Before I start this weeks report I would like to mention
that it appears there is no space in the newspaper for our
reports. A recent enquiry from our competitions secretary
has revealed that with pool and angling contracted to the
paper, unfortunately the snooker is to be left out! Not receiving
the Journal in Newport I hadn’t noticed that the reports
have been missing for so long. I am suggesting that for players
to be able to read these reports it would be useful if those
members that have a computer could maybe print a copy and
post it on their club notice board. I think there are sufficient
internet members to cover all of our playing clubs. Feedback
from anyone would be helpful, as it takes a long time to compile
snooker reports, especially if they only get read by a handful
of our members.
However, back to business and I will start in the first division
this week.
Potential champions Broseley popped down the road this week
to play the Dawley A side and the following report was kindly
sent in by Mark Jones.
Frame one saw Mark Jones playing Carl Walker. Carl went into
a 20+ lead early in the frame only for Mark to come back well
with some gritty safety play & snookers. It was nip &
tuck after that, and the frame went to the last two colours.
Both players had chances but it was Carl who took the first
frame on the pink with a score line of 54 points to 45.
Frame two saw Dawley's birthday boy Chris Woods up against
Broseley's "hungry" Graham Long. After Graham had
finished his dinner, it was down to the serious business of
the snooker where he was in no mood to give Wooder any early
presents as he went into a good lead, which Chris never really
threatened. Graham took the frame with a score of 64 points
to 19. Wooder did have a fifty on the night but that was his
age. Happy Birthday YOG. !!!
Frame three saw Dawley's flying Scotsman Pete Nolan up against
Broseley captain Simon McLeod. Pete played as if he was on
the practice table and a scintillating few visits saw him
put himself well in control and he went on to take Dawley's
first point of the night with a frame score of 53 points to
28.
Frame four saw Dawley's player of the season Sean Nolan up
against Mick Brezwyn. Sean soon got into his usual rhythm
and with regular scoring visits ran out a comfortable winner
to make the match all square on the night with a frame score
of 72 points to 47.
The final and deciding frame saw Rick Bailey up against Simon
Thomas. Simon got himself into a 20+ lead in the early part
of this frame only for Reckless to claw his way back well.
However, Rick played a loose safety with three reds remaining
and this let in Simon who took the chance to put himself in
the clear. Simon closed the frame out to give Broseley a 3
- 2 victory with a frame score of 70 points to 41.
Unfortunately the second and third teams both had points given
to them due to a shortage of players.
Audco lost two of their players due to prior commitments,
and one with no transport, so LDS A were given the match 5-0.
Anstice A went to Maddocks and also found that Maddocks could
only field three players. Maddocks took two out of those three
frames so Anstice were also gifted two frames.
Looking at the two fixtures left Anstice may still take second
place with LDS A playing Shifnal A, and then the deciding
match could be when Anstice and LDS A meet in the last game
of the season.
Bayley E were at home to Anstice D, and are still hanging
on to this division, although losing the match 3-2.
Ken Davies lost narrowly to Steve Collins 52-41 in the first
frame, and equally as close Andy O’Brien took the next
for Bayley beating Paul Devey 54-49. Ali Jones then got another
point for Bayley with a 68-43 win over S. Osbourne.
John Squires had no answer to Nigel Wallcroft who won his
frame easily with a score line of 66-19, and the last frame
also went to Anstice, with Keith Blackham defeating Dave France
46-29.
In the relegation battle between Maddocks C and Bayley A
the Bayley A side suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Shifnal
A, which brings the Maddocks side to within one point of the
Bayley side.
The next report courtesy of Jim Hill.
Maddocks C entertained Shifnal B knowing that a win was vital
to their survival chances, but came up short.
Matt Davies started the balls dropping by beating Graham
Hoof. Matty continued his great form with a break of 94, but
he missed a regulation blue to take the top break prize to
112…from himself!
Next up were the “babies” of the teams, Steve
Hassack against Aaron Sparks. The game started poorly with
both players making mistakes. Steve then came to life first
and knocked in a break of 51 to put the game beyond the Shifnal
lad.
Billy Rushton then tried to get the Ironmen ahead but could
not find his old form and lost out to Chris Petford on the
colours.
Jimmy Hill, back from skiing in Italy, seemed to be suffering
from altitude sickness and could not match Rob Wright who
deservedly won on the pink ball.
Last up was the usual battle between Joe Oliver and Dave
Peplow and once again it came down to a black ball finish
with Joe taking a difficult black to clinch a much-needed
point for Maddocks.
The result leaves Shifnal in a comfortable mid-table position
but pushes Maddocks C towards the trapdoor with only 2 games
remaining…time is against them!
Second Division
Even though the Bayley F result didn’t arrive in time
for this report, this division title looks wrapped up by Anstice
C now.
Anstice were away to the Codden C side who made little impression
on the Anstice lads.
John Jones took the first frame 61-36, with D. Holmes levelling
the match one each, as he beat Steve Camp 39-23. However,
that was the last point the Codden saw as Anstice went on
to a 4-1 win.
LDS G now leapfrog the Codden C side after recording a 4-1
win over Shifnal F.
LDS G raced into a 3-0 lead until D. Pye took a point off
LDS when he beat R. Levenue in a closely contested frame,
that score 54-48. G. Copson then regained control and came
out a comfortable winner over J. Briscoe 50-15.
Codden B who played the Bayley D at the Bayley club won this
match convincingly 5-0.
Nick Pearce started the ball rolling for Codden with a 53-23
win over Dave Dudley, and this seemed to set the scene for
the evening, as there didn’t seem to be a close game,
according to the card.
Andy Garmson beat Craig Whitehead 46-24 followed by A. Jones
51-12 win over Dave Williams. Steve Downes then came up trumps
48-25 in his game with Daz Rhodes, before Mark Wall completed
the victory 62-22 over Brian Aberdeen.
Second Club A, safe in mid table, gained a 3-2 win over the
Dawley B side who now look to be heading down to the third
division along with Anstice B.
Both Anstice and Dawley are five points adrift of Minnesota
Fats G whose result is also missing this week.
Third Division
Second Club B are five points ahead at the top of division
three after visiting the LDS B side. Tom Firmstone gave them
just the start they wanted beating Simon Evans 58-14, and
Pete Clarke then hit back for the little Dawley side 51-21
against Dave Welsh.
Toby Welsh regained the lead beating C. Gittus 42-23, and
in a close finish Tom Wotherspoon then got the better of Paul
Crooks 45-36.
That left the decider between Neil Robinson and “Snowy”
Darrock. In a high scoring game the Second Club man, Neil
Robinson just pipped snowy on the black with a score line
of 59-50.
LDS D who decided to complete their fixtures after all, lost
3-2 away to Shifnal D.
LDS D who have a bye next week are unfortunately unable to
field a team for the last match of the season, which will
obviously make a difference to the table positions. They were
to play Bayley B who are on joint second with Bayley Q and
Maddocks B.
Bayley B managed a 3-2 win over the Newport Legion with K.
West opening the scoring for the Bayley side with a 49-15
win over Richard Goldie. Allan Davies retrieved a point for
the legion beating C. Baugh 38-20.
The Bayley side then went 2-1 up with Dan Oliver defeating
Nigel Simpson 61-27. The match was clinched for the Bayley
side in the next frame when R. Beddall was a comfortable winner
over John Yapp 71-39.
In the last frame Dick Oliver gave Les Stirling a hard fought
game, but just lost out to Les 46-40.
Maddocks B, also in contention for promotion visited Hadley
A and brought back three of the five points on offer.
Wally Harper won a closely fought game in the first frame
of the evening, just getting the better of Roy Francis 58-52.
Another close game again in the next, as Kevin Whitehead for
Hadley beat Doug Morrey 53-41.
Les Hicks restored the lead for the Maddocks side, and yet
again another tight finish, 68-57 to Les against “Tugboat”
Benting.
Steve Pritchard appeared to have an easier frame after beating
Allen Francis 73-44, before lain Atkinson got the second point
of the match for Hadley beating John Archer 59-29.
