I have to favour the first division in this weeks report,
as there have been some exciting results to review. First,
but not foremost was the excellent win by the Little Dawley
A side against Broseley A.
The Little Dawley side, who have remained unbeaten during
the second half of the season, retained that honour as they
inflicted the second defeat of the season playing the Broseley
A side. Graham Long for Broseley scraped past Ade Henry, after
Ade missed an easy green. That put Broseley one frame ahead.
Carl Walker then won the second frame to put Broseley into
a comfortable lead. Lee Elcock then beat the in-form Paul
Humphries to pull one back for the Little Dawley side. Darren
Pountney then beat Mick Brezwyn in a tight encounter to square
the match two all.
In the last frame Matt Bailey beat Simon McLoud to win the
match, and leave Simon losing only his second frame through
out the season. Broseley may well ponder this result after
watching their adversaries results, and bearing in mind that
the Little Dawley side play Maddocks A in the last match of
the season, which may decide a lot of end results!
The local derby match between the champions, Anstice A, and
the Anstice D side was also an exciting affair, where the
D side returned a winning result of 3-2. This result was in
keeping to how the Anstice D side started the campaign. S.
Collins in the first frame set the standard of this match
when he defeated one of Anstice A’s steadiest players,
Shawn Harris by 68-38. D. Wilkie was next to play and he increased
the lead to 2-0 nil for his side beating the newly drafted
in player, Richy Wade 47-39.
That was a close game, but lo and behold what a come back
in the next frame, when Keith Price recorded a 76 break in
his frame against Nigel Wallcroft, winning 97-9 to pull one
back for the champions. Nick Oakley then got back on the winning
trail, for the A side securing a 57-30 win over Phil Reynolds.
Then came the last game where Keith Blackham took on the
ever-dependable Ian Duffy, but tonight wasn’t to be
Ian’s night. Keith had a 61 break in his frame, which
left Ian suffering his worst defeat of the season. That score
line 79-1.
Once again, Maddocks pass Broseley in the table, and can
well be thinking of the two frames conceded on a black ball
finish. The Maddocks side were at home to Dawley A and recorded
a 3-2 win, which takes them back into second spot.
Dawley A now go above the Wellington Billiard Hall A side,
who may have thought a better result for them may have been
on hand, when they visited Shifnal B. Things didn’t
work out that way as the Shifnal side turned out a good result
beating the Wellington lads 4-1. Matt Davies had breaks of
45 and 48 against our stand in player, Luigi D’Ambrosio
to record a 103-12 victory.
Apart from an easy win from Andy Kendrick, the only other
close call was when (Mr. McGoo), Nigel Stallard, took the
three remaining colours to beat Graham Darrel. Almost a better
finish than Kelly Holmes! The Wellington side now look like
they maybe yet again fighting a relegation battle, and watch
this space for a change of venue for the Wellington side in
the near future.
Codden B a home to Shifnal A, lost their first three frames
to the Shifnal side but came back strongly to take the two
remaining games. Angus Way had a good game recording a 59
break in his 77-1 victory over A. Jones.
Bayley E at home to Minnesota Fats A, lost the match 3-2,
but even after that result find themselves pushing the Wellington
A side to remain in the first division. Ali Jones made a 39
break in his frame against Mick Egan winning 56-18.
The second division saw Bayley A return to winning ways this
week, when they visited Shifnal F. Steve Nichols started well
for Bayley with breaks of 29 and 22 as he defeated K. Dickenson
62-19. Shifnal then took the next two frames courtesy of J.
Briscoe beating Arthur Burrows 72-28, followed by Chris Painter
beating Spencer Rowley 66-40. A close game next when Fred
Harper lost on the black to Bob Mason, and finally, D. Pye
from Shifnal losing the deciding frame to Chris Morgan Adams
68-44.
Local derby time with Maddocks D throwing down the gauntlet
to their club mates Maddocks C, but could unfortunately only
muster the one point. Unusual opener, Nev Whitehead set the
standard with a 69-11 defeat of Mick Wincott before Jim Hill
made it 2-0 with his frame win over Ken Davies. Ken required
three snookers on the colours and managed to secure two of
them, but then a foul on the black put paid to his efforts
and Ken went down 76-36.
Colin Smith continuing his good form, clinched the match
defeating Darren Wincott 59-16, followed by Joe Oliver’s
victory over Graham Arnold 65-24, leaving the hosts and Fred
Spragg, to claim their solitary point when he pipped Bill
Rushton on the final pink 49-39.
Anstice lost their match when they played at home to visitors
Codden C, 3-2 but in doing so lost no ground in the table.
Minnesota Fats G moved a couple of places up in the table
courtesy of a good 4-1 win against the Little Dawley G side.
The Dawley side however, lost two of these frames on the black,
so the match wasn’t as one sided as sometimes the final
score suggests!
After Maddocks C’s fine win, the two sides also contesting
for the honours in this division, made little ground on the
leaders. Dawley B at home to Bayley F found the Dawley side
losing out by the odd frame 3-2. These two teams illustrated
why they are vying for contention, as three of the games were
decided on the black ball.
The Second Club Trench seemed to have reached the safety
zone after a slow start to the season, although this week
they lost at home to Maddocks B, 3-2. Not always easy finding
your feet as a new club, but nice to see The Second Club settling
in, so to speak.
Bayley D maintain their three point lead in the third division
after entertaining Shifnal D at the Bayley club. Craig Whitehead
was chasing a tense game against Terry Askew, until a 22 break
brought him back into the game to end up by winning the frame
63-36. Dave Williams for the home side, came back from being
26 points adrift, only to miss a reasonable blue into the
middle sack on the colours, leaving Saunjay to pot blue and
pink for the frame.
The third game between Peter Wharton and Brian Aberdeen was
just as close an affair, until Peter potted the last few colours
to take the frame from Shifnal to give them a 2-1 lead. The
next two frames were taken by the Bayley side, but proved
to be no easy task as both frames were decided on the black,
D. Rhoades beating Geoff French 44-37, and Dave Dudley defeating
Barrie Easthope 46-38.
Anstice B went to play at their rival promotion chasing contenders,
Newport Legion, and in a closely fought match managed a 3-2
win over Newport with Noel Stones winning the match in the
last frame. This edges the Anstice side one point nearer to
top of the table, Bayley D.
Little Dawley X, although with the home advantage, lost their
match with Bayley B by four frames to one. With Little Dawley
J result not in, at the moment this means that Bayley B have
leapfrogged both of the Little Dawley sides at this point
in time.
Hadley A were given the home advantage by the Wellington
Billiard Hall B side but still lost the match 3-2.
Bayley Q at home to Minnesota Fats C lost their match 3-2,
albeit on another last frame decider when Paul Crooks beat
Chris Fletcher 63-38.
Although Little Dawley J result has not arrived, it will
not alter the last four positions in this week’s table.
