Sadly there are only a few match cards to report on this
week and perhaps the pick of the bunch was Shifnal E's 4-1
victory over Bayley A in Division 2 of the Telford Snooker
League.
Having begun the day in fourth place Bayley A needed a good
performance if they were going to maintain any lingering hopes
they may have had of achieving promotion back to Division
1 at the first attempt - but it was the visitors who consolidated
their position in second spot with a resounding win
And their hero on the night was Chris Petford as he ended
home captain Steve Fletcher's unbeaten run by taking the fourth
frame on the brown to put Shifnal 3-1 ahead. And with Matthew
Davies rattling in a couple of twenty plus breaks on the way
to an 88-36 final frame win over Chris Morgan-Adams the visitors
kept close on the heals of leaders Bayley E.
Aaron Sparkes gave Shifnal the early lead with a comfortable
win over Arthur Burrows and although super sub Dennis Fletcher
came close for the home side in the next, he knew it wasn't
to be his night when he twice potted the brown and went in-off
giving Jeff Sparkes the opportunity to take the frame 84-48
for a 2-0 lead.
Bob Mason did manage to salvage a point for the Bayley as
he came from behind to pip Rob Wright on the black but the
visitors made certain of victory as Chris Petford produced
some fine snooker before sinking green to blue to leave Steve
Fletcher requiring two snookers on the pink.
Matthew Davies then wrapped up a fine win for Shifnal who
now look certain to join Balyey E as the two teams promoted
to Division one.
Division one leaders Anstice A took another step towards
lifting the coveted League title when they won four out of
the five frames on offer at home to Little Dawley A.
Ian Duffy was in devastating form against Ade Henry to give
them the lead. Shaun Harris made in 2-0 with a solid display
against Jesse Lowe before Richy Heighway took Neil Price to
the black only to see Neil clear the last 2 colours to make
it 3-0.
Darren Pountney maintained his own good season by salvaging
a point for the visitors by defeating Keith Price only for
Noel Stones to complete the 4-1 win by defeating Colin Gittus
For the second week running Minnesota Fats A came up with
a 3-2 win, this time against visitors Shifnal F.
Steve Collins put the Minnes ahead by beating Chris Painter
- both players took some excellent pots but it was Steve who
came out tops 71-34.
Shifnal then equalized through Wally Harper when a 30 break
gave him a 34 advantage on the colours but his opponent Jon
Wright fought back to achieve his snookers but then fizzled
out and went down 67-32.
Kev West then restored the lead by beating Spencer Rowley
84-31 before Island skipper Nev Whitehead squared matters
with his 56-16 win over Steve Osborne.
Paul Devy then secured the third point by pipping Dave Peplow
on the pink for a 48-32 scoreline.
In the third division former pace setters Bayley F are continuing
to stutter towards Division 3 silverware and this week made
only a satisfactory recovery from their previous two consecutive
4-1 defeats, when they took 3 points from their visit to Bayley
C.
With title chasers Maddocks B taking all 5 points from their
match with Bayley B, the league newcomers and long time leaders
will now have a fight on their hand as they strive for promotion
to the second division.
And things started well for the F team, as they took the
opening two frames courtesy of young Tom Maxfield picking
up his 10th win of the season against Mike Healey, and Chris
Shaw returning to winning ways against Chris Haycox.
Paul Maxfield was unable to secure the third frame for the
visitors, as he went down to Craig Whitehead, but he left
the coast clear for Eddie Whitehead to notch the promotion
hopefuls twelfth league win with the aide of a 31 break against
Mark Taras.
Jim Lewis, who along with team mate Craig Whitehead must
be rueing not being available for some matches early in the
campaign given their high standings in the averages, then
took on Andy Summers for that vital fifth point. It was the
C teams Mr Consistency who came through to put a dent into
the newcomers title aspirations, and continue the C teams
promising rise from lower reaches of the table.
