In the second division this week there was a dramatic
change at the top of the table when Bayley A increased their
lead to eight points over their nearest rivals. Those rivals
are now Maddocks C as the Bayley F team went down 5-0.
Bayley A were playing away to Maddocks D and although Steve
Fletcher didn’t play for his side this week, the team
kept up their good form with a 4-1 over the Maddocks D team.
Closest game of the evening was Spencer Rowley’s win
over Mick Wincott on the black.
Whilst the Bayley A side were gaining their 4-1 win, Bayley
F, also away to Little Dawley G, found their opponents too
strong, and lost by five frames to nil, Bayleys' first white
wash of the season.
Maddocks C, who have shown consistent results over the past
few weeks, have moved into third place this week with a fine
4-1 win over Minnesota Fates G. Joe Oliver set the ball rolling
with a close win over Aaron O’Donnell 54-39. Colin Smith
then followed suit by beating James Price and making a break
of 24 during the game. The consistent Jim Hill wrapped up
the match by beating Craig Davies 58-22. The next game went
to the home player; Wayne Weeks, who saved the blushes and
halted the charge with a good win over Bill Rushton 71-48.
However, this didn’t stop the foundry men as Nev Whitehead
took the last frame to make it 4-1, beating Tony Marsh 48-29.
The Maddocks B side, who were away to Codden C, suffered
a resounding defeat of five frames to nil. The closest that
Maddocks B got to snatching a point was in Doug Morreys’
game when he went down on the black ball.
Dawley B were away to Anstice C, and are still hovering in
third place due to their consistency this season. Grant Heighway
made an appearance for Dawley after being away from the snooker
scene for a considerable time. Although Grant lost his first
comeback game, the Dawley B side kept their momentum going.
The match was won 3-2 when Barry Roden won the deciding frame
60-30 against Jason Mills.
In spite of a 4-1 win over Shifnal F the 2nd Club Trench
still remain joint bottom of the second division. Still, this
result must be very heartening for the 2nd Club as they were
playing away from home, and a few results like this will soon
see them moving away from the bottom of the division.
Shifnal D still remain at the head of the third division,
albeit by one point only now, as their game away to Bayley
Q ended in a 3-2 defeat. Although taking the first two frames,
the Bayley side came back strongly to take the match by three
frames to two.
Three of the Bayley sides managed to win this week, but Bayley
B who played at Little Dawley B, lost their match 3-2. This
match may have hinged on the result of the game played between
Simon Evans from Dawley, who beat Chris Haycox on the black.
Meanwhile Bayley D, although still remaining in second place
in this division, have moved to within one point of the leaders
after beating the Little Dawley X side 4-1, young Alex Boyd
being the only player to show any form for little Dawley X.
The Wellington Billiard Hall B-side lost 4-1 to Minnesota
Fats C, but have still retained their position, just third
from the bottom. I’m sure they will kick into gear with
some good results soon.
Hadley A, although at home to Anstice B, couldn’t make
use of their home advantage, and lost by four frames to one.
Dave Barnett had a really exceptional win over Mick Reynolds
on the black ball in the first frame of the evening, but that
turned out to be the only win of the evening for Hadley.
The champions of the first division, and still current leaders
this season so far, recorded a fine 4-1 win over Shifnal B,
playing at Shifnal. Shawn Harris had a 40 break to take the
first frame against Ray Evans, but then the seemingly invincible
Ian Duffy met up with Matt Davies. Matt Davies had a 47 break
whilst playing Ian, and won the frame by 75-15. Unfortunately
Shifnal never quite got back into the match until the last
frame, when Nick Oakley narrowly beat Dave Peplow on the black.
Bayley E at home to little Dawley A, won their match by three
frames to two, although by the score card, it looked as if
Little Dawley A couldn’t field a full side, so therefore
the last frame was awarded to the Bayley E side.
Maddocks A played a good home match against the Wellington
Billiard Hall A side, winning by five frames to nil. Phil
Davies won the first game comfortably by 69-38 with a few
good chances of making breaks, which didn’t materialise.
The next match seemed a much closer affair until Ian Eldridge
compiled a nice 40 break, which left Alex Turnbull little
or no chance of winning that frame!
Ian Skelton then played Alan Turner, and several times this
game looked as though it might have been a walkover for Ian.
Some of Ian’s shots were superb, but Alan hung on, and
after taking the colours from yellow to pink, decided to go
for broke. After missing the pink ball it was left over the
middle sack, and Ian duly obliged for Maddocks, taking them
three nil up.
Next up Dave France played Graham Darrel. Graham never seemed
to get into the match early on, as everything Dave went for
came out safe. Dave ground out a lead, and did finish well
in the latter stages to end up taking Grahams unbeaten record.
So, four nil to Maddocks, and the last frame saw Leigh France
playing Andy Kendrick’s. Leigh came out on top in this
game giving Maddocks a score line of 5-0.
Dawley Social were at home to Broseley and lost by the same
score line as the aforementioned match. This means that they
still remain one point behind Maddocks A in spite of their
fine 5-0 win. Carl Walker opened the match against Sean Nolan
and made a 42 break in his game, and this set the trend for
Broseley, as they never lost another game throughout the match.
