As I start this weeks report, I would first like to thank
all who attended Nev Whiteheads funeral service last Wednesday.
It was a great show of respect to a well-liked man, and all
of our sympathies go to Nev’s family.
First report, courtesy of Darren Pountney.
Matt Bailey opened up in quick fire fashion with some excellent
safety play to beat Graham Hoof convincingly to put Lds A,
1-0 up. Maddocks hit back quickly though with T. Hassock,
who made it 1-1 with a convincing win against an out of sorts
Tim Hicks. Jim Hill continued Maddocks good work to put them
two up, and in reach of the finish line with a tactical battle
against Jesse Lowe. Lee Elcock put paid to any thoughts of
Maddocks winning the match early, with a fine win over Billy
Rushton to square things at 2-2. Performance of the night
from Darren Pountney ensured the win for Lds, with an excellent
show of potting and safety against S. Hassock to make it 3-2
to Little Dawley.
Maddocks A were at home to the Audco a-side, and must have
been a little surprised that the struggling Audco side managed
to take two points from them, courtesy of Graham Darrell beating
Leigh France 37-10, and in the final match Andy Kendrick having
a win over Dave France 45-34.
Shifnal B entertained the Bayley e-side who came away with
three of the five points on offer. Although Matt Davies was
in fine form getting his team off to a flyer by winning the
opening frame, and also compiling an 88 along the way against
P. O’Brien the only other point was gained by Rob Wright,
who in a close encounter with A. Jones won 50-45.
Champions Anstice A seem to be feeling the pinch a little,
and although with home advantage to the Shifnal a-side lost
3-2 to Shifnal. Ian Duffy took the first point from Simon
Biddulph winning 75-45, with Shawn Harris well beating Lindsay
Knox 57-8. Then came three black ball finishes for the Shifnal
side, with wins from J. Fallows over K. Price, 55-52 followed
by Andy Easthopes win, 72-61 against Simon Yeats. In the last
game Angus Way completed the win for Shifnal, triumphing 46-36
against Richard Wade.
Sir John Bayley A will be feeling a little unlucky only to
have gained one point from their match with Dawley A. Dawley
were visiting the Bayley club, and two of their three points
were gained on black ball finishes. Arthur Burrows had a good
win over Pete Nolan 64-27 in the third frame, after the Bayley
side had dropped the first two points. Sean Nolan from Dawley
won on the black against Chris Morgan-Adams in the first frame,
and then Chris Woods beat Spencer Rowley 51-38. Mark Jones
took the fourth frame for Dawley to go three up, beating Bob
Mason 56-22, before Steve Fletcher lost on the black 57-46
to Rick Bailey.
Broseley A, at home this week to the Anstice D team, recorded
a 5-0 win over the Anstice team. The first two points were
narrowly taken for Broseley when Carl Walker beat Paul Devey
49-38, and Graham Long beating S. Collins 55-45. Simon McLeod
added the third by beating D. Wilkie 57-32. Mick Brezwyn put
a 38 break together to beat Nigel Wallcroft. Nigel, who has
been playing very well to date, lost the match by 61-32. S.
Thomas had the most comfortable win of the match to make it
5-0 for Broseley beating K Blackham 63-7.
In the second division this week, every match returned a
3-2 result.
Codden B won their match at home playing LDS G. Best win of
the evening from N. Pearce who defeated T. Bell 63-10.
Minnesota Fats A raced into a 3-0 lead when the Trench Second
Club A visited them in O,gates. Mick Pearson started the ball
rolling by taking the first game from Ian Ferriday, 69-29.
Next up Neil Pearson who had a comfortable win over K. Mears,
72-22. G. Corten secured the match by beating R. Smith 52-35,
before K. Owen for the Second Club, stopped the charge by
defeating Mick Egan 62-22 in the fourth frame. L. Giles took
the last game for the Second Club a-side beating Kirk Stevenson
65-13.
Bayley F, although at home to the Codden C side, lost their
match 3-2, and are not showing the consistent form of last
season so far.
Shifnal F entertained the Anstice C team, and this match
was decided in the last frame when D Pye got the better of
M. Musgrave winning on the black 54-41.
Meanwhile, the other Anstice team, Anstice B had the home
advantage over Bayley D. It didn’t turn out to be home
advantage in the end though, as the Bayley side inflicted
a 3-2 defeat on the Anstice B side, who may have found their
niche in the league.
The last match in this division saw the Dawley B side at
home to Minnesota Fats G. K. Jones lost the first game to
the Min Fats side when James Price won that game 63-14. The
very experienced Paul Harper then won his game easily, returning
a score line of 73-17 over C. Davies. A. Jones regained the
impetus for Dawley winning a close frame over Wayne Weeks
53-42. Another change in direction yet again when Martin Watkins
beat Barry Roden of Dawley 57-41. This set up the decider,
which saw G. Clements take the match for Dawley, 3-2, by beating
Aaron O’Donnell 59-22.
In division three, new team Comrades were in impressive form
when they visited the Little Dawley D side taking all five
points from the match.
Hadley B gained their first match win of the season in spite
of the usually solid Kev Whitehead losing the first frame
to Phil Cottey 63-31. Phil had a 31 break during that frame.
Rich Benting then lost a close game to P. Clarke 55-43 before
lain Atkinson comprehensively beat C. Gittus 66-15. This game
started Hadley’s revival, as Gareth Hughes took the
frame from T. Wotherspoon, 46-33 to set up the deciding frame
between Al Francis and S. Darrock from LDS B. Al Francis ran
out the winner with a scorline of 50-24 in his favour to give
Hadley the spoils.
Bayley Q are holding their form well. In spite of losing
their two opening games when they visited Second Club B, they
came back to take the last three games to win the match. Tom
Firmstone got the first point for the Second Club with a good
victory over Pete Smith, 78-37, and that was followed by Paul
Crooks who had a 28 break, beating Chris Durham 79-40. Bayley
then hit back with Rob Cook beating Mike Thompson in a close
game 63-55, followed by an even closer game with Chris Bates
pipping Dave Welsh by two points, 47-45. Steve Weatherall
then completed the comeback comfortably winning his frame
with Neil Robinson 57-24.
Bayley B at home to Maddocks B, started well winning the
first frame, but eventually lost the match 3-2. Highlight
of this match was a very good break of 55 by K. West over
Wally Harper, that scoreline 80-32.
Thanks to Shifnal D this week, who agreed to reverse the
fixture between themselves and Newport B. The Newport B side
were unable to play at home due to vandalism at their club.
This was another match where Newport after losing the two
opening frames came back to take the match 3-2. Terry Askew
started by defeating Allan Davies 46-32 to give Shifnal the
lead, before Sanjay Chauhan got their second point beating
Richard Goldie 69-38.
Keith Gardner than started the revival with a close win over
Geoff French 65-57. John Yapp continued the revival adding
another point for Newport, beating Arthur Aston 69-42. The
very capable Les Stirling then won the deciding game by a
score of 62-23 playing Barrie Easthope.
