order
of play.
In the Team Knockout matches, Shifnal B entertained LDS C,
with the division one side having to concede a hefty 135 on
the handicap. Things didn’t start too well for the home
side with Gary Walls flying out of the blocks in his match
against Rob Wright, Gary potted well throughout his match,
combining it with some good safety to put himself well in
front. Rob clawed his way back potting the remaining colours,
losing the match 53-49. In frame two, Chris Nibblett took
on Matt Davies and surprisingly Chris took an early lead 11-0,
with Chris laying up a good safety shot, but Matt potted a
brilliant red and in one of the best constructed breaks seen
at Shifnal this season went on to record a table clearing
break of 115, which was applauded in a very sporting manner
by the LDS C Team players. This put the home side only 31
points behind, and in frame three Aaron Sparkes took on C
Kesterton. This time it was the away player who knocked in
some superb pots, matching Aaron pot for pot, things were
close going into the last three colours, then Carl fluked
a blue and cleared the remaining colours to win the frame
52-51, putting his side further ahead.
In frame four, Ray Evans took on A Garbett and yet again
the away player took the early advantage, with some nice pots
throughout the early exchanges, Ray fought back well and with
a 23 break saw a kick on the green deny of a table clearance.
Both players went on to play a bit of safety, eventually sharing
the remaining colours, Ray Evans winning 44-40. This left
Nigel Stallard going on 32 behind in the last, where yet again
it was the away player Sam Hamilton who took the early advantage
potting well in the early exchanges to put his side some 40+
points up on the handicap. Nigel fought back well and with
just the pink and black remaining was 7 points up overall,
but Sam knocked in a fantastic pink and black to give his
side the narrow margin victory of 6 points.
Another Little Dawley side also went through, this time the
G team who beat Coddon B (LDS G having a 50 point handicap
advantage). In the first, Mark Wall for the away side set
about reducing this against G Wiley, both players playing
well throughout their frame, Mark taking it 58-54. In the
next Andy Jones played brilliantly against I Flemming, potting
well throughout taking the frame 72-14, leaving his side only
one behind on the handicap. Then the league president Rob
Withington took on D Lloyd, steadying the ship for the home
side, playing good safety, and restricting Dave to very few
chances. Rob eventually winning 56-43. In frame four T Bell
took on N Pearce, and the home player put his team into great
position going into the last, taking the frame 64-29 and putting
the home side 49 points up. This left R Leneveu to hold the
home sides advantage against D Holmes, who put in a determined
performance, eventually winning 45-44, but it was the LDS
side who went through.
Minnesota Fats B beat the Bayley E team in the other game,
no match card received. Maddocks D v Bayley A result not yet
in.
Consolation Cup
Renowned ‘cup fighters’ , Hadley A continue to
defy the odds and astound themselves by knocking out division
2 side Coddon C from the consolation cup. However it didn't
start too good , with Gareth Hughes losing the first frame
against Daniel Ballard 28-92 , thus wiping out 64 points off
their original 90 point advantage. Things got a little better
when Tugboat beat Josh Wall 58-43 to restore some hope , but
all that was washed away when Al Francis was beaten 19-64
against Matt Bothwell to hand a 4 point advantage to Coddon
going into the final 2 frames.
However, Iain Atkinson took the penultimate frame off Ray
Whitehead 80 points to 19 and the pendulum once more swung
Hadley’s way and with Kev Whitehead going on last with
a 57 point advantage over Fraser McKinnon, and leading 51-12,
it was too much to ask and Fraser sportingly conceded the
frame early, to allow the Hadley boys to celebrate with another
drink. So into the semi-finals go Hadley, Iain said "it's
the first SEMI I’ve had in ages!”
In the match between Newport and Bayley Q, it was the Bayley
side who took an early advantage with Richard Tranter winning
the first 66-37 over A Davies, and in the next a superb performance
by Chris Durham for the Bayley saw him extend his sides lead
beating R Goldie 80-22. In the third frame Chris Fletcher
potted some great balls to leave an unlucky N Simpson struggling
to get his side back into the match, with Chris eventually
taking the frame 71-19. With the Bayley lads now some 130+
points in front, the home captain K Gardner sought to get
his side back into the match, which he did with a magnificent
performance against Rob Cook. With some nice pots and safety
combinations he eventually took the match 70-11, giving his
side a fighting chance going into the last. But Chris Bates
never gave the home player many opportunities in the last
frame with Chris eventually beating J Yapp 53-28, putting
his side into the semi finals of the Consolation cup for the
first time.
LDS A beat Audco B, no match card received. Dawley B v Bayley
D, result not yet known.
