Team Knockout Final
This years final saw a repeat of the 2003/4 final between
Anstice A and Shifnal B, and this time things didn’t
start well for Shifnal, going into the first frame with 25
point start on the handicap.
Shaun Harris started the brighter of the two, and although
no big breaks were made, he kept piling on the points with
little response from the Shifnal man. Chris Petford had his
chances after a couple of excellent long reds, but missed
the important colours to put the pressure on and eventually
lost the frame. This put Anstice ahead on the handicap by
50 points.
In the second frame, Aaron Sparkes started well for Shifnal,
opening up a twenty point advantage. Jamie Fallows responded
for Anstice, and in a nip and tuck match things turned the
way of the Anstice man when he laid Aaron in a snooker, which
he failed to hit and gave away 20 points in fouls. Jamie went
on to clear the remaining colours and put Anstice 90 points
up.
Rob Wright then faced Keith Price hoping to stop the Anstice
teams tracks. This turned out to be a frame of high quality,
with both players potting superbly throughout the game and
compiling breaks of 30 plus. Yet again it was the Anstice
player who took the all important colours, to further advance
his sides lead on the handicap.
This left captain Ian Duffy going on in the 4th frame 100
points plus up against Shifnal’s Dave Peplow. This was
always going to be a tough frame for Dave, especially with
Ian having such a good lead and the luxury of going for his
shots. And so it proved, Dave valiantly tried to stem the
tide, but to no avail, as Ian potted comfortably throughout
the frame and added another 73 points to the lead.
Even with Matthew Davies going on last for Shifnal against
Simon Yeats, it was too much of an ask trying to pull back
the 197 points deficit. Matt eventually went onto to win the
last frame of the evening, in what was the only win for the
Shifnal side on the night.
Congratulations go to the Anstice team, who played well throughout
the match and are this seasons Team Knockout champions
Consolation Cup Final
Division one team Maddocks A had to concede 125 on the handicap
to division three’s 2nd Club B, and things started well
for the Maddocks team, with Ian Eldridge stepping up in the
first frame to put in a very determined effort to reduce the
deficit by some 67 points versus Neil Robinson.
Next up for the division one side was Ian Skelton, fresh
from his trebles final victory on Tuesday, he started the
frame off very well. He had reached a break of 61, then as
he tried to roll the blue into the corner bag he got a massive
kick, unluckily putting himself out of position. He still
went on to take the frame by 93 points versus an unlucky Bob
Lane, this put Maddocks firmly in control of the match.
Tom Firmstone did respond for the 2nd Club in the following
frame, with some fine potting and safety play to defeat the
Maddocks captain Dave France by the narrowest of margins,
but that was to be the only victory for the Trench lads on
the night.
In the fourth frame Phil Davis beat 2nd Clubs Mike Thompson
by 30 points, leaving Toby Welsh having to pull back 65 points
in the last against Leigh France. This was always going to
be tough, with the Maddocks man going on to win the frame
48 points to 25.
Congratulations to Maddocks on winning the match. It was
a good week for Leigh, Phil and Ian Skelton, following on
from their trebles win earlier in the week. Congratulations
also to the divisional winners, in division one, Broseley
A, in division two Anstice C, and in division three 2nd Club
Trench B.
