Bayley A of the second division saw there lead of eight
points cut a little this week, by two in fact, when they visited
the in form side Dawley B. The Dawley side started with Barry
Roden taking the first frame with a score of 72-42 to put
Dawley in front. Next to play was Pat McDowell who lost to
Chris Morgan-Adams 57-26. Grant Heighway who has soon dropped
onto the winning mode on his return to the game, scored a
65-38 win over Steve Nichols. The match was then squared when
Spencer Rowley beat Alex Jones 57-35. So to the match winning
point which saw Steve Hewitt make it a win for Dawley with
a comfortable victory over Bob Mason 70-26.
Maddocks C, got back to winning ways when they entertained
their club rivals Maddocks B and came out triumphant by four
frames to one. Joe Oliver was sent to the crease first and
played one of his best games of the season with a fine victory
over the experienced Wall Harper 74-31. Colin Smith then followed
suit, albeit narrowly, by taking the scalp of Doug Morrey,
before Nev Whitehead clinched the match by overcoming skipper
John Archer 64-39.
Everything pointed to a four-frame lead when Graham Hoof
led Les Hicks by nineteen points with only the green upwards
left. Anyone who knows Les will tell you he doesn’t
lie down easily, and he coolly cleared the table for a 25
break, and pinched the frame 46-40. Anchor man, Jim “Northern
Rock” Hill, then claimed the fourth point, when after
a long tussle he finally broke down Steve Pritchard and sneaked
over the line with a 50-38 score line.
This win leaves Maddocks B firmly planted at the bottom of
the second division! (Maddocks C report kindly sent by Neville
and Pat Whitehead weekly)
The third Maddocks side, Maddocks D made a slight move up
the table when they produced a good win over another potential
promotion candidate, Bayley F.
Bayley F, at the Maddocks club, started well enough by taking
the first two frames via Tom Maxfield winning his frame 60-31,
followed by Eddie Whitehead with a 57-26 win over Harry Hulme.
Although the next two frames were close affairs, Ken Davies
made no mistakes in securing the final frame and match against
Chris Shaw 54-32.
There is hardly any change in the rest of the placings this
week except for Maddocks D and Shifnal F changing places.
Shifnal F lost at home to Little Dawley G 3-2, and The Second
Club Trench, at home to Codden C consolidated their position
by beating The Codden team 3-2.
Anstice C were made to fight all the way to win their match
3-2, with the match decided in the last frame. The highlight
of this match saw Steve Camp making breaks of 42 and 29 in
his resounding victory over young Mark Weeks 88-2.
In the third division Bayley D surged on at the top of the
division when they were at home to the forlorn, Hadley side,
and took all five frames. Mostly newcomers to the game, Hadley
must be favourites for sports men of this season!
Newport Legion popped into third place this week in spite
of losing at home to Shifnal D 3-2. Les Stirling recorded
a 31 break on his way to beating Barrie Easthope 73-14, and
a as anyone who has played on that table will appreciate,
that is a good break!
Minnesota Fats C and Bayley B keep in the same pecking order
after the Bayley side visited Minnesota and came away with
a 3-2 win.
Little Dawley had all of their teams at home this week and
in this division the only changes were a turnaround in positions
for the X and the B-side. Little Dawley X beat their club
mates 3-2.
Meanwhile, the Little Dawley J side were finding the going
a little tough as the Wellington Billiard Hall B side visited
them and went home with four of the points. Kevin Whitehead
had a break of 28 as he beat Martin Laugharne 85-15. This
opens a gap of eleven points between those two teams at the
bottom of the table.
So let’s carry on with the final report from the first
division where LDS A were at home to the reigning champions,
Anstice A. Although the Anstice A were not allowed to play
two of their main players this week, take nothing from LDSA
club as they recorded a fine win 3-2 against the Anstice A
team. Whether this will be enough to deter Anstice from retaining
their championship, remains to be seen.
However,Richy Jones from the Anstice team, drew first blood
for Anstice, by beating Lee Elcock 55-46. Next up was Darren
Pountney for the Little Dawley side, who recorded a fine win
over Richy Wade 63-25 having a 53 break on the way to victory.
Tim Hicks then defeated Nick Oakley 51-37 before Ade Henry
lost to Shawn Harris by 60-19. The last frame saw Matt Bailey
beating the very consistent Ian Duffy 67-30.
The last mentioned result will give great heart to Broseley,
who went to Shifnal and took all of the points beating the
Shifnal B side 5-0. Paul Humphries will be well pleased in
beating Matt Davies 68-57, and I’m sure, as always,
Matt will take the defeat graciously. This win takes Broseley
into second place in the table, but watch out you’ve
got WBHA next week!
Having said that, in my last weeks report I spoke about the
spasmodic form of Shifnal A, and they came to the Wellington
Billiard Hall to make me eat my words. I should have known
better as they beat the Wellington lads 4-1. Three of the
games were on the black, one on the blue and one on the pink,
so the Wellington side can gain some consolation from that,
maybe!
Maddocks A visited the Bayley E side who are usually a very
hard side to beat, but Maddocks took four points from them
to move into joint second place with Broseley. Ian Skelton
made a 37 break in his frame against John Squires winning
64-23.
Codden B retain their position in the table, but after beating
Minnesota fats whist playing at home, 4-1, this match has
given them a three point cushion over the two sides beneath
them.
The Dawley A side were away to Anstice D, and gained a valuable
victory over the Anstice club beating them four frames to
one. The last two games for the Dawley side were won on the
black ball when Rick Bailey beat Phil Reynolds 49-47, and
Chris Woods beat Nigel Wallcroft 48-45.
