TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 24th November 2004

Shifnal D still top division three this week, even though they lost whilst at home playing Little Dawley B. Little Dawley opened their account when Gary Clements got the first point on the board for Little Dawley, having a 23 break against Terry Askew in the first frame; that score 50-15. In the next frame Sanjay Chauhan, who is having a cracking season to date, remained undefeated when he beat Rob Barlowe 60-41. Peter Wharton then took the third frame against Colin Gittus, whose early form this season was very good, 77-50. The next frame saw Phil Cottey draw level for the visitors and secured a comfortable win over Geoff French 51-7. In the final frame, Simon Evans also had a good win against Barrie Easthope 70-38. Although the top three places remain in the same order, Little Dawley B have gained a point on the Bayley D this week.

Bayley D also suffered a loss when they visited Newport British Legion and came home with just two points. However, I’m sure they will not be too disappointed with this match as two of their losing frames were decided on the black!

Bayley B had an easy win over Hadley although conceding one frame to their opponents where Richard Goldie was the only winner for the visiting team, Hadley.

Anstice B were at home to the Wellington Billiard Hall B-side who offered little resistance in this match, as Anstice B won 5-0. Roy Francis was the only player to show any form and lost on the black to Stewart Wimbush. This win moves Anstice B into joint fourth place in decision three.

Minnesota Fats C remain in the same position in the table despite a 4-1 victory over Little Dawley J side. The only winner from Little Dawley J being new signing, M. Laugharne who beat Neil Robinson.

New side in this division Little Dawley X are acquitting themselves very well to date, and won their match with Bayley Q by three frames to two. This match went to a decider where Jason Hickman overcame Richard Tranter on the black in the last frame. Although dropping a couple of places in the table only one point separates little Dawley X from the three teams above them.

There’s not much change in the second division this week as Bayley A kept their relentless pursuit of the second division title well within their sights. Bayley recorded a 4-1 result at home to Codden C with the best winner of the evening being Steve Fletcher who won by a convincing score line, 109-16. I’m sure Steve will be looking forward to first division snooker again next season!

Bayley F, although not making ground on their counterparts are still producing good results, and this week was no different as they beat Minnesota Fats G 3-2.Young Tom Maxfield had a 24 break in his match with Aaron O’Donnell and apart from the first frame which saw Eddie Whitehead beat Wayne Weeks by 70-7, the three remaining frames were all won on the black ball.

Dawley Social B despite losing at home to Shifnal F 3-2, remain in third position in the table. Chris Painter maintained his one hundred percent record by beating Barry Roden in the fourth frame. Fred Harper also a new signing for this team made it four out of five frames to date by beating Alex Jones on the black in the last frame.

Maddocks B moved up the table two spots this week with a 3-2 win over Little Dawley G while their team mates Maddocks C with the same result over Anstice C stay in fourth place.

The Maddocks C team continued their winning ways over Anstice C when Joe Oliver with an early break of 26 over his opponent, secured the first point of the evening for the foundry men. Although his adversary, Jason Mills fought back to get a snooker on the brown to enable him to have a chance of winning the match, it was to no avail as he went down 75-34. Bill (Gritter) Rushton made it 2-0 with some of his old form of fine safety and potting to restrict Kevin Smith to just 18 points. Madeleys Steve Camp then hit back to make it 2-1 by beating Dave Thomas, which included an excellent clearance from the brown onwards to win his game. Andy Elliot squared the match after his tussle with Jim Hill. Finally, Nev Whitehead secured the match for Maddocks with a 58-13 win over Mick Musgrave, where Nev will be the first to admit that lady luck was on his side on more than one occasion.

The Second Club got their third win of the season when they were at home to Maddocks D and won 3-2. This brought Maddocks down to third from the bottom of division three and saw the Second Club become joint bottom with Little Dawley G. L. Watson started with a win against Mick Wincott 45-24 as did his team mate K. Mears taking the second frame 63-43. Brendon Wincott then hit back by beating Ian Ferriday 84-42. Maddock’s comeback didn’t stop there as Graham Arnold then won the next frame on the black. So to the decider where Larry Giles won the match for the Second Club by defeating Fred Spragg 62-18.

In the first division, Anstice A at home this week, increased their lead at the top by one point over Maddocks A, after a spirited show from Minnesota Fats A, who managed to take two points from the champions. Shawn Harris made a 53 break against Harry Jones in the first frame followed by Neil Price who won the second game for Anstice 63-19 playing Mick Egan. The next frame saw Mick Pearson take a frame for Minnesota when he beat Keith Price 64-41.Ian Duffy won his game comfortably against Kirk Stevenson, but in the last game Neil Pearson beat Nick Oakley by 70-26. A very good performance from Minnesota Fats.

Maddocks A visited Broseley on the back of a 4-1 win last week against Shifnal A, but found Broseley to be more formidable opponents, and left with just two points. Maddocks started very well when Ian Eldridge who is playing very well recently beat G. Long by 65-14. Next to play was Phil Humphries who beat Leigh France 70-45.The next frame was a closer affair when Dave France lost on the black to Carl Walker. Phil Davies then produced a good frame by beating Richie Hulme to set up a decider in the final game. The usual stalwart of Maddocks, Ian Skelton didn’t get much of a chance after Mick Brezwyn knocked in a 50 break, and so it ended with a 3-2 win for Broseley.

Shifnal A continued their indifferent displays of late, when they were at home playing Dawley Social. John Fallows got Shifnal off to a good start when he beat Pete Nolan in the first frame 54-20. Next to play was Angus Way whose form is faltering a little at the moment, and he was soundly beaten by Mark Jones 75-31. Lindsay Knox for Shifnal followed the same route as he lost to Chris Woods 51-13. Rick Bailey then came up against Andy Easthope and found him to be on song so to speak, and Rick lost 61-18. In the last frame Phil Whitby for Shifnal, lost his fifth frame in a row when Sean Nolan won the last frame for Dawley 58-16.

Little Dawley A, still locked in joint position in the table with Shifnal A, suffered the same result 3-2 even though having the home advantage. Lee Elcock took the first point of the evening playing Darren Wilkie, 53-27. Darren Pountney played in second position but lost on the black to Nigel Wallcroft who is going quite well this season. Jesse Lowe put Little Dawley ahead again in the next frame, also beating Phil Reynolds on the black, that score 56-48. Matt Bailey then lost to Keith Blackham 84-37 leaving Paul Devey to complete the win for Anstice D by beating Ade Henry 53-42. A very close match!

The Wellington A side managed to record a 3-2 win over local opponents Bayley E, although this match went to the wire with a thrilling decider played by Andy Kendrick’s and John Squire. The game could have gone either way but after several safety shots, John left the black over the hole for Andy, and the score line ended 66-64.

Codden B gained a 3-2 win over Shifnal B, so both of these teams remain in the same position in the table. Shifnal did gain a point on Dawley A to move into the joint second position. Having played Codden earlier in the season I have to say that Codden seem to be playing quite well without gaining the points in their matches.
