The end of an era this week when the Wellington Billiard
Hall A played their last match from the hall. The Wellington
A side have been one of the most prolific winners of trophies
throughout the history of the snooker league and in what could
be their final game at Wellington met the Little Dawley A
side.
Little Dawley retained their unbeaten record for the second
half of the season when they reversed the result from our
first encounter earlier in the season. The Wellington side
will be well pleased at the end result after losing the first
three frames and then watching Graham Darrel easily beating
Lee Elcock 71-13 including a 38 break, and the final frame
where Andy Kendricks showed the form that used to be so regular,
beating Matt Bailey 70-48.
Things are hotting up at the top of the table this week,
as Maddocks become the new leaders after defeating Minnesota
Fats A at the Minnesota club. The score line was an impressive
5-0 and puts Maddocks one point in front at the top of the
table.
Broseley A at home, also recorded a 5-0 win over Codden B
where there was a break of 30 or more in four of the frames.
Graham Long started the onslaught with a 45 break against
Phil Scklarzewicz winning 77-2, but in the next frame, although
A. Jones made a 30 break, his opponent Carl walker also recorded
a 32 break and that frame ended up with a 79-36 score line
in favour of Carl. This set Broseley up for a comfortable
victory, and they now move into second place.
Anstice A slip to third spot, and although having the home
advantage, only won three of the five frames. Bayley E took
two frames off Anstice courtesy of A. O’Brien beating
Shawn Harris 54-32 in the first game of the evening,, and
then capturing another game when A. Jones beat Neil Price
in a low scoring game 46-34.
Shifnal B displayed another good performance when they visited
the Dawley A side and came away with a 4-1 win. Matt Davies
opened the Shifnal sides account with a 54 break, which seems
obligatory these days. We may have to compile a separate break
table for Matty! That sore line 76-2 playing Chris Woods.
Sean Nolan pulled a frame back for Dawley in a closely fought
match against Ray Evans, but that was the Dawley sides’
only point. Rick Bailey did lose the last game on the black
after playing the revitalised Nigel Stallard which puts into
perspective how good a 4-1 results looks on the score card,
but what a difference that one point makes!
They Shifnal A side were at home to Anstice D and won the
first four frames. Andy Easthope had a good 47 in his frame
against K. Blackham to win 67-24. The visitors managed to
take one point when Phil Reynolds defeated Simon Biddulph
61 –41.
I must apologise for not using the reports sent to me by
e-mail, but unfortunately I am having computer problems at
the moment and normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.
Second division leaders, at home to Anstice C won their match
3-2 which keeps them six points clear at the top of division
two. Steve Nichols got Bayley off to a good start beating
Frank Williams and knocking in a 21 on the way. Bob Mason
then beat Kev Smith 61-40 before Chris Morgan Adams increased
the lead to 3-0 against Andy Elliot, albeit on the black ball.
Steve Camp then stopped the march when he took the next game
playing Spencer Rowley 49-35 followed by Mick Musgrave for
Anstice beating Arthur Burrows 63-33.
Maddocks C and Dawley B both contesting second place at the
moment, played at Maddocks and the Maddocks side came out
on top with a 3-2 win. Graham Hoof, Colin Smith and Jim Hill
took the three frames for Maddocks and Grant Heighway and
Kev Jones the two for the visitors Dawley.
Maddocks B who were also at home still remain at the bottom
of the table by a couple of points, were only able to take
two frames from their visitors Shifnal F although the match
went to a decider with Fred Harper beating John Archer 72-30.
Little Dawley G meanwhile were entertaining the Maddocks
D side who were on the end of another defeat 3-2 and yet again
on the last frame of the match decided on the black ball.
R. Levenue clocked a 25 break during his narrow win over B.
Wincott, 61-59.
Codden C may well finish the season in a good position as
they lay in fourth place currently on the back of a good 4-1
win over the Minnesota Fats G team. Codden made full use of
the home advantage with only Ray Whitehead losing to Tony
Marsh 54-40.
The Bayley F side were at home to The Second Club Trench
and funny how things develop over the season. The Bayley side
who really looked to be contenders for the title at one stage
have now completely lost their fire, and the Second Clubs
5-0 victory over the Bayley side illustrates how well the
new Second team have settled in together, and are now comfortable
in the middle of the table and just two points behind Bayley
F.
Now to the third division, and first to one of the most sporting
teams, Hadley A. Bayley Q went to the Hadley side and inflicted
a 5-0 win over them, which keeps them firmly rooted at the
bottom of the table. As a new side in the league I hope that
Hadley are still enjoying the snooker season as I know Richard
Goldie still relishes his game of snooker.
At the other end of the table Bayley D and Bayley B clashed,
with division leaders Bayley D coming out on top by the odd
frame. This match was a close encounter and another match
decided in the last game when Craig Whitehead beat D. Oliver
52-45.
Anstice B continue their winning ways by beating the Little
Dawley X side 4-1. The little Dawley side had to make the
small journey to the Anstice B side and the only winner for
them was Ryan Jackson who defeated Steve Smallwood 55-33.
Another side that are doing quite well this season is Newport
British Legion. Newport were away to Minnesota Fats C in a
match, which ended up 4-1 to Newport. D. Davies gave for Newport
an early lead beating Toby Welsh 59-31. A close game next,
which was decided on the black when K. Gardener beat Mike
Thompson 40-34. Minnesota must have thought lady luck had
completely deserted them, as the next two frames were both
lost with “in offs” on the black ball. The last
frame however saw Paul Crooks with some good potting and a
22 break take the solitary point for Minnesota beating Les
Stirling 63-34.
Little Dawley b took an early three frame lead over the Wellington
Billiard Hall B side playing at Dawley, but Alan Francis and
Ian Atkinson made sure that all the points didn’t go
to Dawley by winning the last two games.
Little Dawley J had to go to Shifnal D and just came away
with the one point and that was taken by J. Calvert beating
A. Aston 58-42.
