Coddon A, having narrowly missed out on runners-up spot in
the first division, ended their Telford Snooker League season
on a high note when they beat second division champions Bayley
E in the final of the team knockout at Shifnal War Memorial
Club last week.
The Bayley had high hopes of adding the cup to the second
division trophy as they started the match with a handicap
of 100 points but eventually lost a close match on the colours
as Coddon took all five frames.
Donnington captain Dave Lloyd led the way by defeating Andy
O'Brien by 40 points and the deficit was reduced still further
after Lee Szklarzewicz won a tight second frame against Steve
Hoof by some 30 points.
Ali Jones responded for the Bayley by opening up the next
with a 22 break only for Ian Ferriday to battle his way back
to take the frame on the colours before a scrappy fourth frame
saw Darren Weston just edge out Martin Watkins by 4 points
to leave Bayley's John Squire with a seven point advantage
going into the last.
And although John kept former County Champion Zenon Lembicz
at bay up till the colours the Donnington man seized his chance
on the yellow to clear the colours up to the pink to secure
the trophy for Coddon.
It was "hats off" to Little Dawley A (pictured)
as well when they beat another Bayley side, Bayley A, in the
final of the Consolation Cup.
Rick Cousins battled back to deny a determined Bob Mason
in a closely fought opening frame. The Little Dawley captain's
61-41 win wiped out the Bayley's 20 point start and the Wellington
side then fell behind as Ade Henry hit a rich vein of form,
knocking in three twenty plus breaks on the way to defeating
Arthur Burrows.
Steve Fletcher's 90-50 defeat of Richie Heighway proved to
be the Bayley's only success on the night as Darren Pountney
took the next against Steve Nicholls to leave veteran Jesse
Lowe with a 79 point lead going into the last.
That was always going to be too much for Chris Morgan-Adams
to retrieve and Jesse duly secured a well-deserved win for
Little Dawley by claiming the final frame 66-40 to put his
team's name on the trophy.
