The league took second place this week to the Dones cup
knock out competition.
Bayley A were away to Newport British Legion, and giving
them a 70 start. Bayley started very well with Steve Fletcher
winning the first frame by a margin of 59 points against John
Yapp. The second frame was a lot closer and Newport’s
Nigel Simpson beat Bob Mason by two points. The next frame
was just a close as Keith Gardener only lost by one point
to Steve Nichols. Bayley A made a little headway in the fourth
game when Spencer Rowley beat Alan Davies by 21 points. That
left Chris Morgan Adams needing a total of 14 points to win
the match but Les Stirling was having none of that as he came
out winning by 76-29 and effectively putting the Bayley lads
into the consolation cup
Bayley B, also drawn away to Anstice B, were much closer
in their match. Although giving them a ten-point lead, John
Darrock started well against Kevin Mcloud and won by 32 points.
That soon altered when Mick Cahill played Kevin West and lost
by 31 points. Now all to play for and Noel Stones, probably
too experienced for this division, came out with a winning
margin of 77 points. This effectively put paid to Bayleys
chances, as George Hammond also gained a win by 29 points
against Dicky Bedall. Although Dick Oliver clawed back 25
points in the last frame it was too little too late, maybe
thanks to the handicap! but there you go.
Bayley Q were awarded a 140 head start against Little Dawley
A, and the ex WBH F team made no bones in setting out their
stall. Darren Pountney played Chris Durham in the first frame
and pulled back 29 points for Little Dawley A. Lee Elcock
then played Rob Cook and drew back another 17 points. It was
a start, but with an excellent performance from the in form
Steve Weatherall and captain Chris Fletcher, Bayley levelled
the frame score at two-all as Ade Henry and Ritchie Heighway
were beaten. This meant that Matt Bailey, a former Hills Lane
player, needed to pull back 152 points in the last frame against
Richie Tranter. Although Matt had a 38 clearance it was not
enough to see LDS through. I haven’t had the pleasure
of seeing Matt play lately, but nice to have him back on the
snooker scene.
Codden C were giving ten points to the Second Club Trench
and had a resounding win over the Second Club, with the end
score being 368 to Codden and 166 to the Second Club. The
highlight of the third frame was Ray Whiteheads win over N.
Holmes by 118 points to 33 points.
Codden B, also at home to first division champions Anstice
A were receiving a 60 point start, and in spite of Steve Downes
fine win over Keith Price, his solitary win was not enough
to take them through, and Codden B lost by a margin of 36
points.
Minnesota Fats C with a 130 start over the Wellington Billiard
Hall put up a tremendous performance and only lost the match
on the black in the final frame. Graham Darrel was the hero
for Wellington with a cracking game against Neil Robinson
and with a winning margin of 98 points.
Meanwhile Maddocks A had a walkover as their opponents Minnesota
Fats A didn’t turn up to play!
Maddocks D also at home to Broseley were receiving 90 points,
but it was not quite enough as Maddocks went down by 32 points.
Bayley E at home to Minnesota Fats G were giving a 60 start
to their opponents, but in the first two frames the match
was a foregone conclusion after Andy O’Brien had a 42
break playing Wayne Weeks, followed by Steve Hoof compiling
a 58 break and winning by 90 points in his game.
Bayley D were at home to little Dawley X where little Dawley
started with a slender 10 points handicap. It proved to be
not quite enough, as the only winner for little Dawley X was
Richard Davies in the last frame, and he had far too many
points to recapture.
The last Bayley team in the competition was Bayley F at home
to Dawley A. Dawley were giving their opponents a 30 start
which was soon pulled back by Sean Nolan as he beat Chris
Shaw by 32 points. Almost level then, when young Tom Maxfield
met up with Sean’s brother Pete. Young Tom won that
match by a fifteen-point margin. Still not a lot of difference
until Eddie Whitehead played the next frame beating Mark Jones
77-40. Paul Maxfield then won his frame, leaving Rick Bailey
needing a margin of 40 points to win the match. Although Rick
won his game against Andy Summers the winning margin was only
12 points in favour of Rick, and not enough to redeem the
match.
Little Dawley G played Anstice D with little Dawley having
the advantage of 130 points start. The Little Dawley side
won the match by over 100 points!
Dawley B giving 100 start to little Dawley J managed to overcome
their opponents with the best winner of the evening being
Paddy McDowell who beat John Evans 100-42.
Shifnal A had the handicap of 160 to pull back in their match
with Hadley A. This they did in style as John Fallows bet
D. A. Barnett by 120 points followed by Angus Way who pulled
back another 70 points against Dave Barnett. That left Andy
Easthope, Phil Whitby and Lindsay Knox to complete the rout
with a final score of 411 to 48 points.
Shifnal B didn’t get an easy ride in their match against
Maddocks C although Nigel Stallard started brightly enough
pulling back 20 of their 60 points deficit. Neville Whitehead
had a nice 30 break playing Chris Petford, but Chris stuck
to the task and eventually only lost his game by twelve points.
In the third frame Joe Oliver was “up against it”
as he played one of the finest players in our league today,
Matt Davies. Matty won the frame by 72 points putting Shifnal
in front for the first time in the evening. The fourth frame
was a nervy affair and going into the last frame there was
only a three-point difference. In the last game Dave (The
Rock) Peplow pulled out some superb pots to steer Shifnal
into the next round.
The Wellington Billiard Hall side had a 20 start playing
away to Shifnal D. In the first frame Terry Askew played well
and had a 30 break against R. Benting. Terry came out winning
by 52 points putting the Shifnal men in front. In the next
frame S. Chauhan compiled a break of 29 defeating Gareth Hughes
by a further 55 points. Kevin Whitehead then made some token
resistance winning his game by 37 points but unfortunately
Wellington’s next game saw G. French and Alan Francis
draw their game, and then in the last frame Barrie Easthope
Beat Ian Atkinson by one point, thus putting Shifnal through.
Shifnal F who were playing away to Little Dawley B were another
side that were unable to retrieve their handicap of 60 points,
and lost by a margin of 82.
Finally Anstice C at home to Maddocks B were given a 20-point
lead and managed to win four of their frames comfortably.
A valliant effort was made by Les Hicks in the third frame,
when he won by 81 clear points. That must have given his Maddocks
teammates a great boost, but unfortunately the match was lost
by 38 points in the end.
