TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 15th March 2006

A slight problem in the third division this week as it suddenly appeared that one of the teams might have had to pull out! Hopefully that is not the position now and the table will remain the same, so I will start my report in this division.

The Second Club B side head the third division this week with a 3-2 win over the newly entered Comrades “A”. Tom Firmstone got his side off to a fine start when he beat S. Jones 51-18, and with the home advantage Mike Thompson failed to build on that lead as G. Young took the next frame for Comrades 54-20.

Paul Crooks restored the lead with a win of 59-42 over M. Wordsell and S. Preece then set up a deciding match by beating Toby Welsh 50-22. In the final frame Neil Robinson won the match for the Second Club in a closely fought match, by beating M. Jones 55-41.

Bayley Q without a match this week now find themselves in second spot with Maddocks B closing the gap and reaching third place in the division.

Maddocks B were away to the Newport Legion and went into a 4-0 lead with Wally Harper taking the first frame off John Yapp 59-51. That was followed by Doug Morrey matching Wally’s performance and beating Richard Goldie 59-14.

Steve Pritchard continued the run with another comfortable score line 57-18 over Keith Gardener and Les Hicks made it 4-0 defeating Nigel Simpson 56-32. In the last game of the evening Les Stirling stopped the white wash with a 69-21 victory over Martin Colley.

LDS D had a local derby match with their LDS B side but with only two of the LDS D squad available the match went 3-2 to the B-side.

Hadley A remain at the bottom of the table after visiting Shifnal D and losing the match 3-2.

Second Division

Anstice C still remain seven points clear at the top of the division in spite of losing their away match 3-2 to Bayley F.

John Jones gave Anstice the start they would have wanted taking the first frame from Chris Shaw 65-42. Steve Camp also took the next from Tom Maxfield 56-31, but that was to be the last win of the evening for Anstice, as Bayley came back strongly in the next, courtesy of Eddie Whitehead’s easy win 88-1 over Andy Elliot.

Paul Maxfield then got the better of Mike Musgrave in a closely fought game and came out on top 60-50. The last game saw Ritchie Hulme compile a 45 break and go on to beat Nick Oakley 75-9.

Codden C beat last years promoted side, Anstice B 4-1 and moved a point closer to second placed Bayley F but almost certainly too much to do with so few games remaining to claim second spot.

Noel Stones with the home advantage beat D. Ballard 68-21 having a 49 break during the match, but that was as far as it went for Anstice B as they lost the next four games on the reel. Although the second frame went to the wire with Matt Bothwell beating Daz Shaw 58-53 there wasn’t much else Anstice could do to stop a fourth consecutive 4-1 loss.

Codden B at home to the Second Club A side inflicted a 4-1 defeat on the Trench lads but in spite of their current position it looks like the Second Club have enough points in the bag to avoid a relegation struggle.

Tony Garmson won the first frame against P. Jones but only just, 44-34. Andy Jones then recorded a comfortable win over L. Watson, 65-11 before Ian Ferriday pulled one back for Trench by beating Mark Wall 56-51.

Another close game followed with Steve Downes getting the better of Lloyd Giles 54-40, and in the last frame of the evening Nick Pearce made it 4-1 with a score line of 54-15 against K. Owen.

Bayley D away to Minnesota Fats A managed a 3-2 win over the Oakengates side with Dave Dudley starting the ball rolling with a 54-27 win over K. Stevenson. Mick Pearson hit back with a good win over Mark Bedall 73-37 before Dave Williams restored the lead for the Bayley side defeating Mick Egan 62-22.

Jim Lewis captured the match with a score line of 44-16 playing P. Bufton, and Neil Pearson making the score respectable by beating Daz Rhodes 57-36.

Minnesota Fats G, who were away to Shifnal F, won that match 3-2. Shifnal claimed the first point of the match as D. Pye opened the scoring 48-22 against Craig Davies, and the next encounter looked to be a very close affair with Wayne Weeks beating D. Miller 62-52.

It was as equally close in the next frame with A. O’Donnell just edging out R. James 66-55, and J. Briscoe then levelled the match when Tony Marsh lost by 37 points to 64 points. The deciding match saw James Price gain victory over Chris Painter 57-23 and win the match for the Minnesota lads.

First Division

A David and Goliath match at Broseley saw the home side thump Maddocks C by four frames to one and enhance their position as champions this year.

First up was Carl Walker who managed to dispense of Graham Hoof in a crucible type atmosphere 61-17.

The second match started with Graham Long going in off the break to give Joe Oliver a lead. In a nip and tuck game, Joe once again had some bad luck and the white ball hit the bottom of the pocket after a cannon on the brown and he never recovered. Graham winning 74-30.

Next up was skipper Simon McLeod who found himself trailing to Jimmy Hill after the early exchanges and poor refereeing! But he soon found great potting form to make the match safe 56-23.

Mick Brezwyn and Steve Hassock then contested the “Match of the night” All seemed to be going well for the home player with some good potting and safety play that Steve could not match on the “tight” table. All came down to the colours and Mick had a 22 point advantage, a rare poor shot let in the ironman and he cleared up with a difficult cut-back on the black to steal a much needed point for the struggling Maddocks 46-51.

The final frame saw Simon Thomas take the fourth point by beating a fighting Billy Rushton 64-19.

With only three games remaining, this result has virtually handed the trophy to the engravers and place Broseley’s name upon it. Meanwhile the wooden spoon for Maddocks C is still looks a big possibility.

Local derby night in Dawley and it proved to be the usual entertaining evening we have been accustomed to.

First on, the in form Sean Nolan up against Matt Bailey. To be honest, what a frame this was, Sean never made one mistake, looked solid for 99% of the frame, but one half chance for the Little Dawley man proved costly for Sean as Matt rattled in a nice 54 break to put the frame out of reach for Dawley. Even though Sean made some excellent attempts at snookers, he unfortunately went in off on the pink whilst trying, making it 1-0 to Little Dawley.

Darren Pountney soon doubled this advantage with a comfortable win against Pete Nolan.

Little Dawley weren't to have it all their way as Mark Jones pulled one back for Dawley, but Tim Hicks will be kicking himself for not making it his after missing what seemed to be an easy pink for game, one he will remember for a while.

Chris Woods fought bravely against a player finding his form now after a long lay off, Lee Buttery was 17 down with one red left but played a few excellent snookers and went into the final colours all square. Albeit Chris had a half chance on the brown but when not taken, Lee cleared to black to make it 3-1 to Little Dawley.

Lee Elcock wrapped things up to close the gap on Anstice to 2 frames with a scrappy performance against an out of sorts Rick Bailey, 4-1 to Little Dawley.

Last years champions Anstice A were at home to the relegation haunted Bayley E, but the Bayley side will be well pleased with the two points taken from Anstice.

Ian Duffy and Shaun Harris secured the first two frames for Anstice as they disposed of A. O’Brien and Steve hoof. The second frame then saw K. Davies, who hasn’t played many games this season, beat Jamie Fallows in a tight match and that score line was 65-57 to Ken.

Keith Price was in no mood to concede another frame as he disposed of Dave France 56-26, and last up John Squires had a great result against Simon Yeates coming out on top by 63-35.

That result leaves Bayley A and Bayley E locked in joint third and fourth places from the bottom with Maddocks C a further 3 points below, and Audco certainly Down.

Matt Davies started the game off for Shifnal B in fantastic style against an unfortunate Paul Devey, with a clearance of 108. This sees him now holding the top three highest breaks this season.

In the next young A. Sparkes potted well against S. Collins to make the score line 2-0.

In the third frame it was a welcome return back to league action for Ray Evans, and even though he had a little bit of roll against D. Wilkie, he took his chances well to put the home side 3-0 up. This should have been 4, but with only 1 red left and 33 in front, Chris Petford let it slip against N. Wallcroft who snatched the frame to make it 3-1.

In the last frame a comprehensive victory for K. Blackham against D. Peplow brought some respectability to the score line to make it 3-2 to Shifnal, in what has been a nice season for them.

Maddocks A were at home to Shifnal A, and Daz Wincott opened the match but found John Fallows too much and lost the opener 55-14. Phil Davies, out of form a little lately, found Neil Price back to his best and Neil took the second game for Shifnal 78-17.

The revival then started for the home side as Lindsay Knox in spite of being 30 up for Shifnal, watched Ian Skelton knock in a 40 break and go on to win comfortably 75-46.

Leigh France then defeated Andy Easthope 55-27 to set up a decider for his dad playing Simon Biddulph. Dave came up with the goods and duly beat Simon 59-38 to claim the match.

Bayley A were at home to the hapless Audco side, and with some of the Audco lads still wearing their Cheltenham heads Bayley managed a 3-2 win.

Andy Phelan won his game with Arthur Burrows when they met for the second time this season before Chris Morgan-Adams playing his usual smash and grab game put A. Turner to sit 80-37. Mick Hughes, back into the fold after four years found Bob Mason too good for him and lost by 66-30.

Spencer Rowley took the next frame from Graham Darrell 56-33 before the star of the Audco side, Andy Kendrick beat Steve Fletcher 62-23.
