TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 15th February 2006

After last weeks hic-cup Broseley stormed back this week with a five nil whitewash of the Bayley E side showing their determination to take the title back to Broseley this season.

Simon Thomas set the ball rolling including a 36 break over Andy O’Brien and taking that frame 57-10. Graham Long, in cracking form this season, then stepped up to win his game against Steve Hoof to make it 2-0 to Broseley, 64-38.

The home advantage made no difference to the Bayley side as their next player M. Francis was also duly disposed of by Carl Walker in a low scoring frame 45-26. Steady Mick Brezwyn added the fourth frame beating John Squire, with Simon McLeod completing the rout 67-36 over Dave France.

Anstice A still chasing the leaders lost ground in spite of a good 4-1 away win at Dawley social. This report courtesy of Mark Jones.

Frame 1 saw Sean Nolan up against Jamie Fallows.
The opening exchanges saw Jamie get himself into a good lead of 37 points, only for Sean to claw his way back into contention with some gritty play. Going into the last six colours both players had chances but it was Sean who gained the advantage. Sean had a chance to win the frame on the blue but unfortunately missed the opportunity. Jamie then put Sean in a snooker, which turned the frame around because it amassed 20+ points, which meant Sean needed all three remaining colours to win the frame. Sean potted blue and pink to level the frame score at 69 all, but didn't have a shot on the black. After a couple of safety shots each, Jamie was left with a long black which he duly potted to take the frame with a score line of 76 points to 69.
Dawley A 0, Anstice `A' 1.

Frame 2 saw the same players come together as in the earlier match this season, as Chris Woods came up against Keith Price. Keith seamed in no mood to let the same outcome prevail this time around, as he potted well in the early stages and he got himself into a good lead which ''The Wooderman’’ never looked like threatening. Keith went on to make the match score 2 - 0 by taking the frame 56 points to 11.
Dawley A 0 Anstice A 2

Frame 3 saw the two captains come together as Mark Jones came up against Ian Duffy. Ian forged a good 32-point lead, and never looked in trouble after that. Ian went on to take the frame with a score line of 59 points to 25.
Dawley A 0, Anstice `A' 3.

Frame 4 saw Rick Bailey for Dawley up against Shaun Harris for Anstice. The early stages of this frame saw both players striving for an opening through good safety play, but it was Reckless Rick who got the first real chance. He duly obliged by compiling an excellent break, but while on 48 and a straight black beckoning, Rick mis-cued and jumped the black. However, his 48 break put him in a very strong position. Fortunately, Rick never left Shaun in a good position after the foul. Rick then continued to take points and got himself into a winning position where Shaun needed five snookers. Shaun began to claw his way back with some excellent shots, which put Rick in all sorts of trouble. Having got three of the five snookers required Shaun looked back in with a chance only for Rick to draw on his many years experience and close the frame out, giving Dawley their first point of the match with a frame score of 82 points to 46.
Dawley A 1 Anstice A 3

Frame 5 saw Grant Heighway for Dawley play Simon Yeats for Anstice. Simon potted well early doors and never looked in trouble as an out of sorts Grant struggled. Simon got himself into a good position where Grant needed several snookers, and Simon went on to win the final frame 65 points to 27 thus giving Anstice 4 valuable points in their chase to catch league leaders Broseley.

Match Score : Dawley A  1, Anstice  4.

Little Dawley A faltered a little in this weeks match with Shifnal B and Darren Pountney kindly sent this report.

Third playing fourth was always going to make the match a close encounter, and this it proved to be.

Shifnal B got the ball rolling in impressive form as Matt Davies duly disposed of Ade Henry in quick fire fashion with a lovely 53 clearance to make it 1-0, whilst on the middle table Lee Elcock managed to get the better of Aaron Sparkes to level things for Little Dawley in a scrappy encounter.

Nigel Stallard then took on Jesse Lowe and things looked good for the Little Dawley man going into the colours, as he needed only one ball. Three long shots proved to be the downfall for Little Dawley in this frame, as after missing them, Nigel rallied back to pip Jesse on the black to make it 2-1 to Shifnal.

Pretty much the same story in the next when Darren Pountney needed one colour from the 7 remaining to square things up, but after some great safety play, Rob Wright managed to clear an excellent last 3 colours to snatch frame four on the black, 3-1 to Shifnal B.

Matt Bailey got things back on track in his usual impressive way getting the better of Chris Petford to make the overall score 3-2 to Shifnal.

In the relegation concerned matches this week, Audco A were at home to Shifnal A, and although getting off to a good start when Andy Kendrick beat Lindsay Knox in a cracking game, Audco went on to lose 4-1.

Alan Turner gave Andy Easthope a good match but went down on the black and the writing still seems on the wall for the near doomed Audco!

One of the other teams near the bottom of the division, Maddocks C, played in a local derby with their Maddocks A side, and Jim Hill sent the following report.

Maddocks A won the battle of the Ironmen, in an entertaining fixture against their C team.

Phil Davis started the match off with a good performance, including a 29 break, to beat captain Graham Hoof.

Next up was a great show of potting from Steve Hassock and Darren Wincott. Darren took the early advantage with a superb red but let Steve back in and the baby of the team went on to knock a 45 break in and level the scores at one-all.

Leigh France played well and took a 40 point lead with some good play, but then seemed to fall away letting Joe Oliver back into the frame. Joe, with some good play went on to win 67-45 to put the C team in front.

The “battle of the baldies” started with Ian Skelton missing all the reds on the break and going in-off! This handed Jimmy Hill a lift and he went on to take an early lead of 20 but Ian soon found his range, and was unlucky with his position, and a couple of flukes from Jim. The match was nip n tuck until Jim went in-off the green leaving him needing snookers and he failed to recover losing 33-64.

All on the last frame, and Billy Rushton played Dave France for the outcome. In a cagey game, Bill took the early lead and kept France Snr at bay with some of the old form returning. Dave came back into the match to snatch victory for his “A” team with a good pot on the blue.

Maddocks C are still in a battle to avoid the drop but a 3-2 defeat to a top side can give them hope. Maddocks A look to be heading to a top 4 spot.

Anstice D were at home to the Bayley A side and promptly went three frames ahead until Chris-Morgan Adams beat the usually reliable Nigel Wallcroft 77-47 and gain a point for the Bayley side.

So at 3-1 to Anstice and that left Steve Fletcher to try and win the last point against Keith Blackham. However this wasn’t to be as Keith came out the victor 77-19.

So, at the moment it looks like a battle between Maddocks C and Bayley A to decide who will be joining Audco in the second division.

Second Division

Anstice C maintain a seven point lead this week even though they lost their home game against Codden B.

John Jones lost a very close game against A. Jones 58-56 before Steve camp pulled one back for the Anstice by beating A. Garmson 64-42. Andy Elliot then put the Anstice in front whilst having a 33 break during his game with Mark Wall, that score, 70-30.

Steve Downes then levelled the match beating Mike Musgrave 49-12 to set up the decider between Nick Oakley and Nick Pearce. That game ended in favour of Nick Pearce with a 63-30 win.

Bayley F at home missed their chance to make some ground up after losing 3-2 to the “fighting for survival” Dawley B side. Highlight of this match was a superb break of 70 from Richie Hulme, but fair play to the Dawley lads, they are making a determined bid to stay in this division.

Codden C beat Shifnal F 3-2 at home, and with L.D.S.G recording a 4-1 result against Anstice B, are now locked with equal points, joint third.

Second Club A leap frogged halfway up the table with a fine 5-0 win over the Bayley D side and in another local derby match Minnesota Fats A gained a 3-2 win over their G side and find that they are separated by just one point.

Third Division

Just one point separates the top three teams in this division although they have all played a different amount of games.

Bayley Q had a great chance to become outright leaders of the division when they met the struggling Hadley A side. The Bayley team got off to a good start, especially with Chris Bates beating Hadley’s star player Kev Whitehead on the black.

Wins from Rob Cook and Chris Fletcher took the Bayley side 3-0 up, but the Hadley boys pulled two points back courtesy of “Tugboat” Benting beating Richard Tranter 53-41 and the recent birthday boy, Iain Atkinson taking the last frame against Steve Weatherall 59-23.

Bayley B visited the LDS B side where they gained a valuable 4-1 result which gives them a great chance of going up this season if they continue this form.

Shifnal D, at home to Maddocks B managed a 3-2 victory although Doug Morrey got the Maddocks team off to a good start with victory over Terrie Askew in a high scoring game, 76-65.

Sanjay Chauhan got the better of Wally Harper 53-26 before Peter Wharton took the second point for Shifnal with a comprehensive win of 50-8 playing Les Hicks. Barrie Easthope made it 3-1 by defeating Steve Pritchard 45-30 and Martin Colley got the last point to be had for Maddocks by beating Arthur Aston 44-33.

Comrades A seem to be settling nicely into our league and this week Newport D had to make the long journey to Bridgnorth.

In the opening frame S. Preece put Comrades ahead in a close fought match beating A. Davies 52-45. Richard Goldie then pulled one back for Newport in a low scoring game, but still very close. 30-29.

S. Jones took the third frame comfortably to put Comrades back in front over N. Simpson, 69-23. C. Crook secured the match win for the Bridgnorth team 54-20 against John Yapp before Les Stirling defeated G. Young 46-36, and take a second point for Newport.

Hopefully, we will be able to avoid so many byes next season now that the Wellington Snooker Hall has opened. I will be inviting them and others to enter the Telford Snooker League next season.
