TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 17th November 2004

A slight change in the top of the table this week as joint leaders Anstice A and Maddocks A both secured good results.

Anstice A were away to Dawley Social club and took all five points, although the games between Ian Duffy versus Sean Nolan and Rick Bailey playing Keith Price were both close affairs being decided on the black ball.

According to the score card it looks as though Maddocks A had an exciting match playing Shifnal A. Maddocks who had the home advantage started very well when Ian Eldridge beat John Fallows 75-1. This included a break of 44 for Ian during the game. Angus Way produced a 35 break in his game with Phil Davies and won the frame, but this was to be the only point gained by Shifnal A during the match. The next game was decided on the black when Leigh France defeated Phil Whitby, and then Darren Wincott got the better of Andy Easthope in the fourth frame. Another break of 32 by Ian Skelton in the last frame saw him beat Lindsay Knox 72-34. This now puts two points between Anstice and Maddocks at the top of the table.

A lack lustre Wellington Billiard Hall visited Anstice D, but did manage to gain two points, virtue of Graham Darrel who remains undefeated so far this season, and Andy Kendricks. Darren Wilkie, Keith Blackham and Phil Reynolds all won for Anstice D.

Minnesota Fats A were well out of their depth this week when they visited Shifnal B who recorded a 5-0 win. Matt Davies had a fifty break against Mick Egan, but I do hope Minnesota Fats see the season out in this division, especially as they were thrown in at the deep end to take the place of Codden A, who dropped out at the last minute.

Bayley E, after a fine win at Shifnal A last week, played Broseley at home, and lost their match 3-2. Andy O’Brien started well by beating Carl walker 69-32 with the help of a 32 break in the first game, then Steve Hoof, who has only won one game so far this season, lost to Paul Humphries on the black. I’m sure Steve will soon find his form, which seems to have deserted him at the moment. Andy Jones then regained the lead when he beat G. Long to make it 2-1 to the home side. John Squire then lost to Mick Brezwyn 72-9 with Mick having a break of 33 in that frame. The final frame saw Broseley take the match when Simon Mcloud beat Dave France 70-31.

Another match decided on the last frame in this weeks first division took place at Codden, when Codden B played little Dawley A. The first frame went to Jamie fallows when he defeated Andy Jones, who played so well last week. That score 65-39 to Jamie. A complete turn around in the next, when Lee Elcock failed to score a point, losing by 65-0 to Simon Yeats. Codden than took the lead for the first time when Steve Downes beat Jesse Lowe 64-48. The match was all square at the end of the next frame as Matt Bailey won comfortably against Mark Wall. So to the last frame, where the joint highest break this week was had by Darren Pountney. He made no bones about winning the deciding frame, and ran out winning 98-4 against Nick Pearce. Darren knocked in a 53 break during that game and consequently won the match for Little Dawley A.

In the second division Bayley A maintain their five-point advantage over Bayley F after visiting little Dawley G where they gained a 4-1 result. Steve Fletcher, one of the few unbeaten players in the league, also notched a 53 break in his game against Rob Withington winning 85-23, although the break came in the last frame, Steves team mates had already won the match after Chris Morgan Adams took the first frame against Graham Wiley 69-31. Little Dawley were then given some hope when D. Levenue beat A.Burrows 55-22. in the second frame, but their hopes were soon dashed as Steve Nichols beat Graham Copson 72-34, and Spencer Rowley beat R. Levenue 67-51.

Bayley F also had the same score line in their match when they visited Anstice C. Bayley F moved the Anstice team down the table one notch with their good 4-1 win away from home, and are still keeping the pressure up on their stable mates Bayley A.

Minnesota G at home to Maddocks B won the match in the final frame. Minnesota G started brightly when Aaron O’Donnell beat Wally Harper 64-30 in the opening frame. John Archer then pulled a point back by beating James price 44-25. Next up, the captain Wayne Weeks played Nigel White to recapture the lead and won 67-35. Les Hicks then levelled the match for Maddocks B having a 26 break during his win over Craig Davies. Finally Tony Marsh overcame Tony O’Neil to take the match for Minnesota in the final frame. The placings in the table for these teams are now level, due to an earlier frame in the season being declared void!

Maddocks C remain in fourth place in the table although gaining one point on the third placed Dawley B. Maddocks C visited Shifnal F and came away with a fine 4-1 win. This was Maddock's C second win of the season. Joe Oliver drew first blood for the foundry men when he defeated Kev Dickenson 75-46. Jim Hill followed suit with a 45-13 win over John Briscoe. Shifnal's Chris Painter then kept his one hundred percent record when an early break of 23 put him in control of the match. However his opponent Dave Thomas stuck to his task well and could have won with the last remaining four colours on the table. Unfortunately a foul on the black put paid to Dave’s chances. Bill Rushton then clinched the match against youngster Jake Dickenson 67-27 and Nev Whitehead made it 4-1 after winning his frame playing Fred Harper. This was no easy game even though Nev started with a 24 break, as Fred chased him all the way to the colours. After hitting a snooker that Nev laid, it left a simple pink for Nev to pot and win his game 58-41.

Although losing at home to Codden C, Maddocks B move themselves one spot up the table this week. A. Hedgecock for Codden won the first frame against M. Wincott 55-7, and then Fred Spragg playing D. Holmes levelled the match by winning 62-49. Maddocks then took the lead as Ken Davies had a comfortable win over D. Weaver 80-33. Matt Bothwell for the vistors, then levelled the match again with a 95-37 score line over Graham Arnold. The last frame couldn’t have been tighter as Ray Whitehead beat Roy Adams on the black to give his Codden side the victory.

Dawley B, away to The Second Club Trench, have gone from joint second in the division this week to third place, after gaining a 3-2 victory over the Second Club. The Second Club gained ground on the three teams directly above them, and although losing this match 3-2 can take heart from an encouraging encounter with Dawley B.

The third division this week saw Hadley A lose their third match this season 5-0, when they were hosts to Shifnal D. Shifnal raced into a 4-0 lead until any resistance at all was shown by Hadley, and alyhough Dave Barnett did his best to secure a point against Barrie Easthope he lost the frame on the black. This means that Shifnal D have gained a further point over Bayley D giving them a three point lead in this division.

Bayley D are keeping the pressure up on Shifnal D as they recorded a 4-1 win at home to the Minnesota Fats C team. Paul Crooks took the first frame for Minnesota Fats 54-28 when he played Dave Williams, but that was to be the only point of the evening as Bayley D took the next four frames.

Bayley B and Little Dawley X are still locked in the same positions in the table as they both had 3-2 results in their favour.

Little Dawley X were at home to Newport B who have been playing quite steadily this season, but found the Little Dawley side too strong as the first three frames went to the Dawley side. Allan Davies stopped the charge by beating Ryan Jackson 64-17 and then Les Stirling, also playing very well this season beat Phil Padmore on the black to take two points from the match. In fact the first six places in division three remain the same as last week!

Bayley Q move up one place in the table this week although they lost to Little Dawley B. Chris Durham won the first frame on the black for the home side 47-44 but then Little Dawley emulated that result with Simon Evans Beating Chris Bates, also on the black, 69-61. Talk about close games; the next frame saw Steven Weatherall lose to Colin Gittus 55-46, yet another frame decided on the black ball. The next frame was a little more clear cut as Phil Cottey beat Chris Fletcher 73-20 to give his side the match. In the last frame Snowy Darrock lost to Richard Tranter by 41 points to 59.

Finally this week the Wellington Billiard Hall B team who have suffered two back-to-back 5-0 defeats brought back a little credibility to their side when they took two points from the Bayley B side. The Wellington side will be pleased to have stopped the slide down the table with these valuable two points.
