Maddocks A's Phil Davis is the new Telford Snooker League
Individual Champion.
In the final at the Sir John Bayley Club he defeated Wellington
Billiard Hall's Steve Minshall by four frames to one to lift
the Chris Ward Trophy for the first time.
Phil took the opening frame on the green and followed up
with a break of 45 to take the second 77-31.
Steve replied by taking the third 60-23 with a 23 break but
his opponent opened up a two frame gap once again when he
sunk the final red to leave Steve requiring snookers in the
next.
The fifth frame couldn't have been closer as Phil looked
have done enough when he cleared the colours up to the pink
to go 13 points up but Steve potted the last two colours to
tie the frame at 54 points all and send the game to a re-spotted
black.
Both players then missed chances to sink the black but it
was Phil who eventually clinched the title with a trademark
long pot into the corner pocket to lift the coveted trophy.
Phil was also in action in the Oakengates Carpets doubles
final when he partnered his Maddocks team-mate Leigh France
against the favourites for the title Ian Duffy and Matthew
Davies.
The first frame proved to be a close tussle with Ian and
Matt just sneaking home on the pink. Matt, a former English
Amateur Champion, soon got into his stride though and he clinched
the next frame with a 50 break and he made certain of the
third frame too with a brilliant run of 82.
Referee Mike Healey did an excellent job officiating in his
first final and he didn't have to wait long for the conclusion
of the match as Ian and Matt made sure of the title by claiming
the fourth frame too to complete a 4-0 victory.
