In the first division, Shifnal B at home this week, took
on Maddocks A. The first match produced some good snooker
when Matt Davies played Ian Eldridge. Both players were playing
quite well, until Matt cleared up the colours towards the
end of the frame, and took the first point for Shifnal. Ray
Evans up next, and after a scrappy game finally produced some
of his old form, playing well to take the next point for Shifnal
giving them a 2-0 lead. Chris Petford fought another close
match and came out the victor against Phil Davies beating
him on the black.
3-0 up and Nigel Stallard then faced Ian Skelton. Nigel only
had one shot and “Skelly” cleared up with a 73
break missing a pink off its spot to make it 79. After pulling
one back, this must have inspired Dave France to take the
next frame to leave a one point margin overall and in spite
of a 40 break by Dave, I am told, quote “no words can
describe the length of this match ”.
The Shifnal A side also won 3-2 away to little Dawley A,
with the last game being decided on the black, and Phil Whitby
losing out to Darren Pountney.
Codden B visited champions Anstice A and came away with two
good points, with Ian Duffy still in winning form, along with
team mates. Shawn Harris and Neil price, who also had a whitewash
victory over Mark Wall.
Anstice D, who have had a fine start to their campaign recorded
another 4-1 win over Minnesota Fats A, with Neil Pearson being
the only winner for Minnesota, and having a break of 29 on
his way to victory over Nigel Wallcroft.
Bayley E who are taking time to find their best form also
lost 3-2 at home to Dawley A.
In the second division, the Second Club Trench may have been
placed too high in the league, as they went down 4-1 at home
to Bayley A, and now are placed at the foot of the table while
Bayley A now find themselves at the top of the table.
Anstice C are also emulating their rivals in the first division
by climbing to third place after a superb 5-0 over Little
Dawley Social G. Mid table Shifnal F had a 3-2 win over Codden
C with Fred Harper making a winning debut for his team.
Dawley B move into second place after another good performance,
taking all five points from their match at home against Maddocks
B. Meanwhile the Maddocks C team managed to win against consistent
side Bayley F by the odd point, and there are only two points
separating them in the table.
Now to the third division where Minnesota Fats C gained a
good win over Anstice B with Tom Firmstone capturing the first
frame with the help of a good 25 break clearance.
Dave Welsh and Noel Stones were involved in a scrappy game,
until Noel produced a 36 break, which left him in control
of the match to come out a comfortable winner.
Bob Lane potted steadily in his frame against John Darrock
to win, whilst John’s team mate, George Hammond had
a close match with Toby Welsh, finally winning on the pink.
The last game also produced a tight finish with Neil Robinson
winning the frame and match on the black ball.
The old Wellington Billiard Hall F team, now playing as Bayley
Q, lost at home to their well-known ex. companions Wellington
Billiard Hall B by the odd frame.
The other Bayley teams had mixed fortunes as Bayley B away
to Newport British legion lost 3-2 and meanwhile at home,
Bayley D entertained Little Dawley Social B on the back of
three straight wins. Craig Whitehead ended Colin Gittuss’
superb start to the season after a long fought battle in which
Craig won by 55 points to 42. Colin took some superb long
shots and will certainly soon be back in the winners enclosure.
Dave Dudley showed the form that won him the individual title
from this division last year, with a solid frame against Gary
Clements. The third frame saw Dave Williams take a firm hold
of the match by beating Tommy Wotherspoon and giving him four
wins out of four games. Simon Evans had a fine opportunity
to take a point back for his side but went in off the pink
leaving his side 4-0 down.
The scene was set for a full house for Bayley as the ever
dependable Jim Lewis, a former John Bethell finalist came
up against Craig Darrock, but unfortunately an under fire
spluttering Lewis came second best by 48 to 40 points.
