Victories from Brendan Wincott and Fred Spragg saw Maddocks
D come from behind to keep their title hopes on track with
a 3-2 win over Little Dawley B in the third division of the
Telford Snooker League (sponsored by Romeo & Juliets).
The third division leaders took the opening frame when Mick
Wincott defeated Gary Clements 59-41 but the favourites for
the title were rocked back on their heals when the home side
took the next two frames.
Breaks of 22 and 27 secured the second frame for Phil Cottey
against Ken Davies and when Tom Wotherspoon took the next
58-24 against Mick Lucas Maddocks were in grave danger of
losing for only the second time this season.
However Brendan Wincott had other ideas and a 21 break saw
him safely home against Simon Evans before Fred Spragg saved
the day with a close 57-47 success over James Evans in the
decider.
Maddock’s victory leaves them three points clear at
the top of the table after Bayley F took four points from
their derby clash with their D team.
Captain Paul Maxfield led the way with a stunning opening
frame win over Brian Aberdeen. Breaks of 22 and 41 set the
trend for the rest of the evening and further wins for Tom
Maxfield over home captain Darren Rhoades and Chris Shaw,
who beat Dave Williams on the black, saw the F team take
a commanding three frame lead.
Andy Summers continued to pile on the pressure with a solid
64-28 win over Craig Whitehead leaving the home side with
the consolation of a final frame victory by Dave Dudley who
beat the in-form Eddie Whitehead by 49 points to 27.
As a consequence of their defeat Bayley D slip to fourth
spot with Bayley B moving up one place to third despite losing
out by the odd frame to Wellington Billiard Hall F.
Things looked good early on though for the Bayley when young
Danny Oliver claimed the opening frame with a 5134 success
against Steve Weatherall.
But Pete Smith and Richard Tranter turned the tide with
wins over Kelvin McLeod and Alan Wheatley in the next two
frames - and although Chris Haycox levelled the match at
two frames all with victory over Chris Fletcher, it was the
visitors who had the last laugh when Chris Bates held his
nerve to take the deciding frame on the black against Dickie
Beddall.
Anstice B find themselves in fifth place in the table after
a resounding 4-1 win over Newport British Legion B secured
their seventh win of the campaign.
Danny Weaver’s 67-28 defeat of John Yapp was cancelled
out by Keith Gardner’s close 59-46 win over John Darrock
as the first two frames were shared.
However the Madeley side then took control with Mick Cahill
knocking in a 24 break on the way to defeating Alan Munn
62-22 and George Hammond rattling in a superb run of 47 – the
highest in the division so far – to take the next frame
from Alan Davies.
And with Stew Wimbush taking the last frame too the Anstice
were able to celebrate a fine 4-1 win to keep them on the
periphery of the promotion race with 33 points from 13 games.
Minnesota Fats C have exactly the same points total following
their 3-2 win away at Hadley A.
Toby Welsh and Tom Firmstone made the early running with
wins over Dave Barnett Junior and Shane Dicken Senior before
the home side hit back through Stuart Dicken’s 46-36
defeat of Bob Lane.
A narrow 39-28 win for Dave Barnett Senior over Dave Welsh
ensured there would be a nail-biting climax as Neil Robinson
took on Rich Goldie – and it was Neil who kept his
cool to triumph 67-25 as Minnesota took the match by three
frames to two.
Wellington Billiard Hall B came from behind to win their
tie with Shifnal D by the same score after Terry Askew had
given the visitors the lead with a fine win over Dan Francis.
Sanjay Chauhan doubled Shifnal’s lead with another
good win – this time against Gaz Hughes before the
Billiard Hall hit back by taking all three remaining frames.
First Kev Whitehead got the better of Ivor Peplow before
Allan Francis squared the match with a 55-30 success over
veteran Arthur Aston.
The comeback was then made complete when Iain Atkinson defeated
Barrie Easthope in the decider to secure the match for the
Billiard Hall by three frames to two.
DIVISION 1
The top two places in Division 1 seem destined for Anstice
A and Maddocks A respectively as between them they dropped
only one frame in last week’s fixtures.
Matt Davies’ black ball win over Noel Stones was the
only point dropped by leaders Anstice A as the reigning champions
defeated Shifnal E by four frames to one.
Ian Duffy opened the scoring with breaks of 34 and 36 against
Rob Edmunds and Neil Price made it 2-0 with a 55-26 success
over Chris Petford as the Madeley side set about protecting
their lead over Maddocks A at the top of the table.
Keith Price added another point with a close 63-50 win over
Dave Peplow before Shifnal claimed the fourth frame through
Matt Davies.
However Nick Oakley’s 58-26 defeat of Arron Sparkes
sees Anstice A’s lead at the top now a massive six
points ahead of Maddocks A who took all five points from
their home game with fancied Minnesota Fats A.
Ian Eldridge wasted no time getting into the swing of things
with breaks of 39 and 30 securing the first frame against
Jon Wright.
Ian Skelton and Darren Wincott got the better of Jamie Morris
and Steve Collins respectively before Individual Champion
Phil Davies made it four in a row, defeating Keith Blackham
65-34.
Leigh France’s 61-26 final frame win over Paul Devey
completed a resounding win for Maddocks who now lead third
placed Coddon A by nine points.
The Donnington side look destined to once again miss out
on the silverware, having finished in third spot last term.
Their 3-2 win over Little Dawley A means they have a lot
of catching up to do if they are to overhaul Maddocks A in
the race for runners-up spot although they did have Paul
Harper in fine form for them last week.
The former West Midland’s Individual Champion rattled
in a run of 44 on the way to taking the first frame from
Richie Heighway and things continued to look good for the
home side when Zenon Lembicz defeated Jesse Lowe and Adrian
Smith took the third frame for them - clearing from green
to black against Lee Elcock after obtaining the one snooker
he required on the colours.
However Little Dawley are determined to hold onto their
first division status and battled back bravely to take the
final two frames.
Ade Henry responded superbly as some fine snooker against
Coddon captain Dave Lloyd saved the visitors at least a point
and indeed it was by just a single point that they managed
to pull back another frame.
Darren Pountney came from 28 points down on the green to
eventually take the frame on the black for a 57-56 win against
Ian Ferriday to move Little Dawley a point closer to first
division survival.
Wellington Billiard Hall A were also on the comeback trail
as they turned a two frame deficit against Shifnal B into
a 3-2 win.
The Shifnal side used to play from the Billiard Hall so
some friendly rivalry ensued as John Powell took the opening
frame for Shifnal with a 29 break.
A Ali followed with a run of 24 to make it 2-0 against John
Rawlins but any thoughts the bottom of the table side had
of recording their fourth win of the season were soon dispelled
as Graham Darrall began the fightback with a 20 break against
M Shadab.
Alan Turner’s 64-27 win over Ray Evans squared things
up before Andy Kendrick won the decider with a 26 break against
competition secretary Nigel Stallard.
Bayley E also came out on top by the odd frame when they
entertained last season’s runners-up Broseley A in
what proved to be a closely fought contest.
Andy O’Brien gave the home side the lead with a 64-30
win over Carl Walker and the Bayley looked to be heading
for a two-frame lead when Steve Hoof produced a super display
to leave Richie Hulme requiring a snooker on the colours.
However, the former individual champion never gave up and
duly obtained the snooker he required before snatching victory
on the final black to level the frame scores at one frame
all.
Martin Watkins restored the home side’s lead with
a solid 63-24 win over John Shepherd before Ali Jones won
another close frame 54-48 against Mick Brezwyn to put the
Bayley 3-1 ahead.
However the visitors had the final say with Simon McLeod
making no mistake against John Squire to leave the final
score 3-2 to the Bayley.
Shifnal A went one better when they entertained Anstice
D and won all but one of the frames on offer.
Linsay Knox set the ball rolling with a 69-47 success against
Adam Moore . Angus Way was once again in target for Shifnal
with a 56 points to 20 win over Andy Elliott before Andy
Easthope continued in the same vane with a comfortable win
over Phil Reynolds.
John Fallows’ 62-24 win over John Jones made it 4-0
before Nigel Wallcroft saved the visitor’s blushes
with an excellent final frame victory over Roy Martin.
DIVISION 2
The top two teams in Division 2 both recorded 4-1 wins over
the teams currently occupying the bottom two places to leave
Dawley A just a point in front of Bayley A.
Sean Nolan’s 35 break secured the opening frame for
Dawley A as they entertained Anstice C. Chris Woods made
it 2-0 before Mark Jones weighed in with a 32 break to take
the third frame from Colin Smith.
Steve Camp’s fine win over Pete Nolan saved a point
for the Anstice but it was only a temporary respite as Rick
Bailey completed a good night’s work from Dawley by
taking the final frame with a 27 break against Dave Harper.
Steve Nicholls’s run of 24 gave Bayley A the lead
away to Wellington Billiard Hall C and further wins for Spencer
Rowley and Chris Morgan-Adams put the visitors into a commanding
3-0 lead.
Home captain Wayne Weeks pulled a frame back for the Billiard
Hall with a fine performance against Bob Mason only for Steve
Fletcher to take the last frame for the Bayley with a 64-26
win over Aaron O’Donnell.
As a result the Bayley find themselves in second place just
a point behind Dawley A and four points ahead of Coddon B
who came out on top by the odd frame at home to Maddocks
C.
Andy Jones led the way with a brilliant 67-30 success over
Graham Hoof and the home side doubled their lead when Simon
Yeats got the better of Colin Smith.
Nev Whitehead stemmed the tide with a 69-34 win over Mark
Wall only for Phil Szklarzewicz, playing in an unaccustomed
fourth spot, restored Coddon’s two-frame advantage
with a 74-30 triumph over Billy Rushton.
However Steve Downs was unable to give Coddon the finish
they were hoping for as he narrowly lost out to Joe Oliver
when the Maddocks player cut a thin re-spotted black along
the rail to leave the Donnington side settling for three
valuable points.
Maddocks B also fell to a 3-2 reverse as they entertained
Little Dawley G.
This match proved to be a seesaw battle with the visitors
taking the lead on no fewer than three occasions.
Darren Leneveu’s 63-43 win over Wally Harper was cancelled
out when Les Hicks got the better of Chris Leneveu.
Little Dawley went ahead again courtesy of Roy Vickery’s
78-35 win over Doug Morrey only for Nigel White to reply
for the home side with a 46-32 defeat of Roy Leneveu.
That left Graham Copson to take the decisive fifth frame
for Little Dawley with a good win over John Archer to inflict
only a fourth defeat of the season on the Maddocks side.
Little Dawley C were also celebrating a 3-2 win when they
came from behind to defeat Coddon C.
The Donnington side went ahead through the in-form, Don
Bayliss only for John Bowen to level for Little Dawley with
a fine win over John Whitehouse.
Sef Tusel restored Coddon’s lead with a 61-31 success
over Steve Farrington but wins for Rob Withington over Alan
Hedgecock and Colin Gittus who beat Fraser MacKinnon turned
the match Little Dawley’s way.
