Telford A Fall To Anstice In Inter-Town

It was a new-look Telford A side that visited Anstice in the first round of the West Midland’s Inter-Town competition with several players making their debuts in the competition.

In recent years several clubs in the Telford area have entered their own teams in the competition so when the draw pitted the Telford League’s representative side against another team from Telford there was sure to be some local bragging rights at stake.

The Madeley side featured a strong line up including local professional Adrian Gunnell so it was perhaps no surprise that they eventually ran out 6-1 winners to book their place in the second round.

Phil Reynolds, himself an Anstice player, found himself playing against his local club as he turned out for Telford A against Anstice captain Ian Duffy.

Phil started well, opening up an early lead of 21 points before Ian replied with a run of 34 and then finished the frame with a 51 clearance to put the Anstice ahead.

The home side didn’t have things all their own way though and Lee Elcock, masking his debut for Telford, shrugged off his early nerves to level the match with a superb 58-32 victory over Neil Price.

Local professional Adrian Gunnell then took centre stage against Broseley A’s Carl Walker. Carl started well and when he left Adrian half-snookered on a red he wouldn’t have expected what was to follow – for Adrian duly potted the red and went on to make a superb 80 break to put Anstice in front again.

Keith Price then gave Ade Henry few opportunities to make his mark as the Anstice man clinched his side’s third victory with a 50 break to leave them just one frame away from a place in the next round.

And that frame duly arrived courtesy of Matt Bailey who showed he’s lost none of his potting power with a super break of 67 to deny his former Hills Lane teammate Tim Hicks.

Adam Moore’s 68-30 defeat of Nigel Wallcroft made it 5-1 to the Anstice before Noel Stones completed a 6-1 win for Madeley by beating Nick Oakley in the final frame of the evening.

My thanks to Nigel Stallard for providing the information for this report.
