Lets start in the third division this week, after the
break in the league for the divisional finals, and back to
business as normal.
Maddocks B, at home to Shifnal D, created a piece of history
for us this week, when two of our cherished players, Les Hicks
and Arthur Aston, whose combined age totals 164 years, played
each other.
Maddocks lost the opening three frames before campaigner;
Les Hicks took the stage to play Arthur Aston in the fourth
frame.
Les, my ex team mate from the old days, won the frame by
49-31 against Arthur, and I would like to say experience told
in the end, but that wouldn’t be quite true! Well-done
chaps.
Steve Pritchard took the second point for Maddocks beating
G. French 59-18.
Although the tables don’t reflect positions accurately
each week because of byes, the third division see Bayley Q
at the top this week, and nice to see this side amongst the
prizes last season.
They played another set of nice lads, now Hadley A, who make
the backbone of our league, and who also won the sportsman’s
trophy last season.
Bayley Q lost the first frame when Kevin Whitehead beat Pete
smith 60-17, but that was the only point Bayley Q allowed
the Hadley side, and went on to take the next four frames.
Comrades are now settling into the Telford league, and finding
their feet, so to speak. After travelling to probably their
furthest destination, Newport B, they found the trip worthwhile
coming away with three of the five points on offer.
New signing for Comrades, James Pitt was just pipped 44-42
in his first game for the Comrades by Allen Davies.
Les Stirling compiled a 35 break overcoming C. Crook by 59-7.
Bayley B entertained the LDS B side, and came out winners
3-2 courtesy of a last frame win by Dick Oliver over S. Evans,
that score line 54-41.
Second Division.
Anstice C, away to Codden B, lead this division, and recorded
a fine 3-2 win. Two former first division players’ John
Jones and Nick Oakley have joined this side, and I’m
sure they will be an asset over the season. John Jones got
the first point for Anstice beating T. Garmson 69-32, followed
quickly by two more wins from Anstice, Steve Camp 60, Mark
Wall 45, then Andy Elliot 68-10 over Steve Downes.
A. Jones then hit back for Codden beating Nick Oakley in
a close game 56-45.
Nick Pearce took the second point for Codden beating Mike
Musgrove 59-41.
LDS G made sure that the Anstice B-side were not going to
have things their own way in this division, and had a comfortable
4-1 victory when they visited the Anstice team on their own
ground. Most noticeable win of the evening was Graham Wiley’s
defeat of the Noel Stones 53-15.
The Second Club A side are coming back to life a little now,
and that showed in their 4-1 defeat of Bayley D.
Craig Whitehead head was the only winner for the Bayley side,
although they were at home, beating K.Mears 66-37
Shifnal F at home to Codden C, were sailing along quite nicely
in the league, but that came to an abrupt halt this week when
the Codden side took four out of the five games.
Chris Painter made a 35 break in his win over Matt Bothwell,
68-21.
Dawley B, also at home, suffered the same fate, and score
line, losing 4-1 to the Bayley F side.
Richie Hulme started Bayleys run with a 69-41 score against
Ian Ward, followed by an impressive score line of 83-28 for
Paul Maxfield beating Gary Clements. Pauls son Tom, then added
another point by defeating Kev Jones 59-40.
Barry Roden stopped the run briefly, by winning a close encounter
64-55 over Chris Shaw, before Eddie Whitehead cruised to a
79-17 victory over Nigel Brazenhall.
Finally in this division, a local derby between Minn Fats
A and Minn Fats G saw the A side triumph 3-2 over their G
team.
This match had the closest of finishes when Neil Pearson
secured the victory for his side with a black ball win 51-47
over Aaron O’Donnell.
First division.
Broseley A, at home to the Bayley E side have started in
good style in this seasons campaign, and did the business
taking all five points from the Bayley E side, who have not
really kicked into gear yet this season.
Anstice A, with a couple of changes to their team this season,
look to be a little more vulnerable, and could only take three
point from Dawley A, although having home advantage.
Having said that the Dawley side are a very capable team
and every point against them is well earned.
It looks like the same three teams will be contesting the
championship this season; one of those teams being Maddocks
A. Nev Whiteheads report follows.
Maddocks 'c' are now finding it hard in the top flight, as
they were beaten 4-1 against rivals and home side Maddocks
'a'. Newcomer Steve Hassock gave the 'c' team a perfect start.
On facing Lee France, he found himself 20 behind on the last
four colours but he made a brilliant clearance to take the
frame 59-57. Ian Skelton was in no mood to see his side go
2-0 down and came up with the goods including a 54 break to
win his frame impressively 93-8 against Nev Whitehead.
Daz Wincott then made 2-1 with another fine display of potting
resulting in a 39 break. His opponent 'big' Bill Rushton bravely
retaliated but it was then too late and he went down 70-37.
Skipper Dave France then secured the match with a final pink
ball win over Jim Hill 48-30. Ian Eldridge rang up the fourth
point by beating Joe Oliver 52-31 in a match where both players
missed easy opportunities.
Bayley A at home to Anstice D this week, started the match
by winning the first frame 52-8 when Steve Fletcher beat S.
Collins 52-8. That was followed by new signing, J. Johnson,
for the Bayley club, losing by 73-2 to D. Wilkie, who recorded
breaks of 47 and 24 in that frame.
Bayley A never won another frame until S. Rowley beat Paul
Devey in the final frame, on the black, 63-52.
Little Dawley A, who have had an indifferent start to the
season compared with how they finished last season, lost at
home to Shifnal B, who won that match 3-2.
High light of this match was Nigel Stallard playing Darren
Pountney. Darren recorded a 43 break in the game, only to
see Nigel make a brilliant comeback to snatch the frame 53-43.
Little Dawley were losing 3-1 after that game, but Jesse Lowe
returned a good result, beating the in form Rob Wright 67-30
to make it a 3-2 score line to the Shifnal side.
Shifnal A, although winning 4-1 playing the Audco A side
at Shifnal, will be pleased with that win, as the Audco side
battled very hard for some points to try and lift them from
the bottom of the table, and there were some close fought
matches. Once again the only winner was Andy Kendrick’s
who beat Simon Biddulph 54-42.
