This weeks matches started in a sombre and reflective
mood as the players from all sides held a minutes silence
before their matches, in order to pay their respects to Nev
Whitehead who has sadly passed away recently. He was a great
servant and friend to the league for many years and will be
sorely missed by us all.
I start with the match between Anstice A versus Minnesota
fats A, with the Anstice team having to pull back a 110 start,
Shaun Harris made a good start regaining 59 back in the first
frame against M Pearson, with further wins from Jamie Fallows
and Keith Price Anstice A were now firmly into pole position.
Simon Yeates and Richy Wade (Bossman) carried on the good
potting to see Anstice ease through to the next round.
In the match between Minnesota fats G and Broseley A, it
was Minnesota Fats from Div 2 that outplayed their Division
1 opponents to go through, winning the first four frames and
adding to their handicap lead, which was fortunate as the
Minnesota side didn’t field a fifth player.
In the derby match between 2nd club A and 2nd club B, it
was the A side who came out on top, man of the match for 2nd
club A, Ian Ferriday who won the 1st frame by 75, pulling
back the handicap and putting his team in front, with further
wins for K Mears and R Smith consolidating their lead, before
consolation wins for P Crooks and N Robinson, helped narrow
the gap.
Out of the three Little Dawley sides who played at home only
the B side managed a win, with a superb performance against
Div 1 opponents Maddocks A, who needed to pull back a handicap
of 145, they started well with Phil Davies and Ian Eldridge
pulling back 87 in the first 2 frames, leaving them only 57
behind, but with a great win from Colin Gittus over Darren
Wincott and Snowy Darrock overcoming Ian Skelton they put
the little dawley side 75 up with one frame left, and Simon
Evans made no mistake for the little dawley team with another
fine win over Dave France, thus putting the LDS B team through
to the main comp.
The LDS D side also came up against first division opposition,
but not with the same outcome, as Anstice D played well to
see them through to the next round proper, they were joined
by their B side, who had a much more close encounter, as LDS
G lost narrowly by 5 points to the Anstice B team, with wins
from Noel Stones, J Darrock and Stew Wimbush helping put the
B side in front on the handicap, but a good win from Graham
Copson then put the little dawley side back in front by 10
points, leaving Mick Cahill for the anstice team to win 50
points to 35 points, putting the anstice team through by 5
points.
It was different news for the LDS A side as they went through
smoothly against a very good Shifnal A side, Matt Bailey took
the first against John Fallows, with John leading the first
part of the frame only for Matt to have a 35 clearance and
win by 29 points, in the next Ade Henry found some of his
old form to beat Linsay Knox by 36 points and with Lee Elcock
beating Simon Biddulph by 48 points, which included a very
good 50 break, it put the Little Dawley men into a commanding
position, Andy Easthope and Angus Way both won the next two
frames, but they couldn’t pull back the points needed
to win the match.
It was different news for the Shifnal B team though, playing
last years winners Bayley Q, Matt Davies started off for Shifnal,
beating Chris Durham by 57 points, in which Matty have a nice
68 break, in the next Aaron Sparkes beat Chris Bates 65 points
to 22, leaving the Shifnal team 20 points behind, Dave Peplow
then reduced the arrears by another 8 points, beating Chris
Fletcher, Chris Petford then put the Shifnal team in front
for the first time, beating Rob Cook by some 38 points, giving
Ron Wright a 26 start in the last frame, in which Rich Tranter
made a valiant effort to claw back those points, only failing
narrowly, to leave the Shifnal side going through by just
17 points.
Shifnal F made the short trip to Dawley, to play the A team
and had an 80 start, but after losing the first four frames
to the Dawley side with wins for Sean Nolan, Mark Jones, Pete
Nolan and Chris Woods, it left Chris Painter 67 behind in
the last frame, and even though he beat Rick Bailey it was
not enough to put the Shifnal team through.
Dawley B team also notched up a win, this time against a
brave Newport B team, with A Davies for the Newport side up
against Paul Harper, he did extremely well to lose by only
21 points, then K Jones and N Brazenell put the Dawley side
40 points in front on the handicap, and with another win for
league sponsor, Barry Roden, putting them further in front,
it was going to be a tough task for Les Stirling in the last.
He did beat A Jones, but not by the required amount, putting
the Dawley B team through.
Audco A also join the other winners into the main competition
after a good win over Hadley A, highlight of the match was
Andy Kendrick’s 59 break, other winners were Comrades
A who beat Bayley D, congratulations to the Comrades team
on their first appearance in the cup, Shifnal D beat Maddocks
C, Anstice C overcame the division 1 team Bayley A, in the
derby match at the Bayley between the B and F team it was
the F team who came out on top, Coddon B had a good victory
over the Bayley E team and finally Maddocks B won away at
Coddon C.
Please note this season that competition match cards are
to be used and not league match cards.
The second round has been drawn and these are the matches
to be played on Wednesday 30th November 2005.
