Normal service resumed this week to the snooker league,
and I will start my report with the second division.
Bayley F who were well in contention earlier in the season
for the promotion stakes, met their main rivals Bayley A in
a local derby match, and unfortunately came out losing 4-1
to their A side. This was a convincing win by the Bayley A
side and only Eddie Whitehead saved the blushes for the Bayley
F team by beating Arthur Burrows 80-31. Most convincing winner
of the evening was yet again, Steve Fletcher who won by 100
–16 against Andy Summers.
Meanwhile, promotion-chasing Maddocks C recorded a 3-2 victory
over visitors Codden C. This was by no means a comfortable
win as the Codden team made the perfect start taking the first
two frames with fine wins by Alan Hedgecock over Dave Thomas
62-23, and then victory on the brown ball for Don Bayliss
over Colin Smith 59-33.
Maddocks C then sent in their stalwart player, Joe Oliver
to stop the rot. Joe did just that with a convincing win over
Dave Holmes 62-17 with Dave conceding on the brown ball.
Nev Whitehead then squared the match beating Andy Weaver,
but, despite having a 39-0 lead, Andy kept hacking away only
to lose on the pink 50-34.
It was the pink ball again which came to the iron men’s
rescue, as Jim Hill duelled with Codden skipper, Ray Whitehead.
After a good tactical battle Jim secured the point taking
the frame 55-37.
Dawley B who are keeping the pressure on those above them,
still remain two points behind Maddocks C after winning their
home match 3-2 against LDSG.
Anstice C, who were away to Shifnal F, gained a very good
4-1 win, with the only winner for Shifnal being new signing,
Dave Pye who put in a fine performance by winning his frame
71-35. This win puts Anstice on level points with Codden C
in the table.
A change in directions for the next two teams, as the roles
seem to be reversing somewhat. The Second Club Trench entertained
Minnesota Fats G, and albeit a close match the Second Club
came through winning by three frames to two. The Second Club
are gradually moving up and Minnesota G who have lost some
of their early form, are slipping down!
Maddocks D, although edging the match against opponents Maddocks
B in this local derby, 3-2, crept up to third from the bottom
of the table. Very interesting scenario at the bottom of this
division as there are only three points between the bottom
six places at the moment, but still, there’s a long
way to go yet!
In the third division Bayley D were at home to LDSJ and won
the match 3-2. Craig Whitehead started the ball rolling with
a 72-13 win over J. Evans, which included a 31 break. M. Langhuarn
then replied for the Little Dawley side by taking the next
frame with a 27 clearance to win 63-13. The next two frames
were also shared between the sides, but Brian Aberdeen took
the final frame against Darren Bailey 64-20.
Shifnal D came away from Anstice B with just two points from
their match, but still remain in second spot in that division.
In view of the standard of the Anstice B side the Shifnal
lads may be well pleased with their two points taken, when
Terry Askew defeated Mick Reynolds 64-50 and Sanjay Chauhan
beat John Darrock 61-32.
Newport B continued their ascent in the table when Hadley
A visited them. The Newport side had a convincing win 5-0
although Hadley lost two of their frames on the black.
Another local derby match saw Bayley Q playing Bayley B
with the outcome of that match showing a score line of 3-2
to the Bayley Q side. Bayley Q maintain the same position
in the table, but have increased their lead over the Wellington
Billiard Hall B side who had to give their opponents the complete
match after unforeseen illness overtook their side. With only
two players able to compete, the Wellington side awarded the
match to their opponents, LDSX 5-0.
Minnesota Fats C, at home to LDSB lost their match 4-1. Paul
crooks for Minnesota Fats, although recording a 22 break in
the first frame, lost by 51-42 against Gary Clements. Phil
Cottey also had a 24 break for LDSB as he won his game 66-25
playing Toby Welsh. What a difference the black ball makes!
The last frame which was also decided on the black ball with
Simon Evans beating Dave Welsh made such a significant difference,
4-1 instead of 3-2!
So we move to the first division, and I begin this report
with Anstice D playing Bayley E. Anstice were at home and
started with a close first game with Darren Wilkie losing
to Steve Hoof on the black ball. The next frame saw Paul Devey
drop another point to the Bayley side when he lost 36-53 to
John Squire.
The next frame must have been a pleasure to watch as Keith
Blackham, playing Dave France knocked in a superb 79 break
and finished with a score line of 96-7. This game inspired
the rest of Anstice D to carry on and win the match 3-2. Although
Nigel Wallcroft beat Ali Jones on the black; the last frame
went to Phil Reynolds who recorded a comfortable win over
Andy Jones 61-22.
Reigning champions Anstice A had to visit Broseley, where
for only the second time this season, Anstice lost the match
by three frames to two.
The first frame was won by Neil Price for Anstice when Neil
beat Carl Walker 56-42. Graham Long was next up and defeated
Neil’s brother Keith, 50-30. Mick Brezwyn then put the
Broseley boys back in front with a 62-42 win over Shawn Harris.
Ian Duffy for Anstice then levelled the match by a narrow
win over Ritchie Hulme 53-41. The final frame saw Simon Mcloud
return a comfortable victory over Nick Oakley 72-23.
Little Dawley A moved up a spot with a fine 5-0 win at home
to their local rivals Dawley Social. Lee Elcock made a 39
break whilst beating Sean Nolan 69-31, and that was followed
by Darren Pountney also recording a break of 29 on his way
to victory against Mark Jones. Tim Hicks beat Chris Woods
58-31 before Matt Bailey took the fourth frame 64-36 in his
game with Pete Nolan. The closest that Dawley social came
to winning a game was in the last frame where Rick Bailey
lost on the black to Ade Henry 54-47.
Codden B at home to Maddocks A took two points from the Maddocks
team in a closely fought match. Mark Wall will be very pleased
with his narrow win over Ian Skelton, the score being 48-46
in favour of Mark.
Another local derby match, and yet again a 3-2 result went
in favour of the Shifnal A side who beat their own B side.
The Shifnal A side lost both of their losing frames on the
black. John Fallows losing to Matt Davies and Simon Biddulph
to Chris Petford.
