Let’s start in the third division this week, and
my first report concerns division leaders, Bayley D. Bayley
D had to visit the Little Dawley B side, and continuing their
good form, came away with a 3-2 victory over the Dawley side.
This was not easy going as the Bayley side went two frames
ahead, courtesy of wins from C Whitehead 57 – Gary Clements
19, and D. Williams with a 53-35 win over Simon Evans. Little
Dawley then came back strongly to level the with two black
ball wins, one from Colin Gittus beating D. Rhoades 53-46,
and Phil Cottey’s victory over D. Dudley 39-35. The
decider was won by Brian Aberdeen against Snowy Darrock with
a comfortable score line of 64-26.
Anstice B at home to Minnesota Fats C are nibbling away at
the leaders of this division with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota
side. Mick Reynolds made a 44 break in the first frame when
he beat Bob Lane 82-20. That was followed by Noel Stones win
53-29, playing Paul Crooks. John Darrock then lost his game
when Mike Thompson won the frame 62-25.
Next player up for Anstice was George Hammond, winning on
the black against Toby Welsh, and then in the final frame
Stew Wimbush had to pot a re-spotted black to beat Tom Firmstone
52-45.
Shifnal D who were at home to the Little Dawley X, side took
the first three frames but then the Dawley side won the last
two for a 3-2 score line to The Shifnal players.
Newport Legion still remain in contention after playing away
to the Bayley B. Newport managed to take three of the five
points on offer. Kevin West recorded a fine break of 35 in
his match against Allan Davies.
Hadley A, although at home to the Little Dawley J side, could
only squeeze one point from their opponents when Dave Barnett
beat J. Duckett 41-35. Hadley nearly gained another point
when Richard Goldie lost on the black to J. Calvert, so the
Hadley side find themselves adrift from the rest in this division
by six points!
Now to the first division where normal service returned for
the Anstice A side this week, and saw Keith and Neil Price
return to the A side.
The Anstice were at home, and taking no chances as they
drafted Richy Wade in for the second week running. Although
Richy won his frame on the black in a high scoring game beating
Steve Downes 68-59 the rest of the games were comfortably
won. Shaun Harris had two breaks of 29 and 31 to polish off
his opponent by 81-1.
Broseley A entertained the Wellington Billiard Hall in the
true meaning of the word, as we watched some good snooker,
as they beat us 5-0. The highlight of this match was when
P. Humphries snookered Alex Turnbull so much that he went
40 points in front, and then watching Alex come all the way
back to lose on the black ball. What a frame, and the final
score was 83-81. There won’t be many more games with
that sort of score line, unless there are extra reds put on
the table!
Maddocks A keep on turning out good results and they had
a superb win over the Shifnal B side 5-0. The Shifnal side,
at home, started so well when Phil Davies with a 49 break
beat Matt Davies 69-45. This set the scene for victory, and
only Chris Petford came close to winning a frame but lost
on the black to Ian Skelton 46-38. Daz Wincott also had a
36 break in his frame beating Rob Wright 61-48.
The Dawley A side at home to the Bayley E saw Sean Nolan
taking on Andy O’Brien. Sean took an early 20-point
lead only for Andy to bounce back with breaks of 32 and 26.
Andy went on to give the Bayley E side a 1-0 lead with a score
line of 74-36. The second frame had Dawley’s youngster,
Alex Nolan playing against Steve Hoof. A close frame saw Alex
prevail to win by 55-40.
Next up was Pete Nolan against D. Rowley. A good performance
from the flying Scotsman saw him give the lead to the Dawley
side as he won his frame 63-4. Mark Jones then came up against
Ali Jones where a see saw frame saw both players exchanging
the lead through out the match. Mark edged out in front by
fifteens pionts towards the end of the game, only to see an
excellent clearance from Ali, to win the frame on the black.
The next frame was contested by the two slowest players in
the league, according to this report from Mark Jones, although
I would personally question that view. Chris “grind
em down” Woods took on Bayley captain Dave France. The
Dawley player forged a good early lead and with the aid of
a 33 break consolidated that lead and went on to a comfortable
victory, 83-47, and clinch the match for the Dawley A side.
Anstice D visited Minnesota Fats A, who were good enough
to fill the vacant slot left by the Codden A side, who withdrew
at such a late date in the proceedings. Unfortunately for
the Minnesota side, Anstice took all five points from this
match with the first frame between Paul Devey of Anstice,
beating Neil Pearson on the black by 40 points to 37.
Shifnal A, at home to The Little Dawley A side, won their
first two frames and then lost their way, and the match 3-2.
Did I say spasmodic form in one of my earlier reports?
Maddock C made a little progress in their efforts to reach
first division status this week, when they visited the Bayley
F team, and came away with a 3-2 win. This was three hard
earned points from Maddocks, as once again Joe Oliver set
the trend when he took the first frame from Chris Shaw 60-35.
Young Tom Maxfield quickly squared the match with a score
line of 56-11 victory over Dave Thomas, followed by an impressive
win by team mate Eddie Whitehead, when he defeated Bill Rushton
to put the Bayley boys in the driving seat. However, that’s
when things took a turn when Nev Whitehead made it two frames,
each beating Paul Maxfield 55-37.
The next frame saw an excellent show of potting and safety
play from iron man Colin Smith to take the match, and a score
line of 90-41 over Andy Summers. Although the Bayley A side
suffered defeat again this week, the Bayley F side must be
wondering about their chances of promotion, as the gap continues
to grow between themselves and the three teams above them.
Bayley A met the Second Club Trench at the Bayley club and
suffered there second, forgive the pun, defeat in a row. The
Bayley side still have a cushion of seven points after losing
this match 3-2.
Dawley B who played at the Maddocks B side, keep in touch,
courtesy of a 3-2 win over the Maddocks team, and that in
spite of having to give a frame away due to being short of
one player. This illustrates how important it is to have reserves
signed!
Little Dawley G and Anstice C remain in the same position
in the table after the Anstice side went to Little Dawley
and came away with a 3-2 win.
