Team Knockout
We start this weeks round up with the match between Little
Dawley B and Bayley F, the Bayley team having to concede 75
points. The first match saw Pete Clarke come up against an
inform Richie Hulme, both players potted well and Pete did
well to lose by only 26 points. In the next Phil Cottey played
superbly to beat Tom Maxfield, yet again it was a high scoring
match with good potting from both players, Phil eventually
winning by 17 points to bring the handicap back in LDS favour.
Tom Wotherspoon took the next beating Chris Shaw by 11 points,
and with Colin Gittus then adding another 24 to Little Dawleys’s
total with a good win over Paul Maxfield, it put LDS B into
a strong position. Eddie Whitehead made a valiant attempt
at trying to retrieve the total, but found Simon Evans in
resolute mood to see his team through to the next round.
At Shifnal, The D side came through with a very good win
over division one side Dawley A. In the first, Sean Nolan
pulled back 63 points against T Askew to reduce the arrears,
but Sanjay Chauhan then put the tie back in favour of the
D side with a good win over Mark Jones, 72 to 36, in the next
Pete Nolan overcame Arthur Aston, but it left the Dawley captain
Rick Bailey with over 100 to pull back in the last frame.
This he failed to do, with Barrie Easthope winning 41 points
to 12.
The ever dependable Matty Davies set Shifnal B off to a great
start. He potted well in the first to defeat Ian Ferriday
by 102 to 26, this included a break of 85 in which Matty was
unlucky not to complete his century break, narrowly failing
to pot the black whilst on 85. In the next game young Aaron
Sparkes potted well to defeat Lloyd Giles 61 to 46, putting
the Shifnal side into a lead on the handicap. Rob Wright kept
the momentum up with a fine win over K Morris 61 to 44, and
in the next Chris Petford lost narrowly by a single point
to R Smith, leaving the Shifnal men with a 42 point lead going
into the last, with Dave “the rock” Peplow defending
that lead against Karl Owen, it was only going to be a difficult
match, which ended in a draw 41 points each.
At the Anstice there was a derby clash between the B and
C teams. With the C side flying high at the top of division
one they had to give their B side a 70 point start, and things
didn’t go well for the C team when Noel Stones took
the first against John Jones, winning by 83 points and extending
the B teams handicap. In the next S Smallwood narrowly beat
S Cap 55 points to 53, and with the B sides John Darrock beating
A Elliot by another 63 points, which included a very nice
35 break, things where starting to look for bad for the C
team. M Musgrave then brought some parity back beating G Hammond
by 76 points to 27, and this left Nick Oakley with the unenviable
task of trying to beat Mick Cahill by over 150 points. This
was never going to happen, and the old fox Mick potted well
to see his side comfortably through to the next round.
It was different news for the Anstice A side who had to play
a strong Little Dawley A side, both level from the handicap.
It showed how evenly the sides were matched, when in the first
frame Darren Pountney (league treasurer) narrowly lost out
to J Fallows by the narrowest of margins 62 to 61. In the
next, S Harris then played some superb snooker to put the
Anstice team into a 57 point lead beating L buttery 84 points
to 28. Lee Elcock then reduced the Little Dawley sides deficit
when beating R Wade 55 point to 30, and in the next Keith
“max” Price potted superbly to beat A Henry by
79 points to 21, increasing the Anstice teams lead and giving
his team a 90 point lead going into the last. Even though
M Bailey is well capable of achieving that in one visit, his
opponent S Yeats never gave him a chance, and took the frame
39 points to 22.
Audco lost to Maddocks B. Kenny played really well against
Wally Harper and was 40 in front, only to go in off the potted
brown and see Wally then take brown, blue, and pink. That
made a serious change in scores. Doug Morrey then played well
against Alan Turner, Alan took the frame on the black to win
by 9 points. Graham beat Les Hicks by 43 so the Audco were
in with a chance. Unfortunately Shandy was beaten by 45 points
against Steve Pritchard, leaving Micky B playing last, 88
points behind John Archer. Mick played so well that at the
nearest point he only wanted 3 snookers, but John went on
to win.
Comrades A the newest addition to the league, lost out to
a very good Anstice D.
Consolation Cup
Maddocks C used home advantage to beat Shifnal F in a great
cup match that went down to the brown ball after the ironmen
gave the visitors a 40 start. The evening started in good
spirits with Fred Harper trying out his old jokes to put the
teams in a better mood…but to no avail! The match got
underway with Joe Oliver coming from behind with some controlled
potting to get the better of Dave Miller and claw back 13
points of the aggregate. “The boy” Tommy Hampson
then played well with some good long shots to get the deficit
closer, beating Rich James by 29. This left the Oakengates
side only 2 points up after 2 games.
Skippers Graham Hoof and Chris Painter then tried the best
to take the initiative. Graham played a good tactical game
only for Chris to take the frame by 3 points to put them back
in front by ONE point overall. Dave Pye then started with
some good solid potting to get in front of Jimmy “no
relation to the real one” Hill, but in a tussle, the
home side man managed to come back and win by 17 points after
a fluked blue. This left Steve Hassack to take on Fred Harper
only 16 points to the good. Fred tried hard to pull his team
back but, like his jokes, failed to make too much of an impression
(sorry FH!). Steve then knocked in a top break of 38 to tie
up the match and see the Maddocks team home.
Bayley D entertained the 2nd Club B from Trench, conceding
their visitors 30 points on the handicap. Things didn’t
start well for the Bayley side when Tom Firmstone played well
to defeat Craig Whitehead 76 points to 24, extending his sides
lead. In the next frame, Toby Welsh added to his sides tally
beating Darren Rhodes, adding another 34 points. Paul Crooks
kept up the 2nd Clubs winning ways by overcoming Brian Aberdeen
in the next, and with further wins from Dave Welsh over Dave
Williams, and Neil Robinson beating the D sides captain Dave
Dudley, 2nd Club went through comfortably to the next round.
At Minnesota Fats, their A team had a great win over Shifnal
A. The Shifnal side had to give their 2nd division opponents
a 95 point start, and things didn’t go well in the first
frame with Mick Pearson beating an out of sorts John Fallows
59 to 35. In the second frame it was a welcome return to the
league for Neil Price, starting his first match since his
back troubles, and he started with a win, playing well to
defeat Mick Egan 58 points to 18. Linsay Knox then pulled
back another 36 points in the next by defeating Graeme Corten
84 points to 48, and with Andy Easthope winning by another
26 points against Kirk Stevenson, it left the Shifnal side
only 17 points behind going into the last. But Neil Pearson
was in no mood to let his side down, and played a very good
game against Simon Biddulph to put the Minnesota side through.
At Little Dawley the G side had to play Division One team
Bayley A, who have been struggling to find their feet back
in division one this season. Things started well for the Bayley
team with Arthur Burrows beating T Bell 42 points to 30, and
in the next frame, R Withington narrowly beat Bob Mason by
39 points to 32. The turning point in the match was N Morris’s
superb win over Spencer Rowley, he potted very well and beat
an out of form Spencer by 84 points to 33. In the next, Steve
“Shrewsbury Towns roving report “ Fletcher played
well against an in form G Wiley, beating him 68 - 51. This
left Chris Morgan-Adams 64 points behind going into the last
frame, and R Leneveu didn’t allow Chris to play his
game and ran out the winner by 53 points to 45, seeing his
side through.
At the Coddon club, the C side entertained a Hadley A side
who are hovering just below the bottom of division three.
The Coddon team had to give away a 95 point start on the handicap,
and they started brightly with Sef Tusel winning the first
against the in form Kev Whitehead. Danny Weaver then continued
Coddon’s good start beating Gareth Hughes, and Roy Francis
then stepped up for the Hadley side and put them back in control
of this topsy turvy match with a brilliant potting display
against the unlucky D Ballard. Ray Whitehead reduced the handicap
back for Coddon, this included some nice safety play combined
with good pots to leave his team some 98 points behind going
into the last. Despite a brave fight back from D Holmes in
the last against Iain Atkinson, it was the Hadley boys who
progress into the next round.
Bayley B lost to Maddocks A and Newport D beat Bayley E.
Will captains please NOTE that there are competition match
cards this season with a different address on, these ones
must be used for all future Team and Consolation Cup
matches.
