TELFORD SNOOKER LEAGUE

Match Report - 22nd October 2003

Coddon C’s unbeaten record came to an end last week when Anstice C rocked the second division leader’s perfect start to the season to leave just three points separating the top seven sides in Division 2 of the Telford Snooker League (sponsored by Romeo & Juliets).

Things started well for the Donnington side when Don Bayliss took the opening frame from Mike Musgrave but a narrow 57-47 win for Colin Westwood over Fraser MacKinnon saw the Anstice draw level and they went in front through Steve Camp’s 55-17 defeat of Alan Hedgecock.

Kev Smith secured the Madeley side’s second win of the season when he came out on top by 52 points to 35 against Sef Tusel and although Ray Whitehead salvaged another point for the Coddon with a final frame victory over Dave Harper it wasn’t enough to prevent his side slipping to their first defeat.

Fortunately for Coddon, second placed Dawley A were unable to take advantage as they too fell to a narrow defeat away to Bayley A.

Spencer Rowley’s opening frame win over Sean Nolan was cancelled out as Dawley’s silver-haired assassin Mark Jones defeated Steve Nicholls.

Young Alex Nolan, playing in his first ever league game, showed few nerves as he bravely fought back to snatch another frame for the visitors when he took brown and blue before sinking the last two colours to take the next on the black only for the Bayley to clinch their fourth win by taking the remaining two frames through Steve Fletcher and Chris Morgan-Adams.

As a result Dawley now have to settle for a share of second place in the table along with Maddocks B who made it five wins out of six when they travelled to Wellington Billiard Hall C.

Doug Morrey led the way with a 51-17 success over Andrew Edwards but the Billiard Hall responded with Mick Turner taking the next on the black against John Archer.

A 20 break from Wayne weeks wasn’t enough to put the Billiard Hall in front as Les Hicks took Frame three 54-43 and the visitors made certain of clinching the match when Wally Harper took the next as well against Craig Davies.

However Aaron O’Donnell’s final frame success over Nigel White saved another point for the Billiard Hall and denied the Oakengates side a share of the lead at the top of the table.

Little Dawley C are now one of three teams on sixteen points after recording a fine 3-2 win over Maddocks C who lie fourth with one point more then their opponents.

Graham Wiley snatched a dramatic black ball win over Dave Thomas to give Little Dawley the lead and the visitors went further ahead courtesy of Mike King’s victory over Jim Hill.

Colin Smith was unable to stem the tide as a 20 break wasn’t enough to prevent Colin Gittus making it 3-0 with a run of 22 of his own – however the home side rallied superbly to claim the last two frames through Joe Oliver and Nev Whitehead.

Little Dawley G were unable to follow their C side’s lead as they fell to a 4-1 reverse at the hands of Dawley B who had Alan Jones on hand to give them the early lead.

A vital 22 break saw Barry Roden safely over the winning line as he snatched the next frame for Dawley by a single point against Graham Copson and although Roy Leneveu pulled a frame back for the visitors by beating G Jones the home side took the last two frames through Kevin Jones and Steve Hewitt who defeated Roy Vickery and Darren Leneveu respectively.

Minnesota Fats B had to come from behind to record their fourth win with a 4-1 success away to Coddon B.

Andy Jones was in fine form early on for the Coddon but his opening frame win over Harry Jones was nullified when Mick Pearson drew the visitors level with a 73-52 victory over Mark Wall.

Mick Egan’s 66-38 defeat of Steve Downs saw Minnesota take the lead and they made sure of taking the match when Kirk Stephenson got the better of Nick Pearce in frame four.

The home side had the final say though when Phil Szklarzewicz clinched their second point of the evening with a 67-17 final frame win over Neil Pearson.

DIVISION 1

First division leaders Anstice A looked to be coasting early on as they opened up a 2-0 lead away to newly promoted Shifnal B – Neil Price and Ian Duffy both recording twenty plus breaks.

Keith Price’s narrow 50-41 win over Nigel Stallard made it 3-0 before the home side clicked into gear with M Shadab pulling a frame back with a fine 57-48 win over Noel Stones.

And the home side took the final frame too when Nick Oakley’s 20 break proved no match for Ray Evans’ run of 26 as the Shifnal man took the frame by 50 points to 39.

With second-placed Maddocks A’s result not yet in Anstice’s lead at the top is now four points with both Shifnal A and Bayley E lying in third spot together with 18 points each.

Shifnal A have now averaged exactly three points a game as they returned to winning ways with a 4-1 win away to Little Dawley A.

But they had to come from behind after Rich Heighway took the first frame for Little Dawley with the aide of a 30 break.

Chris Painter soon levelled matters though and John Fallows put Shifnal ahead with a 72-42 success over Lee Elcock.

Roy Martin took a close fourth frame to deny Jesse Lowe before Andy Easthope put the icing on the cake with a 55-34 win over Ade Henry to leave Shifnal with five wins out of six.

Bayley E’s bright start to the season has been halted slightly in recent weeks and they suffered a second successive loss when they made the short rip across town to play Wellington Billiard Hall A.

They started well enough with Andy O’Brien taking the opening frame on the black against Graham Darrell but wins from Andy Kendrick and Alan Turner saw the Billiard Hall take the lead only to be pegged back through Ali Jones’ 69-30 defeat of John Rawlins.

However the balance finally tipped the Billiard Hall’s way when Mick Hughes secured the home side’s second win of the campaign with a 57-25 triumph over David France.

Shifnal E are still searching for their first win though after falling to a narrow 3-2 defeat against Minnesota Fats A.

Jon Wright set the scene for Minnesota’s third win with a 35 break to take the opening frame from Arron Sparkes but the home side turned the tables by taking the next two frames through Jeff Sparkes and Dave Billingham.

But Minnesota were destined to finish the match just as they had started it with Steve Osborne levelling matters at two frames all before Paul Devey rattled in a run of 35 to deny Chris Petford and leave the visitors triumphant by the odd frame.

John Jones gave Anstice D the lead when they entertained last season’s runners-up Broseley A in what proved to be a close affair decided ultimately by just a single frame.

Paul Humphries drew Broseley level with a high-scoring 78-61 win over Darren Wilkie but breaks of 29 each from Adam Moore and Phil Reynolds ensured they accounted for Mick Brezwyn and Graham Long respectively as Anstice moved into an unassailable 3-1 lead.

However they were unable to add to their tally as Simon McLeod took the final frame for Broseley with a 83-34 win over Nigel Wallcroft.

DIVISION 3

Maddocks D are now the only undefeated team in the entire league after a 3-2 win over Bayley B in the third division’s match of the day.

The Bayley started the day second in the table – some three points behind their opponents – and they set about reducing that deficit as Kelvin McLeod rattled in a 32 break on the way to taking the opening frame from Martin Wincott.

Danny Oliver then made it 2-0 to the visitors with a fine 60-28 success over Ken Davies but it was then that the Bayley’s luck ran out as Maddocks took all three of the remaining frames for what could ultimately prove to be a vital 3-2 win.

Former Bayley player Fred Spragg made no mistake against Allan Wheatley before M Lucas levelled matters with a 54-33 win over Bob Tracy.

A 21 break proved crucial in the decider as Brendan Wincott just edged out Dickie Oliver 52-41 to give Maddocks the match and maintain their unbeaten record.

As a result Bayley B drop one place to third with Bayley F leapfrogging them into a promotion spot following a 3-2 win over Hadley A.

D Barnett junior produced a fine comeback as he cleared the last four colours to pip young Tom Maxfield 61-43 to give Hadley the lead.

But his joy was short-lived as Andy Summers drew the home side level by beating L Hayes.

A Barnett’s black ball victory over Chris Shaw put the visitors back in front only for Paul Maxfield and Eddie Whitehead to retrieve the situation for the Bayley with wins over Shane Dicken and D Barnett Senior respectively to leave Hadley still looking for their first win.

Minnesota Fats C lie just a point behind Bayley F following on from their 4-1 win at home to Wellington Billiard Hall F.

Paul Crooks took the first frame by the narrowest of margins – as just a single point separated him and Martin Chapman.

Tom Firmstone made it 2-0 with a 47-31 win over Chris Bates and the home side were soon four frames up after Dave Welsh and Neil Robinson accounted for Steve Weatherall and Phil Spencer.

Only Richard Tranter’s 73-45 win over Toby Welsh prevented the whitewash as the home side moved up to fourth spot.

Wellington Billiard Hall B fared only slightly better when they took two frames from a difficult away trip to Bayley D.

Home captain Darren Rhoades gave the Bayley the lead with a fine win over Danny Francis but the lead was short-lived as Kev Whitehead knocked in runs of 24 and 30 to draw the Billiard Hall level in quick-fire fashion.

They then went ahead courtesy of an Ian Atkinson victory over Bill France but parity was once again restored when Steve Lane, resplendent in his Union Jack socks, accounted for Alan Francis 48-22.

And with Dave Dudley winning the decider 51-36 against Roy Francis the home side were left to celebrate their third win of the season to keep them in mid-table.

Anstice B also won by the odd frame when they travelled to play Little Dawley B.

Captain Stew Wimbush led by example with a fine opening frame victory over Phil Cottey and the visitors doubled their lead when George Hammond won a tight second frame by nine points against Rob Barlow.

Mick Cahill made it 3-0 before the home side staged something of a mini comeback with Craig Darrock and Tommy Wotherspoon getting the better of John Darrock and Billy Watson respectively.

Shifnal D celebrated their first win of the season in some style as they raced into an early 4-0 lead against Newport British Legion B only to be denied a full house through Mike Doverskog’s 50-40 final frame win over Barrie Easthope.

Terry Askew opened the scoring and Sanjay Chauhan doubled Shifnal’s lead with the aid of a 21 break against Alan Munn.

Geoff French then made it 3-0 before Arthur Aston edged out Alan Davies by some nine points to ensure his side of a first win of the new season.
